Cardiac remodeling is recognized as an important aspect of cardiovascular disease (CVD) progression. Machine learning (ML) techniques were applied to basic clinical parameters and electrocardiographic features, in order to detect abnormal left ventricular geometry (LVG) even before the onset of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), in a population without established CVD. The authors enrolled 528 patients with and without essential hypertension, but no other indications of CVD. All patients underwent a full echocardiographic evaluation and were classified into 3 groups; normal geometry (NG), concentric remodeling without LVH (CR), and LVH. Abnormal LVG was identified as increased relative wall thickness (RWT) and/or left ventricular mass index (LVMi). The authors trained supervised ML models to classify patients with abnormal LVG and calculated SHAP values to perform feature importance and interaction analysis. The aim of the present paper was to evaluate cases of lumbar degenerative diseases treated with oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF) using a modified lateral approach (i.e. anteroinferior psoas exposure under direct vision) and to analyze the effect and safety of this approach.

From June 2016 to April 2019, a total of 226 patients with an average age of 65.5 ± 16.2 years (98 men and 128 women) with degenerative lumbar diseases who underwent the AIP approach of OLIF were followed up and analyzed retrospectively. Data concerning operative and clinical parameters were collected, including operative time, intraoperative estimated blood loss, duration of postoperative hospital stay, and time to ambulation after surgery. For the assessment of clinical outcomes, the visual analogue scale (VAS) score (for back pain) and the Oswestry disability index (ODI) were calculated. Complications were also recorded as surgical exposure approach-related complications. More than 6 months after surgery, 132 patients consent exposure approach-related complications were reported, with an incidence of 4.9% transient thigh pain/numbness, psoas weakness (2.2%), sympathetic chain injury (1.3%), cage subsidence (0.9%), and segmental artery injury (0.4%). Twenty-seven patients with previously untreated, bilateral advanced retinoblastoma who were enrolled on a prospective treatment protocol (NCT00186888). We established mesocosm trials to compare three bioremediation strategies natural attenuation, bioaugmentation and biostimulation. Chemical analysis, culture-dependent and culture-independent methods were used to evaluate the bioremediation efficiency and speciation of the microbial cenoses based on these approaches. After treatment for 90days, bioaugmentation removed 75·2-75·9% of the HMW hydrocarbons, biostimulation removed 63·2-69·5% and natural attenuation removed ~22·5%. Hydrocarbon degradation was significantly enhanced in the mesocosm supplemented with the biosurfactant-producing bacterial strain after 20 and 50days of treatment compared to the other bioremediation strategies.
