And both SBP and DBP decreased significantly after acute nitrate supplementation of a single dose (<1 day) or more than 1-week. However, participants with hypertension at baseline were not associated with significant changes in both SBP and DBP. Subgroup analysis of measurement methods showed that only the resting BP group showed a significant reduction in SBP and DBP, compared with the 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) group and daily home BP measurement group.
These results demonstrate that consuming inorganic nitrate can significantly reduce SBP and DBP in older adults, especially in whose age≥65, BMI>30, or baseline BP in prehypertension stage.

Despite many studies over the past decades, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying its neurotoxicity remain unclear. The present study was designed to examine the acute effects of cadmium chloride (CdCl2) on the electrical activity of the Retzius nerve cells of leech Haemopis sanguisuga using electrophysiological techniques. CdCl2, in concentrations of 10-100 μM, produced a dose- and time-dependent depolarization of Retzius neurons, paralleled by an increase in firing frequency and action potential duration. To examine potential mechanisms, we studied the effects of cadmium on the outward potassium current upon depolarization using a point microelectrode voltage-clamp technique. Reduction of the fast, and partial inhibition of the slow outward current were observed after adding 50 and 100 μM CdCl2 in the external fluid. The present results support the view that the effect of cadmium on the outward potassium channel may be a potential contributing mechanism for cadmium-induced neurotoxic damage. The proposed mechanism of cadmium action on the electrical properties of leech Retzius neurons might have broader significance concerning not only the leeches but vertebrate brains as well.Biologically active compounds used in agriculture that develop near aquatic environments easily spill into rivers or lakes. As a result, insecticides, herbicides and fungicides are observed worldwide in aquatic environments and accumulated in aquatic organism. Many insecticides, including organochlorine and organophosphate, have long been banned long ago because of their high persistence and non-target toxicity. However, previous studies have shown that persistent pesticides remain in aquatic organisms. The immune system is the first defense mechanism against exposure to persistent organic pollutants or pesticides that have been released into the aquatic environment. Many insecticides have been reported to cause immunotoxicity, which is represented by alteration of phagocytic and lysozyme activity. Recent studies show that immunotoxicity by insecticides exerts a more complex mechanism in fish. Insecticides induce immunotoxic effects, such as the release of inflammatory cytokines from head kidney macrophages and inhibition of immune cell proliferation in fish, which can lead to death in severe cases. Even currently used pesticides, such as pyrethroid, with low bioaccumulation have been shown to induce immunotoxicological effects in fish when exposed continuously. Therefore, this review describes the types and bioaccumulation of insecticides that cause immunotoxicity and detailed immunotoxicological mechanisms in fish tissues.Proprioception in old age is thought to be poorer due to degeneration of the central (CNS) and peripheral nervous systems (PNS). We tested whether community-dwelling older adults (65-83 years) make larger proprioceptive errors than young adults (18-22 years) using a natural reaching task. selleck kinase inhibitor Subjects moved the right arm to touch the index fingertip to the stationary or moving left index fingertip. The range of locations of the target index fingertip was large, sampling the natural workspace of the human arm. The target arm was moved actively by the subject or passively by the experimenter and reaching arm movements towards the target were made under visual guidance, or with vision blocked (proprioceptive guidance). Subjects did not know the direction or speed of upcoming target hand motion in the passive conditions. Mean 3D distance errors between the right and left index finger tips were small in both groups and only slightly larger when vision was blocked than when allowed, but averaged 2-5 mm larger in older than in younger adults in moving (p = 0.002) and stationary (p = 0.07) conditions, respectively. Variable errors were small and similar in the two groups (p > 0.35). Importantly, clearly larger errors were observed for reaching to the stationary than to the moving index fingertip in both groups, demonstrating that dynamic proprioceptive information during movement permits more accurate localization of the endpoint of the moving arm. This novel finding demonstrates the importance of dynamic proprioceptive information in movement guidance and bimanual coordination.
To investigate whether current contraceptive uptake, unmet need for contraception, and unintended pregnancy among female adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) vary with the model of access sites for HIV-related services, that is, stand-alone youth clinics (YCs) versus general primary health clinics (PHC).
Exit interviews.
Multi-center, primary healthcare facilities.
Female adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) aged 14-19 years and interviewed between March 1, 2017 and July 31, 2017.
Structured exit paper-based survey. Participants were divided into stand-alone YC and general PHC groups.
Uptake of contraceptive counseling and products were compared between the 2 clinic groups.
A total of 303 female ALHIV completed the exit interviews. For female ALHIV, contraceptive prevalence was high among both general PHCs (84.2%) and stand-alone YCs (82.9%). Contraceptive method mix was similar between both groups of female ALHIV. Compared to stand-alone YCs, the general PHCs had similar likelihood of contraceptive counseling provision (aOR 0.
