Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is an important treatment option in patients with coronary artery disease. Despite its beneficial effects, CABG surgery and its subsequent hospitalization may reduce physical functional capacity in patients, contributing to physical disability. Our objective was to assess the early disabling effects of CABG surgery and its subsequent hospitalization using direct measurements of physical function.
Patients (n = 44) were assessed pre-surgery and at hospital discharge for physical function using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and self-reported physical and mental health by questionnaire.
The total SPPB score (P < .001) and all of its components (P < .01-.001) decreased markedly following CABG surgery and hospitalization, with greater reductions in total SPPB score (P < .05) and gait speed (P < .01) in patients with higher body mass index. While CABG surgery and hospitalization reduced patient-reported physical function, changes in theseion. Although self-reported physical function also decreased, these changes largely did not correlate with direct measures of physical function.
The objective of this study was determine the prevalence of low health literacy (HL) and low reading ability among patients with chronic lung disease referred for pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) in the Netherlands and their loved ones; and to understand whether low HL or low reading ability influence PR outcomes.
Health literacy was measured using the Health Literacy Survey-Europe Q16 (HLS-EU-Q16). Reading ability and cognitive functioning were measured using the Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine-Dutch (REALM-D) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Exercise capacity, health status, and symptoms of anxiety and depression were assessed.
Patients (n = 120) entering PR and loved ones (n = 41) participated. Of all patients, 51% had low HL and 29% had low reading ability. Also, 39% of all loved ones had low HL. PR outcomes were comparable between patients with low or adequate HL. Patients with adequate reading ability showed greater improvement in symptoms of depression than patients with low reading ability (P = .047).
Low HL and low reading ability are common among patients entering PR and their loved ones. For patients with low or adequate HL, PR is an effective treatment. Whether considering low HL and low reading ability by offering tailored education during treatment could augment the benefits of PR warrants further study.

Inflammatory pathways are involved in the pathogenesis of pneumonia. Frequent sauna sessions may reduce the risk of respiratory tract infections including pneumonia independent of inflammation. We aimed to evaluate the independent and joint associations of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and frequency of sauna bathing (FSB) with risk of pneumonia in a prospective cohort study.
Serum hsCRP as an inflammatory marker was measured using an immunometric assay and FSB was assessed by self-reported sauna bathing habits at baseline in 2264 men aged 42-61 yr. Serum hsCRP was categorized as normal and high (≤3 and >3 mg/L, respectively) and FSB as low and high (defined as ≤1 and 2-7 sessions/wk, respectively). Multivariable-adjusted HRs (CIs) were calculated for incident pneumonia.
A total of 528 cases of pneumonia occurred during a median follow-up of 26.6 yr. Comparing high versus normal hsCRP, the multivariable-adjusted risk for pneumonia was HR = 1.30 (95% CI, 1.04-1.62). The corresponding risk was HR = 0.79 (95% CI, 0.66-0.95) comparing high versus low FSB. Compared with men with normal hsCRP and low FSB, high hsCRP and low FSB was associated with an increased risk of pneumonia in multivariable analysis (HR = 1.67 95% CI, 1.21-2.29), with no evidence of an association for high hsCRP and high FSB and pneumonia (HR = 0.94 95% CI, 0.69-1.29).
In a general middle-aged to older male Caucasian population, frequent sauna baths attenuated the increased risk of pneumonia due to inflammation.

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) improves psychological health and health-related quality of life (HR-QoL). Yet, available evidence suggests that their degree of improvements following CR may depend on patient sex and the mode of revascularization. selleck kinase inhibitor We examined the interplay between sex and mode of revascularization on the psychological health and HR-QoL of patients completing CR.
We analyzed the longitudinal records of patients who completed a 3-mo outpatient CR program following coronary revascularization. Levels of anxiety and depression were measured by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and HR-QoL was measured by the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 before and after CR. A two-by-two analysis of covariance (females vs males by coronary artery bypass graft surgery [CABG] vs percutaneous coronary intervention [PCI]) was used to examine the sex-by-revascularization procedure interaction effect on changes in psychological health and HR-QoL.
Of the 278 participants (age 65 ± 9 yr) included in the analysis, 191 (69%) underwent PCI and 55 (20%) were females.
