Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) has been extensively investigated as a marker of adaptive emotional functioning in both children and adults, with studies linking RSA to temperamental dimensions such as positive affect and extraversion. However, few studies have examined the extent to which relations between RSA and temperament characteristics vary across ethnicity in childhood. We examined relations between respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and temperament dimensions (Activity Level, Task Orientation, and Affect-Extraversion) and the moderating role of ethnicity among preschoolers. Chinese- American (n = 28, Mage = 54.30 months) and European American (n = 32, Mage = 50.41 months) preschoolers were assessed for their temperament and RSA. Findings indicated higher levels of Affect-Extraversion among European American children. Ethnicity moderated the association between the baseline RSA and the Affect-Extraversion dimension of temperament, with a significant positive association found only for European American children. More research is needed to examine the effects of social-cultural experiences on the relation between children's affective regulation and autonomic functioning development.Chlorophyll (Chl) biosynthesis is one of the most important cellular processes essential for plant photosynthesis. Chl degradation pathway is also important catabolic process occurs during leaf senescence, fruit ripening and under biotic or abiotic stress conditions. Here we have systematically investigated the molecular evolution, gene structure, compositional analysis along with ENc plot, correspondence analysis and codon usage bias of the proteins and encoded genes involved in Chl metabolism from monocots and dicots. The gene and species specific phylogenetic trees using amino acid sequences showed clear clustering formation of the selected species based on monocots and dicots but not supported by 18S rRNA. Nucleotide composition of the encoding genes showed that average GC%, GC1%, GC2% and GC3% were higher in monocots. RSCU analysis depicts that genes from monocots for both pathways and genes for synthesis pathway from dicots only biased to G/C-ending synonymous codons but in degradation pathway most optimal codons (except UUG) in dicots biased to A/U-ending synonymous codons. We found strong evidence of episodic diversifying selection at several amino acid sites in all genes investigated. Conserved domain and gene structures were observed for the genes with varying lengths of introns and exons, involved in Chl metabolism along with some intronless genes within synthesis pathway. ENc and correspondence analyses suggested the mutational or selection constraint on the genes to shape the codon usage. These comprehensive studies may be helpful in further research in molecular phylogenetics and genomics and to better understand the evolutionary dynamics of Chl metabolic pathway.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.BACKGROUND Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) remains one of the most challenging malignancies to treat in the modern era. Most patients present with or develop recurrent/metastatic incurable disease with poor response rates to conventional chemotherapy, and life expectancy is short. Next generation sequencing (NGS) can be leveraged in ATC to identify oncogenic alterations that can be targeted with molecularly specific therapy, offering new, effective treatment options to a subset of patients. PATIENT FINDINGS A 73-year-old man presenting with locally advanced papillary thyroid carcinoma containing a minor component of ATC was treated with surgery and iodine-131. He developed biopsy-confirmed ATC distant metastases that progressed on cytotoxic chemotherapy. NGS revealed several alterations, including a gene fusions.Pre-school children find it difficult to correctly report if it is morning or afternoon. The present study tested whether children could learn a non-verbal Time-Place Learning (TPL) task that depended on time of day. Twenty-five 4-year-olds were repeatedly asked to find a toy in one of two boxes. Children in the Cued condition were told the toy was in one box in the morning and in another box in the afternoon. Children in the Not Cued condition were told the toy was sometimes in one box and sometimes in the other box. After 80 trials, children were asked if it was morning or afternoon. About 65% of the children learned the TPL task, and about three-quarters of the children verbally identified if it was morning or afternoon. However, the children who learned the TPL task were not necessarily the children who correctly answered whether it was morning or afternoon, and those in the Cued condition were no more likely to solve the task than those in the Not Cued condition. The implication is that children have a sense of time that can be used to solve spatio-temporal contingencies, but does not depend on the verbal understanding of time of day.Objectives To investigate the psychometric properties of the 10-item Social Engagement and Activities Questionnaire (SEAQ) to assess social-group, interpersonal interaction, and solitary activities among low-income, depressed homebound older adults (n = 269).Methods We used principal component analysis (PCA) to evaluate the underlying dimensions of the 10-item full SEAQ and a 6-item abbreviated item set. We assessed evidence of validity for the SEAQ by