Residual tetracycline (TC) in animal food caused by abuse of antibiotics leads to many chronic diseases in the human body. The development of a simple and on-site visualization method for TC detection is need of the hour. Herein, a fluorescent europium-based metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) sensor for visual and rapid detection of TC was developed. Eu-MOF displays a red emission being excited at 260 nm. Upon exposure to TC, significant fluorescence quenching was observed due to the inner filter effect and photoinduced electron transfer. Moreover, the developed sensor was applied for the detection of TC in milk and beef samples with recoveries of 96.1% to 106.3%, respectively. More importantly, a portable test strip based on Eu-MOF was manufactured. It is a highly selective and sensitive portable device for TC detection. The results can be distinguished immediately by naked eyes, making it become an excellent choice to detect TC in real-time application.Based on the successful synthesis of mercaptomethamidophos as a substrate, a novel nanogold/mercaptomethamidophos multi-residue electrochemical biosensor was designed and fabricated by combining nanoscale effect, strong Au-S bonds as well as interaction between acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and mercaptomethamidophos, which can simultaneously detect 11 kinds of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) and total amount of OPPs using indirect competitive method. Electrochemical behavior of the modified electrode was characterized by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The AChE concentration and incubation time were optimized at 37.4 °C to achieve the best detection effect. This biosensor exhibits excellent electrochemical properties with a wider linear range of 0.1 ~ 1500 ng·mL-1, lower detection limit of 0.019 ~ 0.077 ng·mL-1, better stability and repeatability, which realizes the rapid detection of total amount of OPPs, and can simultaneously detect a large class of OPPs rather than one kind of OPP. Two OPPs (trichlorfon, dichlorvos) were detected in actual samples of apple and cabbage and achieved satisfactory test results.Determining the animal source in meat and meat products is crucial to prevent meat adulteration and fraud. Conventional methods require considerable operator skills, expensive instruments and are unable to provide fast mobile on-site detection systems to detect contamination of meat products. We developed a visual method based on recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) and a lateral flow dipstick (LFD) to identify beef (Bos taurus), sheep (Ovis aries), pork (Sus scrofa), duck (Anas platyrhynchos) and chicken (Gallus gallus). Natural Product Library cell assay The reaction was completed within 20 min. The results were determined by the naked eye. The detection limits of the RPA-LFD assays for duck, beef, sheep, chicken and pork were 101/µL, 102/µL, 102/µL, 101/µL and 101/µL, respectively. Furthermore, the RPA-LFD assays could differentiate species in boiled, microwaved, pressure-cooked or fried samples. These RPA-LFD assays represent a rapid, mobile detection system for determining meat product contamination.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Wales and the UK has highlighted significant and historic inequalities in health between social groups. To better understand the composition of these inequalities and inform planning after the pandemic, we undertook a decomposition of life expectancy inequalities between the most and least deprived quintiles for men and women by age and cause of death and explored trends between 2002 and 2018.

Statistical decomposition of life expectancy inequalities by age and cause of death using routine population mortality datasets.

We used routine statistics from the Office for National Statistics for the period 2002-2018 on population and deaths in Wales stratified by age, gender, Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) 2019 quintile and cause of death, categorised by International Classification of Disease, version 10, code into 15 categories of public health relevance. We aggregated data to 3-year rolling figures to account for low numbers of events in some groups annually. Next, we eutions for women from respiratory disease, cancers, dementia and drug- and alcohol-related conditions appeared to be increasing, while among men, there were rising contributions from respiratory, digestive and circulatory disease.

Life expectancy inequalities in Wales remain wide and have been increasing, particularly among women, with indications of worsening trends since 2010 following the introduction of fiscal austerity. As agencies recover from the pandemic, these findings should be considered alongside any resumption of services in Wales or future health and public policy.

The concept of this remediation technology is that activated carbon and bioamendments are injected into aquifer systems to enhance biodegradation. While the scientific basis of the technology is established, there is a need for methods to characterise and quantify the biodegradation at field scale. In this study, an integrated approach was applied to assess in situ biodegradation after the establishment of a cross sectional treatment zone in a TCE plume. The amendments were liquid activated carbon, hydrogen release donors and a Dehalococcoides containing culture. The integrated approach included spatial and temporal evaluations on flow and transport, redox conditions, contaminant concentrations, biomarker abundance and compound-specific stable isotopes. This is the first study applying isotopic and microbial techniques to assess field scale biodegradation enhanced by liquid a, non-stationary system. Furthermore, the investigations revealed prospects for future research, which should focus on monitoring contaminant fate and microbial distribution on the sediment and the activated carbon.
