The tumor immune microenvironment in temporal bone squamous cell carcinoma (TBSCC), including the programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), has not been established.

Retrospective cohort study.

We performed immunohistochemistry analyses to retrospectively analyze 123 TBSCC cases for PD-L1 expression and TILs and their prognostic significance. We also evaluated the prognostic correlations between these immunomarkers and the therapeutic responses to chemoradiotherapy (CRT).

PD-L1 expression (≥1%) was detected in 62 (50.4%) TBSCC cases and was significantly associated with worse prognosis progression-free survival (PFS), P < .0001; overall survival (OS), P=.0009. A high density of CD8

TILs was significantly associated with better prognosis (PFS, P=.0012; OS, P=.0120). In contrast, a high density of Foxp3

TILs tended to be associated with an unfavorable prognosis (PFS, P=.0148; OS, P=.0850). With regard to the tumor microenvironment subtypes defined by CD8

TILs and PD-L1 expression, the CD8

/PD-L1

group showed significantly worse prognosis. Among the 36 neoadjuvant CRT-treated cases, PD-L1 expression was significantly associated with worse OS (P=.0132). Among the 32 CRT-treated cases without surgery, a high density of CD8

TILs tended to be more highly associated with complete response to CRT compared to a low density of CD8

TILs (P=.0702).

These results indicate that the evaluation of the tumor immune microenvironment may contribute to the prediction of prognoses and the selection of an individualized therapeutic strategy for patients with TBSCC.

Zinc-biofortified rice could contribute to zinc intake in deficient populations, but processing it into parboiled rice could affect this potential benefit. Zinc and iron true retention (TR) in milled rice produced under conditions resembling household and commercial parboiled methods was evaluated. Zinc and iron TR in milled rice obtained from biofortified and non-biofortified rice subjected to different soaking temperatures during parboiling was also evaluated.

Conditions resembling commercial parboiling methods resulted in 52.2-59.7% zinc TR and 55.4-79.1% iron TR, whereas those used for household parboiling resulted in 70.7-79.6% zinc TR and 78.2-119.8% iron TR. Zinc TR in milled (8-16% bran removal) biofortified and non-biofortified parboiled rice was 50.6-66.8% when soaking rough rice at 20 °C and 29.9-56.0% when soaking rough rice at 65 °C; both had lower zinc TR than non-parboiled rice (58.0-80.6%). Iron TR was generally similar between milled non-parboiled and parboiled rice (26.2-67.6%) and betweperm moved towards the outer layers at high soaking temperature, resulting in lower zinc TR for milled parboiled rice soaked in hotter water. Parboiled rice soaked at temperatures used in households could provide more zinc to diets compared to rice soaked in hotter water commonly used in large rice mills, especially when rice is extensively milled. © 2021 The Authors. The misuse of antibiotics is a persistent problem in both human and veterinary medicine. While complex social and behavioural factors drive inappropriate use in human medicine, less is known about factors that impact antibiotic use in companion animal medicine.

To identify the perceptions that veterinarians practicing companion animal medicine hold about the influence of financial considerations on antibiotic use.

Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with veterinarians practicing companion animal medicine in a major metropolitan area in the Eastern United States. Respondents were sampled purposefully, and data were analysed using a thematic analysis approach.

Interviews were conducted with 36 veterinarians from 19 practices. Veterinarians believed that their clients' willingness to pay for diagnostic testing or treatment interfered with their ability to make appropriate decisions about antibiotic use. selleck kinase inhibitor Concerns over antibiotic expiration and subsequent financial losses limited which antibiotics veterinarians stocked. Some veterinarians feared that restricting antibiotic use to appropriate uses could harm their business and lead to economic euthanasia of their patients.

Veterinarians perceive that financial factors can impede their ability to appropriately prescribe antibiotics. Interventions that address the financial aspects of prescribing have the potential to improve antibiotic decision-making in veterinary medicine.

This study shows that Holdemanella biformis, isolated from the feces of a metabolically healthy volunteer, ameliorates hyperglycemia, improves oral glucose tolerance and restores gluconeogenesis and insulin signaling in the liver of obese mice. These effects were associated with the ability of H. biformis to restore GLP-1 levels, enhancing GLP-1 neural signaling in the proximal and distal small intestine and GLP-1 sensitivity of vagal sensory neurons, and to modify the cecal abundance of unsaturated fatty acids and the bacterial species associated with metabolic health. Our findings overall suggest the potential use of H biformis in the management of type 2 diabetes in obesity to optimize the sensitivity and function of the GLP-1 system, through direct and indirect mechanisms.