examining relationships between the SEAQ and older adults' clinical characteristics perceived social support, disability, and depressive symptoms.Results PCA results showed two components (1) a general social-group activities engagement component; and (2) a low level of socialization (i.e., strong negative coefficients on the recreational activities and self-enrichment/educational activities and a negative coefficient for interpersonal interaction activities). In addition to conventional metrics of quality of care, quality of life (QoL) assessment in thyroid cancer patients is imperative. Thyroid cancer survivors face unique impediments to health-related QoL (HRQoL), including thyroid-specific symptoms and exposure to disease-related stressors-including fear of recurrence and financial toxicity-over a prolonged survival period. Survey instruments currently used to assess HRQoL in TC survivors may be insufficient to accurately capture the burden of disease in this population. We aimed to identify the HRQoL instruments in the literature which have been applied in the thyroid cancer survivor population, and to present the psychometric properties of the scales and indexes that have been used. We hypothesize that few instruments have shown evidence of validity in this population. Summary - Of the 927 articles identified by search criteria, only 28 studies using 15 HRQoL instruments methyroid cancer-specific instruments will allow for better data gathering and understanding of the barriers to achieving high long-term HRQoL in thyroid cancer survivors throughout their long post-survival treatment course.Objective:Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the most serious public health problems in the world. Hydrogen (H2), a flammable, colorless, and odorless gas, has been observed to have preventive and therapeutic effects on brain trauma and other neurological disorders, but its exact mechanism has not been fully clarified.Methods To further study the mechanism underlying the role of hydrogen gas in alleviating BBB damage after TBI, we performed the scratch injury model on cultured brain microvascular endothelial cells (bEnd.3), which formed the microvascular endothelial barrier - an integral part of the highly specialized BBB.Results In the case of TBI, hydrogen was able to improve the decline of cell viability induced by TBI. More importantly, inhibition of PI3 K/Akt/GSK3β signal pathway or activation of autophagy reduced the protective effect of hydrogen on cell viability, indicating that such protective effect was regulated by PI3 K/Akt/GSK3β signal pathway and was related to the inhibition of autophagy.Conclusion So we concluded that hydrogen improved the cell viability in a microvascular endothelial cell model of TBI partly through inhibition of autophagy, and inhibitory effect of hydrogen on autophagy was exerted by activating PI3 K/Akt/GSK3β signal pathway. These findings enriched our knowledge about the mechanism of hydrogen therapy against TBI.Purpose To explore the life experiences of patients with type 1 diabetes transition from adolescence into adulthood in Taiwan.Methods Descriptive phenomenological design was used. Fourteen participants were individually interviewed using a semi-structured interview.Results The life experiences of patients with type 1 diabetes transition from adolescence into adulthood experience a metamorphosis from awareness of responsibility to figuring out a way to care for themselves. Six themes emerged (1) hibernation awareness of responsibility; (2) emergence attempts to take responsibility; (3) perseverance encountering difficulties; (4) anxiety multiple worries; (5) hesitation back-and-forth," and (6) exit finding a way out."Conclusions During the transition phase, the participants experienced the trials of various situations. Regardless of whether they are able to independently bear the responsibilities of self-management, they all hope to turn around the challenges of disease control and take ownership of their disease. Like a butterfly that emerges from a cocoon, they hoped to overcome the dangers of taking flight through trial and error and navigating the world. The results of this study can serve as a reference for clinical care and developing localized intervention strategies targeted to the transition period between adolescence and young adulthood.Benzophenone (BP) is an emerging contaminant that is widely distributed in soil, groundwater, sediment and surface water. In this study, the degradation kinetics, mechanisms, and influence of anions on thermally activated persulphate (TAP) oxidation of BP were systematically investigated. BP degradation was promoted by elevated temperature. The BP degradation data fitted well to the Arrhenius equation with calculated activation energy of 122.8 kJ/mol. BP degradation was also promoted by alkaline pH and high persulphate concentrations. Radical scavenging experiments suggested that both SO4•- and HO• were involved in BP oxidation. Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to Orbitrap mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Orbitrap-MS) identified six degradation intermediates. Based on these results, two possible reaction pathways were proposed. Water matrix anions had complex impacts on BP degradation by TAP. Cl- had dual effects on the reaction low concentration promoted it while high concentration inhibited it. Br- strongly suppressed the reaction.
