ion strategy.This study evaluated the effects of heat stress on the ex vivo inflammatory profile in untrained and trained men. Whole blood samples from untrained (UT) and trained (TR) individuals were incubated for 2 h at 37 °C or 40 °C. The whole blood of a subsample of the participants (n = 5 in both TR and UT groups) were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 10 ng/mL) concomitant to heat treatment (37 °C versus 40 °C). Flow cytometry was used to assess the intracellular NF-κB activation in CD4+ T cells and CD14+ monocytes, the expression of Toll-Like Receptor-4 (TLR-4), the frequencies of CD4+CD25-CD39+ and CD4+CD25+CD39+ T cells and monocyte subsets (CD14+CD16-; CD14+CD16+; CD14-CD16+), the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by lymphocytes and monocytes. The production of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) by LPS-stimulated whole blood were also evaluated. Heat treatment (40 °C) increased the proportions of CD14+CD16- and CD14+CD16+ monocytes and the lymphocyte MMP in the UT group. The frequencies of CD14-CD16+ monocytes and the activation of NF-κB in CD14+ monocytes decreased in UT and TR groups after heat treatment, while a reduction in CD4+CD25-CD39+ T-cells was observed only in the UT group. Higher TLR-4 and NF-κB activation were found in LPS-stimulated monocytes of UT men concomitant with higher TNF-α production and diminished IL-10 production after heat treatment. TR individuals presented lower NF- κB activation in LPS-stimulated monocytes after heat treatment. Our data suggest that the training status of individuals may impact on the anti-inflammatory response of heat treatment.
Previous studies showed that among the pediatric ESRD patients who receive a kidney donation from a parent, in most cases the mother is the one that agrees to donate her kidney to the sick child, whereas fathers are less willing to donate. The present study sought to explore decision making regarding which parent would donate a kidney to their child among Muslim Arab parents of pediatric ESRD patients.
The study design is a cross sectional qualitative study. We conducted semi-structured interviews with thirty-one parents twenty-five mothers and six fathers, who donated a kidney to their child.
Parents tended to refrain from donating a kidney to a sick daughter; mothers were more willing to donate than fathers. Our findings imply that culturally constructed notions of gender and motherhood are mobilized to the realm of health and illness, and mothers' body work is an influential factor in determining survival chances of pediatric ESRD patients and their quality of life.

The effect of SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and the influence of disease-modifying therapies (DMT) for MS on COVID-19 are unknown. To date, patients with MS have not been shown to present greater risk of COVID-19 or more severe progression of the disease.
We performed a descriptive study of patients with MS presenting SARS-CoV-2 infection diagnosed with PCR. We analysed demographic, clinical, laboratory, and treatment variables in our sample. Presence of antibodies against the virus was also determined.
Relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) was the most frequent form of MS in our sample. Prognosis was unfavourable in 10.2% of patients, and was associated with older age and higher scores on the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). Seroprevalence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 was 83.3% in our sample. Development of antibodies was not associated with DMT, lymphocytopaenia, or any of the other variables analysed.

DMT and lymphocytopaenia did not influence the clinical course of COVID-19. As miRNAs are present in the middle ear, we hypothesized their expression differs between allergic and non-allergic patients and reflects the difference in pathomechanism of effusion formation between these two groups.
This study aimed to establish the expression of 5 different miRNAs (miR-223-3p, miR-451a, miR-16-5p, miR-320e, miR-25-3p) in ear exudates in children diagnosed with OME. The allergy group consisted of 18 patients whereas the non-allergic group had 36 patients. MicroRNA was isolated from the middle ear fluid collected during myringotomy and transcribed into cDNA.
