Aged-care facilities are high-risk settings for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreaks because residents have risk factors such as advanced age and multiple comorbidities. This report details a COVID-19 outbreak at an aged-care facility in Selangor, Malaysia during March-April 2020.

Epidemiological and environmental data were gathered via telephone interviews and field investigations. Swab samples were taken from all residents and staff for laboratory investigation. Possible contributing factors to the outbreak were explored.

There were a total of 18 individuals at the institution nine elderly residents and nine staff. The attack rate was 66.67% (6/9) among the elderly residents and 55.56% (5/9) among the staff. The most common symptoms reported were fever, cough, shortness of breath and diarrhoea. The fatality rate among COVID-19 cases was 18.18% (2/11). Both fatal cases occurred in people of advanced age (86 and 92 years old), who had comorbidities and had fever at presentation. The factors contributing to the outbreak included a delay in isolating symptomatic residents, the use of common facilities, caregivers providing support to more than one resident and a lack of natural ventilation.

Prevention and control measures must be aggressively implemented in high-risk sites to significantly reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality during COVID-19 outbreaks. Specific guidelines should be developed detailing the management of outbreaks in institutions such as aged-care facilities.

This research study is a pilot study designed to help answer this initial question. Hepatosplenic candidiasis (HSC) used to be reported in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) without antifungal prophylaxis. The aim was to describe the clinical features and outcomes of HSC over the last 13 years in a single French hematology center.

All patients diagnosed with HSC between 2008 and 2020 were included in a single-center retrospective cohort study. Data were collected from patient charts, and HSC was classified according to the 2020 European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer/Mycoses Study Group definitions.

Sixty patients were included, with 18.3% proven, 3.3% probable, and 78.3% possible HSC according to the 2020 European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Mycoses Study Group classification. The outcomes of hematogenous periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) and reasons for failure are largely unknown.

The outcomes of consecutive patients with hematogenous PJI treated at our institution between 2010 and 2019 were evaluated. Failure was classified as persistence or relapse of infection or new infection. Failure-free survival was assessed using Kaplan-Meier analysis. Proportions between groups were compared with the Fisher exact test.

One hundred thirty-two hematogenous PJI episodes involving knee (n = 76), hip (n = 54), shoulder (n = 1), or elbow (n = 1) prostheses experienced by 110 patients were included. The median follow-up (range) was 20.7 (0.2-89.9) months. Hematogenous PJIs were caused by

A systematic review was performed to provide an overview of studies (2005-2020) on the effectiveness of antimicrobial therapy that used propensity score methods. A quality assessment tool and a standardized quality score were developed to evaluate a subset of studies in which antibacterial therapy was investigated in detail. The scale of this standardized score ranges between 0 (lowest quality) and 100 (excellent).

Little is known about vaccine efficacy and sustainability among people with HIV (PWH). We estimated humoral and cellular immune responses postvaccination with BNT162b2 mRNA coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine among PWH in Tel-Aviv Medical Center.

The vaccine humoral response was evaluated by measuring immunoglobulin G (IgG) titers of antispike receptor-binding domain antibodies (anti-RBD IgG). Cellular response was assessed by stimulating donor peripheral blood mononuclear cells with pooled complete S-peptide mix.

One hundred thirty-six PWH who completed 2 doses of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine were tested for anti-RBD IgG and compared with 61 vaccinated health care workers (HCWs). The antibody titers were similar between the groups (median, 118 BAU/mL for PWH and 101.4 BAU/mL for HCWs;

 = .008). Of the 30 patients who had abnormal eye exams, 9 (30%) had a change in systemic antifungal therapy from echinocandins to eye-penetrating antifungals. Echinocandin use was associated with abnormal eye findings.
