Six patients (75%) were recovered and 2 (25%) died. Median length of stay in ICU and hospital were 27.5 days and 47.5 days, respectively. ConclusionThe promising outcomes of our cases suggested that ECMO support for rescue ventilation may be considered when symptoms deteriorated in adenovirus pneumonia patients, and may improve outcome. However, sequelae of adenovirus pneumonia and ECMO-related complications should also be taken into account. This review focuses on evaluation of stridor and possible endoscopic predictors of progression to LS and, once post-intubation acute lesions are established, therapeutic choices to manage this disorder in avoidance of tracheostomy. Tracheostomy, due to its inherent increased morbidity, mortality and influence on social stigma, should be viewed only as a last resort. In this article, available conservative and alternative therapies for ongoing LS are thoroughly reviewed. Methods A systematic review concerning randomized clinical trials and prospective studies on treatment modalities for LS was performed. A search strategy was developed for MEDLINE comprising terms related to disease, intervention and population. Title and abstract from captured references were peer-reviewed for eligibility. Selected studies full-texts were peer-reviewed and the results were compiled in a structured and narrative review. Stridor evaluation and post-extubation acute lesion classification were studied. Treatments such as balloon dilation, rigid dilation, corticosteroid-coated small tube intubation, and corticosteroid nebulization were described and evidence supporting their usage was discussed. In this study, we investigated the prevalence and spectrum features of thalassemia in Yunnan Province, the southwestern area of China. During 2014-2018, a total of 3,539 suspected thalassemia children were detected with α- and β-thalassemia mutations by gap-Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and reverse dot blot (RDB) analysis in Kunming Children's Hospital. Results Of these patients, 1,130 were diagnosed thalassemia gene carriers with a carrying rate of 31.92%. Among them, α-thalassemia was 43.63%, β-thalassemia was 53.98%, cases with both α- and β- thalassemia was 2.39%. selleck compound In α-thalassemia patients, the most common mutations was -SEA/αα (52.13%), followed by -α3.7/αα (27.79%), hemoglobin H disease (18.46%), and -α4.2/αα (1.62%). Fifteen gene mutations and 30 genotypes were identified in β-thalassemia patients, with the five most common mutations CD17 (A>T) (29.51%), CD41-42 (-TTCT) (27.87%), IVS-II-654 (C>T) (14.92%), CD26 (G>A) (6.89%), and CD26/CD27 (2.62%) accounting for 81.81% of the β-globin gene mutations. Furthermore, we founded two rare mutations CD34 (TGG → TAG) and Int in Chinese populations. Conclusions Our results suggested that the prevalence and gene mutation spectrum of thalassemia display obviously heterogeneity among children in Yunnan Province. The findings provide the valuable information for premarital and pre-pregnancy screening, prenatal diagnostic services, and designing appropriate prevention programs to control thalassemia for future in this area. Nonetheless, whether this relationship would be found outside these populations it is still unknown. Hence, we evaluated the relationship between NAFLD and skeletal muscle mass in children and adolescents with overweight/obesity. Methods Two-hundred and thirty-four overweight/obese youths were enrolled. NAFLD was diagnosed by ultrasononography, after exclusion of infectious and metabolic disorders. Forty of the patients with NAFLD had also liver biopsy. Total and regional lean body mass and total fat mass measurements were obtained by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The relative muscle mass (RMM) was defined as the percent of muscle mass (kg) relative to the sum of muscle and fat (kg) mass. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) was calculated by the sum of muscle masses of the four limbs (kg), and expressed as percent of body weight. Results Subjects those at high metabolic risk who may need intensive lifestyle interventions to prevent NAFLD and its progression. In developed countries, pediatric outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (P-OPAT) is well-established and proven to be safe and effective at reducing the length of hospital stay; however, data on low- and middle-income countries such as Indonesia remain limited. This P-OPAT service is new and the first service in Indonesia. Methods The medical records of patients attending Indonesia's first P-OPAT clinic between April 2015 and March 2017 were retrospectively investigated. Results During the 24-month period, 32 patients received treatment at the P-OPAT clinic, saving a total of 258 bed days. The majority of patients (n = 16; 50%) were diagnosed with urinary tract infection, followed by cellulitis (n = 4; 12.5%) and osteomyelitis (n = 4; 12.5%). Ceftriaxone was the most commonly used antibiotic (n = 16; 50%). All patients used a peripheral intravenous catheter and were sent home with this device. Twelve patients (37.5%) needed to change IV access more than once. None of the patients used elastomeric infusor device. The median duration of OPAT was 5 days (range 1-27 days). All patients were successfully treated with no recurrence after 30 days. One patient (3.1%) experienced drug-related complication and another one (3.1%) was readmitted due to an underlying medical condition. All the patients complied with P-OPAT schedules. Conclusions P-OPAT service offers a safe and effective option for the delivery of outpatient intravenous antibiotics in selected patients even in resource-poor settings.
