In raw sewage sludge, the Zn and Cu were mainly presented in the organically bound fraction, i.e., 45.3 ± 3.2% of total Zn and 48.3 ± 1.4% of total Cu. The addition of MGDA and EDTA caused obvious distribution transformations in Zn and Cu from the organically bound fraction to soluble fraction. According to the reduced partition index calculation, the mobility of Zn, Cu, Ni, and Cr was not significantly lowered after the MGDA treatment. However, the HMs secondary pollution risk of the sludge was reduced due to the drop of the total HMs content after chelator leaching. Findings from this study suggest that MGDA could be a potential environment-friendly alternative for refractory chelators (e.g. EDTA) in the decontamination of HMs from sludge.Waste generation is one of the greatest problems of present times, and the recycling of carbon fibre reinforced composites one big challenge to face. Currently, no resin valorisation is done in thermal fibre recycling methods. However, when pyrolysis is used, additional valuable compounds (syngas or H2-rich gas) could be obtained by upgrading the generated vapours and gases. This work presents the thermodynamic and kinetic multi-reaction modelling of the pyrolysis vapours and gases upgrading process in Aspen Plus software. These models forecast the theoretical and in-between scenario of a thermal upgrading process of an experimentally characterised vapours and gases stream (a blend of thirty-five compounds). Indeed, the influence of temperature (500 °C-1200 °C) and pressure (ΔP = 0, 1 and 2 bar) operating parameters are analysed in the outlet composition, residence time and possible reaction mechanisms occurring. Validation of the kinetic model has been done comparing predicted outlet composition with experimental data (at 700 °C and 900 °C with ΔP = 0 bar) for H2 (g), CO (g), CO2 (g), CH4 (g), H2O (v) and C (s). Kinetic and experimental results show the same tendency with temperature, validating the model for further research. Good kinetic fit is obtained for H2 (g) (absolute error 0.5 wt% at constant temperature and 0.3 wt% at variable temperature) and H2O (v) shows the highest error at variable T (8.8 wt%). Both simulation and experimental results evolve towards simpler, less toxic and higher generation of hydrogen-rich gas with increasing operating temperature and pressure. The present study analysed the levels of potentially toxic elements along with physico-chemical properties of agricultural soil samples (n = 59) collected from fields situated along the path of river Ganga in the middle Gangetic floodplain in two districts, Ballia and Ghazipur. Arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) levels were analysed by Wavelength Dispersive-X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (WD-XRF) and the associated health risks along with diverse indices were calculated. The mean concentrations of As, Cu, Cr, Pb, Zn and Ni were found to be 15, 42, 85, 18, 87 and 47 mg kg-1, respectively in Ballia and 13, 31, 73, 22, 77 and 34 mg kg-1, respectively in Ghazipur. Physico-chemical properties like pH, ORP and organic matter were found to be 7.91, 209 and 1.20, respectively in Ballia and 8.51, 155 and 1.25, respectively in Ghazipur. The calculated health quotient (HQ) for all the elements was observed to be within the threshold value of one, however with few exemptions. Therefore, the present study showcases the contamination of potentially toxic elements in agricultural fields and possible health hazards for people.Pollution of water resources and a lack of potable water are two important issues that city dwellers in India encounter. The passage of untreated sewage down municipal drains is one of the most significant sources of water resource pollution. In densely populated areas, effective sanitation and wastewater management is becoming increasingly difficult. In many developing nations, centralized sewage and wastewater treatment facilities serve only a section of big cities, and on-site sanitation is frequently insufficient in heavily populated areas. There is a demand for complementary and intermediate solutions. DEWATS (community-managed anaerobic decentralized wastewater treatment systems) is a good option for the possibility of relatively fast sanitation improvements in high-priority neighbourhoods where the local authority is not providing a full sanitation service. The following technical treatment modules are typically seen in DEWATS. The primary treatment consists of sedimentation ponds, settlers, septic tanks or bio digester, secondary treatment consists of anaerobic baffled reactors, anaerobic filters or anaerobic and facultative pond systems, secondary aerobic/facultative treatment consists of horizontal gravel filters and post-treatment consists of aerobic polishing ponds. The experience of India in establishing community-managed DEWATS on a large scale is examined in this review. The fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) is a migratory filter-feeding species that is susceptible to ingest plastics while lunge feeding across the oceans. Plastic additives, such as phthalates, are compounds that are added to plastics to give them specific characteristics, such as flexibility. These so-called plasticizers are currently raising major concern because of their potential adverse effects on marine fauna. However, little is known about phthalate concentrations in tissues of baleen whales as well as their potential relation with biological variables (i.e., sex, body length and age) and their trends with time. In this study, we assessed the concentration of 13 phthalates in the muscle of 31 fin whales sampled in the feeding grounds off western Iceland between 1986 and 2015. We detected 5 of the 13 phthalates investigated, with di-n-butylphthalate (DBP), diethylphthalate (DEP) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) being the most abundant. None of the biological variables examined showed a statistically significant relationship with phthalate concentrations. Also, phthalate concentrations