In vivo data underlined the presence of urolithins only after the prolonged treatment, confirming that the gut fermentation process requires at least 24 h to produce urolithins. Finally, an increase of Superoxide Dismutase-1 (SOD-1), which represents one of the fundamental endogenous antioxidant defenses, was determined in an EAE pretreated LNCap cell model system, confirming EAE antioxidant activity.Alveolar osteitis (AO) or dry socket after dental extractions is a common postoperative complication characterized by the presence of severe pain associated with an empty socket. Although some authors consider AO to be related to an alteration of the blood clot, the underlying etiology remains unclear, and recent reports suggest that bacteria might play an important role. A systematic review was made, compiling relevant references from PubMed, the Cochrane Library, Scopus and the Web of Science databases to determine which bacteria have been identified in AO sockets after dental extractions. Papers published between 1980-2019, identifying the bacteria present in AO sockets after tooth extractions, were included. Data were displayed in tables, and a descriptive analysis was carried out. After the screening process, four papers were analyzed, comprising a total of 138 samples from 138 patients with AO. The most commonly detected bacteria were Prevotella, Fusobacterium, Parvimonas and Peptostreptococcus. Two studies also showed the microbiota of patients that developed AO after dental extractions to be apparently different from that of patients without postoperative complications. These results indicate that bacteria may play an important role in the pathogenesis of AO, though further studies are needed to confirm these findings.Endothelial dysfunction leading to vascular permeability and plasma leakage are characteristic features of severe dengue and sepsis. However, the mechanisms underlying these immune-pathologies remain unclear. The risk of severe dengue and sepsis development depend on patient-related and pathogen-related factors. Additionally, comorbidities increase the risk of severe disease and their incidence hampers correct diagnosis and treatments. To date, there is no efficient therapy to combat severe dengue and sepsis. Here, we discuss the differences and similarities between the pathogenesis of severe dengue and that of bacterial sepsis. We identify gaps in knowledge that need to be better understood in order to move towards the rational development and/or usage of therapeutic strategies to ameliorate severe dengue disease. In this paper, we designed and prepared a novel metal organic framework (MOF)/holey graphene (HG) composites as electrode materials for electrochemistry and capacitive deionization (CDI). The MOF nanoparticles were attached to the surface of the HG sheets to form layered porous structure, which promoted the transport of ions and electrons in the electrode/electrolyte interfaces. Additionally, the synergistic effect of these composite electrodes, which combined pseudocapacitance performance of MOF and the high conductivity of graphene, contributed to enhancing the performance of electrochemistry and CDI. The MOF/HG-2 exhibited high capacitances of 526 F g-1 at current rates of 0.1 A g-1, low charge transfer resistance of 0.53 Ω, and excellent cycling stability (retention of about 90.3% after 5000 cycles at 2 A g-1). As electrode materials for CDI, the MOF/HG-2 displayed a remarkable electrosorption capacity of 39.6 mg g-1 with initial salt concentration of 800 mg L-1, and there was no obvious attenuation after 20 CDI regeneration cycles. These results confirmed that MOF/HG was a promising electrode material for the actual application of CDI.The diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) relies on the presence of amyloidosis and tauopathy, as reflected in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), independently from the clinical stage. Recently, CSF d-serine has been proposed as a possible new AD biomarker, reflecting dysfunctional activation of neuronal glutamatergic N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR). In this study, we measured blood serum and CSF concentration of two NMDAR modulators, such as d-serine and d-aspartate, in a cohort of drug-free subjects encompassing the whole AD clinical spectrum. In addition, we also analyzed d-serine levels in a cohort of post-mortem AD and control cortex samples. We reported unaltered serum and CSF concentrations of d-serine and d-aspartate in AD patients both during the AD progression and compared to non-demented controls. Lenalidomide purchase Accordingly, no correlation was detected between serum or CSF d-serine content and mini-mental state examination or Clinical Dementia Rating. Similarly, cortical d-serine levels were also unaltered in post-mortem samples of AD patients. Overall, our results failed to confirm previous findings indicating the CSF d-serine as a novel biomarker for AD.

Erosion development is of crucial significance as it impacts prognosis and therapy decisions in patients with inflammatory joint diseases. Our study aimed to determine the sensitivity of high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) to detect change of bone surface over time and to identify erosion development in early inflammatory arthritis (EIA) patients. Moreover, the contribution of prognostic factors on periarticular bone damage in the first year of diagnosis assessed by HR-pQCT was explored.

46 patients with arthritic symptoms for less than one year, and a clinical diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis were prospectively imaged at baseline and 12-months. HR-pQCT scans of the 2nd and 3rd MCP joints and CR of the hands and feet were performed. Joint space width (JSW), total bone mineral density (Tt.BMD), erosion presence and volume were assessed with HR-pQCT. Scan-rescan precision was assessed to define an individual-level least significant change (LSC) criterion. Regression analyses explored prognostic factors for bone damage progression.

We observed no significant group-level changes in JSW, Tt.BMD or erosion volume. 20% or fewer joints demonstrated individual-level changes greater than the LSC criterion for mean JSW, Tt.BMD and erosion volume. HR-pQCT detected more erosions than CR in the 2nd and 3rd MCP. Increased symptom duration at diagnosis was weakly associated (P<0.10) with lower JSW minimum and higher JSW standard deviation.

Gradual degradation of JSW, proportional to symptom duration, was detected by HR-pQCT. EIA patients need to be closely monitored for exacerbation of arthritis and progression of periarticular bone damage.
