We will focus on one of the key cases analyzed by Freud, the one he himself named the "Rat Man" (fictional name for patient Ernst Lanzer) and analyzed as an "obsessive neurosis". As in the Dora case, in this clinical case Freud intends to describe the prototype of obsessive neurosis in which no element is missing. Everything is there sexual and forbidden thoughts that obsess the subject, aggressive thoughts towards the people he loves (especially the one called the "lady" and his own father), the sense of duty and debt that are imposed in the form of an expensive constraint, etc. However, a careful examination of the patient's symptoms and behavior both in his daily life and with his therapist allows us to ask ourselves whether this is really a "neurotic" disorder and not a different pathology, particularly in relation to psychotic disorders. Although Freud's diagnosis of obsessive neurosis may evoke the current obsessive-compulsive disorder, other pathologies and comorbidities that would relativize the main diagnosis must be considered.Subclinical depression is a worldwide spread disease with significant impact on health and life quality. The goal of this study is to assess its prevalence, service utilization, and to identify the most vulnerable groups in 18 to 64 years-old residents of San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina. A survey was administered to a stratified sample of the study population. The CESD-R scale was applied to establish the diagnosis. Sociodemographic and health-care service utilization information was collected as well. The prevalence of subclinical depression was 10% (CI 95% 6.9%-14.0%). A trend of higher prevalence was observed among younger subjects, and in lower socioeconomic neighborhoods. One third of subjects with subclinical depression had previously consulted a health professional and less than half of them had been correctly diagnosed. Early detection and treatment of subclinical depression is key to diminishing the associated disability and to prevent its evolution to major depression. It is necessary to implement early detection strategies, specifically directed to the most vulnerable groups younger people and lower socioeconomic strata.INTRODUCTION In the last few years, use of psychotherapy has been studied in both our country and other parts of the world. The aim of our study was to determine the current prevalence of psychotherapy use, its characteristics and to compare it with the study done in 2007. METHOD A survey was conducted among 1348 inhabitants over 18 years of age in the city of Buenos Aires between April and May 2019 and it was compared with the study done in the year 2007. RESULTS During the month prior to the survey, 19.9% of the sample received psychotherapy treatment. selleckchem Psychotherapy treatment is more prevalent among women, middle-aged people and individuals with a higher educational level. Half of the treatments were psychoanalytic and the majority of them were individual and with a private funding source. Only one out of 5 had signed an informed consent before starting the treatment, and only one in 4 had been informed about other treatment options. In comparison with the previous survey, in which the prevalence of psychotherapeutic treatment in the last month was of 15,6%, in this survey a greater percentage of individuals had psychotherapy, although with a lower frequency and mainly with private funding. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of psychotherapy in the city of Buenos Aires is high and has increased in the last decade.Aging is a major risk factor for morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular causes in men. To better understand the cellular processes related to age-related cardiac complications, we undertook research aimed at comparative evaluation of genes expression and distribution of β-catenin, CacyBP/SIP, galectin-3 and LMP7 in the heart of healthy men in different age groups. The study was conducted on the hearts of 12 men (organ donors) without a history of cardiovascular disease, who were divided into two age groups men under and men over 45 years of age. On paraffin sections, immunohistochemical reactions were performed to detect β-catenin, CacyBP/SIP, galectin-3 and immunoproteasome subunit LMP7. The expression of genes coding β-catenin, CacyBP/SIP, galectin-3 and LMP7 was also evaluated by real-time PCR method. In the heart of men over 45 years old, both gene expression and immunoreactivity of β-catenin, CacyBP/SIP, galectin-3 and LMP7 were stronger compared to younger individuals. The results of the presented studies suggest that β-catenin, CacyBP/SIP, galectin-3 and immunoproteasomes might be involved in the internal regulation of heart homeostasis during ageing.[This corrects the article DOI 10.1371/journal.pgen.1007533.].[This corrects the article DOI 10.1371/journal.pone.0224822.].Unlike HIV infection, SIV infection is generally nonpathogenic in natural hosts, such as African green monkeys (AGMs), despite life-long high viral replication. Lack of disease progression was reportedly based on the ability of SIV-infected AGMs to prevent gut dysfunction, avoiding microbial translocation and the associated systemic immune activation and chronic inflammation. Yet, the maintenance of gut integrity has never been documented, and the mechanism(s) by which gut integrity is preserved are unknown. We sought to investigate the early events of SIV infection in AGMs, specifically examining the impact of SIVsab infection on the gut mucosa. Twenty-nine adult male AGMs were intrarectally infected with SIVsab92018 and serially sacrificed at well-defined stages of SIV infection, preramp-up (1-3 days post-infection (dpi)), ramp-up (4-6 dpi), peak viremia (9-12 dpi), and early chronic SIV infection (46-55 dpi), to assess the levels of immune activation, apoptosis, epithelial damage and microbial translocatioomorbidities.[This corrects the article DOI 10.1371/journal.pone.0221172.].Antibiotic combinations are increasingly used to combat bacterial infections. Multidrug therapies are a particularly important treatment option for E. faecalis, an opportunistic pathogen that contributes to high-inoculum infections such as infective endocarditis. While numerous synergistic drug combinations for E. faecalis have been identified, much less is known about how different combinations impact the rate of resistance evolution. In this work, we use high-throughput laboratory evolution experiments to quantify adaptation in growth rate and drug resistance of E. faecalis exposed to drug combinations exhibiting different classes of interactions, ranging from synergistic to suppressive. We identify a wide range of evolutionary behavior, including both increased and decreased rates of growth adaptation, depending on the specific interplay between drug interaction and drug resistance profiles. For example, selection in a dual β-lactam combination leads to accelerated growth adaptation compared to selection with the individual drugs, even though the resulting resistance profiles are nearly identical.
