We introduce a video-based system for concurrent activity recognition during teamwork in a clinical setting. During system development, we preserved patient and provider privacy by pre-computing spatio-temporal features. We extended the inflated 3D ConvNet (i3D) model for concurrent activity recognition. For the model training, we tuned the weights of the final stages of i3D using back-propagated loss from the fully-connected layer. We applied filtering on the model predictions to remove noisy predictions. We evaluated the system on five activities performed during trauma resuscitation, the initial management of injured patients in the emergency department. Our system achieved an average value of 74% average precision (AP) for these five activities and outperformed previous systems designed for the same domain. We visualized feature maps from the model, showing that the system learned to focus on regions relevant to performance of each activity.

To construct and publicly release a set of medical concept embeddings for codes following the ICD-10 coding standard which explicitly incorporate hierarchical information from medical codes into the embedding formulation.

We trained concept embeddings using several new extensions to the Word2Vec algorithm using a dataset of approximately 600,000 patients from a major integrated healthcare organization in the Mid-Atlantic US. Our concept embeddings included additional entities to account for the medical categories assigned to codes by the Clinical Classification Software Revised (CCSR) dataset. We compare these results to sets of publicly released pretrained embeddings and alternative training methodologies.

We found that Word2Vec models which included hierarchical data outperformed ordinary Word2Vec alternatives on tasks which compared naïve clusters to canonical ones provided by CCSR. Our Skip-Gram model with both codes and categories achieved 61.4% normalized mutual information with canonical labels iovement carries forward into classification tasks. As part of this publication, we have released several sets of pretrained medical concept embeddings using the ICD-10 standard which significantly outperform other well-known pretrained vectors on our tested outcomes. The use of alerts from the Bronx RHIO, a health information exchange (HIE) to identify James J. Peters VAMC patients diagnosed with COVID-19 in the community was described to facilitate COVID-19 VA primary care follow-up. COVID-19 hospitalization and testing alerts were delivered on a Bronx RHIO facility report. VA COVID-19 follow-up care by telephone and video was guided by local COVID-19 clinical pathways, electronic health record (EHR) templates, and tracking through a database. VA received 180 RHIO alerts for 111 unique patients, and 88 had positive non-VA testing from March to June 2020. 41% of the 88 had non-VA admissions and 23% died. 63% received VA primary care follow-up of COVID-19 symptoms documented by custom EHR templates. The HIE identified 11% of the facility COVID-19 patients. HIE alerts can be used to identify facility COVID-19 patients diagnosed in the community and facilitate follow-up by their VA primary care teams.A total of 300 pigs (DNA 400 × 200, Columbus, NE), initially 11.1 kg, were used in a study to evaluate the effects of increasing amounts of high-protein distillers dried grains (HP DDG) on growth performance and to estimate its energy value relative to corn. Pigs were weaned, placed in pens with five pigs each, and fed a common diet for 21 d after weaning. Then, pens were assigned to treatments in a randomized complete block design. There were 5 treatments with 12 replicates per treatment. Treatments consisted of 0, 10, 20, 30, or 40% HP DDG, formulated by changing only the amounts of corn and feed-grade amino acids. Pigs were weighed weekly for 21 d to evaluate average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and gain-to-feed ratio (GF). Caloric efficiency was obtained by multiplying ADFI by kcal of net energy (NE) per kg of diet and dividing by ADG. The NE values for corn and soybean meal were obtained from NRC (2012), and initial estimates for HP DDG NE were derived from the Noblet et al. (1994)udy was estimated to be 97.3% of the energy value of corn. Direct or indirect calorimetry is needed to confirm this value. The objective of this study was to compare the proximate, quality, and sensory attributes of Dorper sheep meat (Dorper), domestic commercial crossbred (DCC) and Australian commercial crossbred (ACC). A total of 60 untrimmed loins from the three sheep sources were purchased (20 sheep loins/source) and processed. read more The objective color, objective tenderness [Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF)], and proximate composition of the sheep meat were evaluated. A consumer panel and a trained sensory panel were also conducted to evaluate the sensory attributes. Dorper had greater (P = 0.04) carbohydrate content compared to DCC, but was not (P = 0.86) different from ACC. In addition, Dorper had the greatest WBSF value, followed by DCC, with ACC having the least WBSF out of the three (P less then 0.0001). For the consumer panel, Dorper was rated to be less tender than ACC (P = 0.01), but was not different from DCC (P = 0.76). Dorper was also rated with lower flavor acceptability compared to DCC (P = 0.02), but was not different from ACC (P = 0.86). In addition, Dorper had the lowest overall acceptance rating by the consumers (P = 0.01). Trained sensory panel results followed the same trend as the consumer panel results which rated Dorper to be less tender than ACC (P = 0.002), but was not different from DCC (P = 0.10). Dorper was also rated with greater off-flavor intensity compared to DCC (P = 0.009), but was not different from ACC (P = 0.53). Finally, no differences were found for all other attributes evaluated among the sheep sources. The results indicated that consumers did not prefer Dorper over ACC and DCC. However, additional research with a more controlled environment is needed to shed light on the true palatability traits of Dorper.Mass medication to manage population health can be achieved by providing therapeutics in the drinking water. Young nursery pigs are highly sensitive to the flavor and smell of water. Medications that reduce water palatability often lead to an interruption in water and feed intake. With the availability of several generic water-soluble antimicrobials for pigs, questions have arisen about their palatability compared with the original product. In this study, we compared the intake of water containing tiamulin hydrogen fumarate from two different manufacturers with the intake of unmedicated water. The hypothesis was that the intake of tiamulin-containing water would be similar to unmedicated water. Water intake was monitored upon entry into the nursery and just prior to leaving the nursery. Also, average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency (FE) were determined. A total of 300 pigs were individually weighed (4.2-10.9 kg; avg = 6.8 kg) for randomization to pen (n = 30 pens). The experiment had two time points 1) early nursery (periods 1-3) and 2) late nursery (period 4).
