Legislators of Sao Tome and Principe, concerned about this harm and the high prevalence of alcohol use disorders, designed a comprehensive alcohol control bill to tackle this situation. Input into the design of the bill was obtained through interviews involving many stakeholders. The process had five phases (i) scoping the problem to understand the social burden of the harm caused by alcohol consumption; (ii) updating the evidence on alcohol policies and identifying areas for legislative interventions; (iii) drafting the bill; (iv) aligning the legislative framework of the bill; and (v) initiating the parliamentary procedure. The new bill scored 92/100 using a standardized alcohol control policy scale. The bill covers all domains of WHO's 2010 global strategy to reduce the harmful use of alcohol, and includes the three most cost-effective interventions for reducing alcohol consumption increased excise taxes on alcohol; bans or comprehensive restrictions on exposure to alcohol advertising; and restrictions on the availability of retailed alcohol through reduced hours of sale. The National Assembly plenary session upheld the bill, which is now under evaluation of the specialized First Commission on Political, Legal, Constitutional and Ethical Affairs. Approval of the bill requires the final voting once it is back with the National Assembly and its promulgation by the President. There is currently no national strategy or standardized approach to diabetic retinopathy screening in the Brazilian public health system, and multiple socioeconomic barriers prevent access to eye examination in Brazil's poorest regions.

From September 2021 to March 2022 we carried out a pilot project with an artificial intelligence system for diabetic retinopathy screening, embedded in a portable retinal camera. Patients with a diagnosis of diabetes according to the municipality registry were invited to attend nearby clinics for screening on designated days. Trained health-care technicians acquired images which were automatically evaluated by the system, with instant remote evaluation by retinal specialists in selected cases.

Our study was based in Sergipe State, located at a region with high illiteracy rates and no local availability of specialized retina care. The average number of laser treatments performed annually in the last 5years is 126, for a total State population of 2.3 million.

We first present general estimates for six representative countries and then identify data gaps that need to be addressed to develop global estimates. Interventions against tobacco product waste may be new channels to regulate tobacco products across sectors - for example, health, environment and finance - and consequently reduce overall tobacco use.

To determine the proportion of adults with hypertension who reported (i)having been previously diagnosed with hypertension; (ii)taking blood pressure-lowering medication; and (iii) having achieved hypertension control, in five health and demographic surveillance system sites across five countries in Asia.

Data were collected during household surveys conducted between 2016 and 2020 in the five surveillance sites in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Viet Nam. We defined hypertension as systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mmHg, diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg or taking blood pressure-lowering medication. We defined hypertension control as systolic blood pressure < 140 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure < 90 mmHg. We disaggregated hypertension awareness, treatment and control by surveillance site, and within each site by sex, age group, education, body mass index and smoking status.

Of 22 142 participants, 11 137 had hypertension (Bangladesh 211; India 487; Indonesia 1641; Malaysia 8164; and Viet Nam 634). The mean age of participants with hypertension was 60 years (range 19-101 years). Only in the Malaysian site were more than half of individuals with hypertension aware of their condition. Hypertension treatment ranged from 20.8% (341/1641; 95% CI 18.8-22.8%) in the Indonesian site to 44.7% (3649/8164; 95% CI 43.6-45.8%) in the Malaysian site. Less than one in four participants with hypertension had achieved hypertension control in any site. Hypertension awareness, treatment and control were generally higher among women and older adults.

However, extensive use has caused its residue and the metabolite 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) to seriously pollute the environments and agricultural products. In this study, a highly efficient cypermethrin-degrading bacterial consortium was acclimated from long-term pyrethroid-contaminated soil. Two strains, designated JQ-L and A-3, were screened from the consortium, and identified as Rhodococcus sp. and Comamonas sp., respectively. Strain JQ-L transformed 100 mg/L of cypermethrin to 3-PBA within 60 h of incubation; however, 3-PBA could not be further degraded by the strain. Strain A-3 utilized 3-PBA as sole carbon for growth, and completely degraded 100 mg/L of 3-PBA within 15 h of incubation. Co-culture of JQ-L and A-3 completely degraded 100 mg/L of cypermethrin within 24 h of incubation. Furthermore, a complete catabolic pathway of cypermethrin and the metabolite 3-PBA by the co-culture was proposed. This study provided a promising strategy for efficient elimination of cypermethrin residue-contaminated environments and agricultural products.The current economic and environmental context requests an accelerating development of sustainable alternatives for the production of various target compounds. Biological processes offer viable solutions and have gained renewed interest in the recent years. For example, photosynthetic chassis organisms are particularly promising for bioprocesses, as they do not require biomass-derived carbon sources and contribute to atmospheric CO2 fixation, therefore supporting climate change mitigation. Marine cyanobacteria are of particular interest for biotechnology applications, thanks to their rich diversity, their robustness to environmental changes, and their metabolic capabilities with potential for therapeutics and chemicals production without requiring freshwater. The additional cyanobacterial properties, such as efficient photosynthesis, are also highly beneficial for biotechnological processes. Due to their capabilities, research efforts have developed several genetic tools for direct metabolic engineering applications. While progress toward a robust genetic toolkit is continuously achieved, further work is still needed to routinely modify these species and unlock their full potential for industrial applications. In contrast to the understudied marine cyanobacteria, genetic engineering and synthetic biology in freshwater cyanobacteria are currently more advanced with a variety of tools already optimized. This mini-review will explore the opportunities provided by marine cyanobacteria for a greener future. A short discussion will cover the advances and challenges regarding genetic engineering and synthetic biology in marine cyanobacteria, followed by a parallel with freshwater cyanobacteria and their current genetic availability to guide the prospect for marine species.Gallium (Ga) is considered a high-tech Critical Metal, used in the manufacture of several microelectronic components containing either gallium arsenide (GaAs) or gallium nitride (GaN). The current high demand for this critical metal urges the development of effective recovery processes from secondary resources such as mine tailings or electronic recycling material. The importance of bioleaching as a biotechnological process to recover metals prompted this study, where an integrative approach combining experimental and genomic analysis was undertaken to identify potential mechanisms involved in bioleaching ability and strategies to cope with high metal(loid)s concentrations in five mine isolates. The Clusters of Orthologous Group (COG) annotation showed that the "amino acid transport and metabolism" [E] was the most predominant functional category in all genomes. In addition, the KEEG pathways analysis also showed predicted genes for the biosynthetic pathways of most amino acids, indicating that amino acids could have an important role in the Ga leaching mechanism. The presence of effective resistance mechanisms to Ga and arsenic (As) was particularly important in GaAs bioleaching batch assays, and might explain the divergence in bioleaching efficiency among the bacterial strains. Rhodanobacter sp. B2A1Ga4 and Sphingomonas sp. A2-49 with higher resistance, mainly to As, were the most efficient bioleaching strains under these conditions. In bioleaching assays using cell-free spent medium Arthrobacter silviterrae A2-55 with lower As resistance outperformed all the other stains. Overall, higher efficiency in Ga leaching was obtained in bioleaching assays using GaAs when compared to GaN.