did not significantly vary over the 29-year period studied, a surprising result given the global scenario of increasing plastic pollution in the seas. The lack of time trends in phthalate concentration may be due in part to the fact that phthalates also originate from other sources. Although no adverse effects of phthalates on fin whales have been detected to date, further monitoring of these pollutants is required to identify potential toxic effects in the future.Harvesting algal biomass reduces nutrient loading in eutrophicated lakes and the protein-rich microalgal biomass could be recycled as feedstocks of feed and fertilizer. Due to the complexity of algogenic organic matter (AOM), the key components and functional groups in AOM that inhibit coagulation-based microalgal harvesting have not been disclosed thus far. This study quantitatively analysed the responsive compositions and functional groups of AOM involved in the dissolved air flotation (DAF) harvesting of M. flos-aquae with 1 × 109 cell L-1 density at coagulation pH 6.2. The results showed that harvesting efficiency dropped drastically from 95.5 ± 0.7% to 43 ± 0.7% in the presence of AOM (26.77 mg L-1) at the coagulant dosage of 0.75 mg L-1 and further deteriorated with increasing AOM concentration. Carbohydrates contributed 81% of the total composition of substances involved in the DAF, while the contribution of protein and humic-like substances were only 18% and 1%, respectively. Stoichiometric analysis of functional groups in carbohydrates, proteins, and humic-like substances using model components revealed that carboxyl groups in uronic acid-containing carbohydrates accounted for 76% of the total reduction in carboxyl groups, which was much higher than that in proteins (23%) and humic-like substances (1%), indicating that carboxyl groups in uronic acids containing carbohydrates were the major inhibitors. A conceptual model of charge competition was proposed to explain the inhibition mechanism of carboxyl functional groups in uronic acid-containing carbohydrates on microalgal DAF. Strategies such as preventing carboxyl deprotonation by pH reduction and employment of sweeping/bridging polymeric coagulants/flocculants were proposed for the to reduce the inhibitory effect of carboxyl functional groups.Previous work from us and others has suggested that cholesterol is an important lipid in the context of the organization of the actin cytoskeleton. However, reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton upon modulation of membrane cholesterol is rarely addressed in the literature. In this work, we explored the signaling crosstalk between cholesterol and the actin cytoskeleton by using a high-resolution confocal microscopic approach to quantitatively measure changes in F-actin content upon cholesterol depletion. Our results show that F-actin content significantly increases upon chronic cholesterol depletion, but not during acute cholesterol depletion. In addition, utilizing inhibitors targeting the cholesterol biosynthetic pathway at different steps, we show that reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton could occur due to the synergistic effect of multiple pathways, including prenylated Rho GTPases and availability of membrane phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate. These results constitute one of the first comprehensive dissections of the mechanistic basis underlying the interplay between cellular actin levels and cholesterol biosynthesis. We envision these results will be relevant for future understating of the remodeling of the actin cytoskeleton in pathological conditions with altered cholesterol.
Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is an ocular inflammatory disease with symptoms driven by eosinophils and mast cells. Allergic comorbidities are common. Current treatments are often ineffective in severe AC and limited by potential side effects. see more Lirentelimab is an anti-sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin-8 mAb that depletes eosinophils and inhibits mast cells.
We sought to determine safety and preliminary efficacy of lirentelimab in an open-label, phase 1b study.
Patients with chronic, severely symptomatic atopic keratoconjunctivitis, vernal keratoconjunctivitis, and perennial AC, and who had history of topical or systemic corticosteroid use, were enrolled to receive up to 6 monthly lirentelimab infusions (dose 1 0.3 mg/kg, dose 2 1 mg/kg, subsequent doses 1 or 3 mg/kg). Changes from baseline in peripheral blood eosinophils, changes in patient-reported symptoms (measured by daily Allergic Conjunctivitis Symptom Questionnaire, including atopic comorbidities), changes in investigator-reported oculentelimab was well tolerated, improved severe AC and concomitant atopic symptoms, and reduced inflammatory mediators in patient tears.
Lirentelimab was well tolerated, improved severe AC and concomitant atopic symptoms, and reduced inflammatory mediators in patient tears. The human digestive and absorption system has a specific pH environment, which makes it difficult to for accurate drug-release. Zwitterionic hydrogel, as a kind of drug carrier, is a feasible response strategy. In this work, a facile method was employed to prepare a series zwitterionic hydrogels composed of BC and chitosan. The composite gels could in-situ formed via Schiff's base reaction between partially oxidated bacterial cellulose and chitosan which exhibited relatively well mechanical properties. Besides, the rich amino and carboxyl groups endowed the hydrogels with excellent pH responsive performance. The minimum swelling rate of the hydrogels appeared at pH 3.5-pH 5.0. In lower or higher pH solutions, the swelling rate was greatly increased. The drug (naproxen) loading of the hydrogels was above 110 mg/g. The release amount of naproxen in the simulated gastric juice was less than intestinal fluid with the sustained release time exceeded 24 h. Through kinetic simulation analysis, the drug release behavior is in accordance with zero-order release model.
