This study centres on magainin-2 like bacteriocin with anticancer action, produced by Bacillus safensis strain SDG14 isolated from gut of marine fish Sardinella longiceps. The purified bacteriocin designated as BpSl14 was thermostable and pH tolerant. The molecular weight of BpS114 was estimated to be 6061.2 Da using MALDI-ToF MS. The partial primary sequence was elucidated by peptide mass fingerprinting using MALDI MS/MS. The tertiary structure of the partial sequence was similar to that of two magainin-2 α-helices joined together by extended indolicidin. The BpSl14 protein inhibited the cells of lung carcinoma, one of the deadliest cancers. Docking studies conducted with DR5 and TGF-β, two of the most prominent apoptotic receptors in adenocarcinoma, also proved the anti-apoptotic action of BpSl14.

Routine chemistry testing is typically performed using serum or plasma to assess a patient's clinical status. At our institution, serum is the specimen type used. To reduce processing times, evaluation of plasma-based and rapid serum gel separator tubes was performed.

We compared the results of routine chemistry analytes collected in serum gel separator tubes (SST), plasma gel separator tubes (PST), rapid serum gel separator tubes (RST), and plasma tubes without gel separators (DGT). Result concordance was assessed at baseline (immediate testing after processing) and up to one week of refrigerated storage. Other parameters assessed were the susceptibility to hemolysis and lipemia interference, and changes in results after re-centrifugation. Percent changes were compared against the SST and evaluated according to established bias thresholds.

Total protein and potassium results at baseline in plasma-based tubes had percent changes from the SST that exceeded acceptability thresholds. Stability was significantly shortened for glucose, potassium, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) when collected in the PST as compared to the SST. The RST was the least susceptible to hemolysis and lipemia interferents. Re-centrifugation affected the serum-based analysis of potassium.

Plasma may reduce processing time at the expense of shortened sample stability and may require specimen source-specific reference intervals for potassium and total protein. The RST provides an alternate option to reduce processing time, while maintaining storage stability.

About one in three patients with breast cancer present with lymph node (LN) metastasis and LN status is one of the most important prognostic predictors in patients with BC. In addition to their prognostic value, LNs initiate adaptive immunity against BC. Yet, BC cells often avoid immune-mediated destruction in LNs. This review provides an overview of the ways by which BC cells modulate LN stromal and hematopoietic cells to promote metastasis and immune evasion.

Hepatic steatosis is a common incidental finding on abdominal imaging that is not always reported or recognized as having clinical significance. Because of its association with liver disease, cirrhosis, and diabetes, the aim of this study was to bring attention to this finding and provide clinical guidance to referring clinicians by inserting standardized text into radiology reports of patients with incidentally detected hepatic steatosis.

Patients with incidentally discovered hepatic steatosis on abdominal ultrasound or CT had standard text inserted into the impression sections of their diagnostic imaging reports. A total of 1,256 patients whose reports were tagged between April 2016 and September 2017 were retrospectively identified and their electronic medical records reviewed to determine subsequent acknowledgment in the medical record or clinical action in response to the tagged report. Information regarding patient demographics, the type of provider who ordered the examination, and the acuity of the examination results was also recorded.

Acknowledgment and subsequent clinical action were more likely in patients whose examinations was ordered by primary care providers, whose examination results were not urgent, and who were in the ultrasound group. The overall diagnostic yield in patients who underwent clinical evaluation was nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in 70%, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in 6%, and alcoholic hepatitis in 17%.

Opportunistic screening for incidental hepatic steatosis on abdominal CT and ultrasound is feasible, with substantial yield for patients with clinically important entities including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

