The purpose of the present work was to investigate the effect doping with lanthanum aluminate on the phase assemblage and thermal behavior of zirconia ceramics for biomedical applications. Four compositions were prepared by a surface modification route of either conventional tetragonal zirconia (3Y-TZP) or high translucency cubic-based zirconia (5Y-PSZ) to reach a nominal composition of either 0.5 wt. % (3Y-0.5LAO and 5Y-0.5LAO) or 5 wt. % of lanthanum monoaluminate (3Y-5LAO and 5Y-5LAO). Undoped powders were used as controls. DTA and XRD analyses revealed that lanthanum dizirconate crystallized in the 934°C-936°C range, while lanthanum aluminate crystallized in the 1,056°C-1,063°C range in both types of zirconias doped at the 5% level. No second phase was found in compositions doped at the 0.5% level. check details The a lattice parameter and the amount of the cubic phase increased in both 3Y-5LAO and 5Y-5LAO. The microstructure of the compositions doped with 5% LAO was characterized by well distributed LAO twinned crystals and sparse needle-shaped lanthanum hexaaluminate crystals. A bimodal grain size distribution was observed in 5Y-doped compositions. This was attributed to abnormal grain growth of the cubic phase, and in line with aluminum segregation at grain boundaries and the presence of second-phase LAO crystals.Intracellular accumulating of the hyperphosphorylated tau plays a pivotal role in neurodegeneration of Alzheimer disease (AD), but the mechanisms underlying the gradually aggravated tau hyperphosphorylation remain elusive. Here, we show that increasing intracellular tau could upregulate mRNA and protein levels of TRPC1 (transient receptor potential channel 1) with an activated store-operated calcium entry (SOCE), an increased intraneuronal steady-state [Ca2+ ]i , an enhanced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, an imbalanced protein kinases and phosphatase, and an aggravated tauopathy. Furthermore, overexpressing TRPC1 induced ER stress, kinases-phosphatase imbalance, tau hyperphosphorylation and cognitive deficits in cultured neurons and mice, while pharmacological inhibiting or knockout TRPC1 attenuated the hTau-induced deregulations in SOCE, ER homeostasis, kinases-phosphatase balance, and tau phosphorylation level with improved synaptic and cognitive functions. Finally, an increased CCAAT-enhancer-binding protein (C/EBPβ) activity was observed in hTau-overexpressing cells and the hippocampus of the AD patients, while downregulating C/EBPβ by siRNA abolished the hTau-induced TRPC1 upregulation. These data reveal that increasing intracellular tau can upregulate C/EBPβ-TRPC1-SOCE signaling and thus disrupt phosphorylating system, which together aggravates tau pathologies leading to a chronic neurodegeneration.
Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are direct reports from patients about the status of their health condition without amendment or interpretation by others. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are the tools used to measure PROs; they are usually validated questionnaires patients complete by self-assessing their health status. Whilst the benefits of using PROs and PROMs to guide real-time patient care are well established, they have not been adopted by many oncology institutions worldwide. This literature review aimed to examine the barriers associated with using PROs and PROMs in routine oncology care.
A literature search was conducted across EMBASE, Medline and CINAHL databases. Studies detailing barriers to routine PRO use for real-time patient care were included; those focusing on PRO collection in the research setting were excluded.
Of 1165 records captured, 14 studies informed this review. At the patient level, patient time, incapacity and difficulty using electronic devices to complete PROMs were prominent barriers. At the health professional level, major barriers included health professionals' lack of time and knowledge to meaningfully interpret and integrate PRO data into their clinical practice and the inability for PRO data to be acted upon. Prominent barriers at the service level included difficulties integrating PROs and PROMs into clinical workflows and inadequate information technology (IT) infrastructures for easy PRO collection.
This review has outlined potential barriers to routine PRO use in the oncology setting. Such barriers should be considered when implementing PROs into routine clinical practice.

2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIMBOA), the main benzoxazinoid found in corn, elicits variable larval responses from different pest moths. For the widespread and highly polyphagous Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera Noctuidae), the fall-armyworm (FAW), DIMBOA acts as a feeding stimulant and improves larval growth at low concentrations. The FAW present two host plant-related strains, corn and rice strains, related to host preference on corn and other Graminae or rice. Based on both host preference and strain divergence of the FAW on corn, a cereal containing DIMBOA, and rice, lacking this compound, we question if corn and rice strains larvae respond equally toward DIMBOA. We evaluated differential expression in the transcriptome of both midgut and fat body larval tissues of the two strains reared on either DIMBOA-enriched artificial diet or control diet and inferred Bayesian networks.
We found differences in performance between corn and rice strain larvae reared on DIMBOA, as well as several differentially regulated contigs annotated as esterases, peptidases, transferases and reductases, all of them known for being related to responses of lepidopterans and other insects to DIMBOA. We also found a UDP-glucuronosyltransferase very similar to others found in many lepidopterans occupying a central hub within a transferase Bayesian network, suggesting that it is essential to an effective response to DIMBOA in FAW.
Our results suggest that there is an intrinsic cost for FAW rice strain larvae to metabolize corn-originated hydroxamic acids, which could have resulted in the partial host-associated genetic isolation found at FAW field populations.