Gregarines have been the subject of particular interest due to their diversity, phylogenetically basal position, and more recently, their symbiotic relationships with their hosts. In the present study, four new species of marine eugregarines infecting ascidian hosts (Lankesteria kaiteriteriensis sp. nov., L. dolabra sp. nov., L. savignyii sp. nov., and L. pollywoga sp. nov.) were described using a combination of morphological and molecular data. Phylogenetic analysis using small subunit rDNA sequences suggested that gregarines that parasitize ascidians and polychaetes share a common origin as traditionally hypothesized by predecessors in the discipline. However, Lankesteria and Lecudina species did not form clades as expected, but were instead intermixed amongst each other and their respective type species in the phylogeny. These two major genera are therefore taxonomically problematic. We hypothesize that the continued addition of new species from polychaete and tunicate hosts as well as the construction of multigene phylogenies that include type-material will further dissolve the currently accepted distinction between Lankesteria and Lecudina. The species discovered and described in the current study add new phylogenetic and taxonomic data to the knowledge of marine gregarine parasitism in ascidian hosts.Disregarding protective measures when handling pesticides in agricultural production imposes increased health risks and health costs on farmers as well as degrades the natural ecosystem. In Pakistan, where agriculture is the prime occupation in rural communities, there is overwhelming evidence of indiscriminate use of hazardous pesticides by farmers without taking adequate precautions. Using cross-sectional data, we examined personal protection and health costs to vegetable growers due to pesticide exposure and determinants of farmers' pesticide handling practices. KT 474 cost The theory of averting behavior was used, and the possible factors affecting farmers' adoption of safety equipment and of disposal methods for pesticide containers were estimated using a logit model. Health effects (P less then 0.05) and farmers' protection and health costs (P less then 0.01) are found as important determinants of farmers' adoption of safety equipment and of disposal methods for pesticide containers. The mean protection and health cost of pesticide exposure per farmer per vegetable season in 2019 was US $3.60. Analytical outcomes indicate that safe and recommended pesticide handling practices are needed to be introduced through adequate integrated pest management (IPM) training programs and by improving farmers' formal education. Thus, creating awareness through IPM training programs among vegetable growers and enhancing formal education to encourage the adoption of precautionary measures and safe disposal methods for pesticide containers may reduce health risks and health costs. Findings imply that adoption of adequate pesticide handling practices would further help reduce occupational hazards and promote sustainable agriculture in Pakistan.Heavy metal ions in aqueous solutions are taken into account as one of the most harmful environmental issues that ominously affect human health. Pb(II) is a common pollutant among heavy metals found in industrial wastewater, and various methods were developed to remove the Pb(II). The adsorption method was more efficient, cheap, and eco-friendly to remove the Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. The removal efficiency depends on the process parameters (initial concentration, the adsorbent dosage of T-Fe3O4 nanocomposites, residence time, and adsorbent pH). The relationship between the process parameters and output is non-linear and complex. The purpose of the present study is to develop an artificial neural networks (ANN) model to estimate and analyze the relationship between Pb(II) removal and adsorption process parameters. The model was trained with the backpropagation algorithm. The model was validated with the unseen datasets. The correlation coefficient adj.R2 values for total datasets is 0.991. The relationship between the parameters and Pb(II) removal was analyzed by sensitivity analysis and creating a virtual adsorption process. The study determined that the ANN modeling was a reliable tool for predicting and optimizing adsorption process parameters for maximum lead removal from aqueous solutions. In Egypt, using agricultural drainage water is a serious challenge for fish farming, due to water scaristy. Metals could be a potential threat to the quality of the cultured fish. Thus, this study aimed to assess the content of the metals in the cultured fish, their effect on the fish tissues, and the possible human health risk upon their consumption. This accomplished firstly, by determining the levels of essential Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, beside the top three most toxic metals (Cr, Cd, and Pb) in the edible muscles and liver of 200 samples of Oreochromis niloticus cultured at three fish farms, using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The results showed the order of abundance Fe > Zn > Cu ≥ Cr > Mn > Pb > Cd. Levels of Fe, Zn, Mn, and Cu in the fish liver were higher than corresponding values of muscles by 3, 3, 5, 9 order of magnitude, respectively. The histopathological examination showed alternations in muscles and liver tissues of fish farms irrigated with drainage water. However, the risk assessment indicated the safe human consumption of cultured fish produced from these fish farms. In recent years, examining the determinants of health behaviors on a multi-country level remains limited. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the key factors that may enhance the adoption of health-protective behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic in Morocco and India. A theoretical framework derived from the health belief model (HBM) was used for this research. Data was collected from a sample of 444 adult individuals split across Morocco (n = 215) and India (n = 229). Data analysis was carried out using two-stage multiple-analytic techniques. First, structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to test the hypothesized relationships. Second, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was employed to rank the significant independent variables obtained from SEM analysis. The results of SEM showed that perceived benefit is the key predictor of the protective behavior in Morocco, followed by self-efficacy, and then perceived severity. By contrast, ANN analysis showed that perceived severity was the most vital factor for predicting the protective behavior in Morocco, followed by perceived benefits, and then self-efficacy.
