This study was designed to explore the transport process and characteristics of MeO-PBDEs using a BeWo cell monolayer model to simulate the placental barrier effect. Concentration-dependent transplacental transport indicates that the transport of MeO-PBDEs may be dominated by passive diffusion within the studied concentration range. According to the apparent permeability coefficients, MeO-BDE congeners investigated can be classified as poorly transported compounds, with the exception of MeO-BDE28. Time-dependent transplacental transport was observed (R2 = 0.97-0.99), which showed that the intracellular accumulation of MeO-PBDEs followed pseudo-first-order kinetics process. The transport process of MeO-PBDEs in the BeWo cell assay was not found to be sensitive to the pH of 6.5-7.4. An efflux transporter, breast cancer resistance protein, may be involved in the transport process of some MeO-PBDE congeners, and influx transporters, including organic anion transporters and organic cation transporters, may also be involved in the transport process. Although the present results indicated the possible transplacental transport mechanism, more molecular biological studies should be conducted to advance the understanding of the transport mechanisms.Fluridone is widely used in ambient water bodies to control the spread of invasive aquatic plants. While the ability of fluridone to control aquatic weeds such as water hyacinth is well reported, an improved understanding of fluridone persistence in water and sediment is still needed to determine potential residues of fluridone in the water column and bed sediment of ambient water bodies. In this study, experiments were conducted over a three-month period to examine the degradation of fluridone in saturated sediment and water under various levels of UV-light (0-1000 μW/cm2), and temperature (4-40 °C). Results showed a large decrease in the half-life of fluridone in water with increasing UV light intensity, but in saturated sediment the impact of UV light exposure on fluridone degradation was minimal. At low temperature (4 °C), the degradation of fluridone in both water and sediment was minimal. At elevated temperature (20-40 °C), fluridone degradation was increased in water and sediment. Additionally, the persistence of fluridone in sediment was reduced by increasing sand content in the sediment matrix. Possible fluridone transport through the subsurface was estimated over a range of initial concentrations, groundwater velocities, fluridone half-lives, and fluridone sorption coefficients which may be seen in a field environment. A form of the Ogata-Banks equation which accounts for 1st order decay was used for describing the dispersion of fluridone, while a related equation from Bear, 1979 was utilized to quantify advection. In all tested scenarios, maximum transport was less than 10 m over one month of observation. Results of this study will improve our existing understanding of fluridone persistence and in water and sediment.This work discusses the identification of the transformation products (TPs) generated during the photolytic degradation of dextromethorphan (DXM) and its metabolite dextrorphan (DXO), under simulated solar radiation in aqueous solutions (Milli-Q water and river water) in order to determinate its behavior into the aquatic environment. Tentative identification of the TPs was performed by liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC/QTOF-MS), following a suspect screening approach. The use of high resolution-mass spectrometry (HRMS) allowed the tentative identification of DXM and DXO photoproducts based on the structure proposed by an in silico software, the accurate mass measurement, the MS/MS fragmentation pattern and the molecular formula finding. A total of 19 TPs were found to match some of the accurate masses included in a suspect list, and they were all tentatively identified by their characteristic MS-MS fragments. The time-evolution of precursors and TPs were monitored throughout the experiments, and degradation kinetics were presented for each analyte. Research question How can balance confidence impact turning behavior in younger, middle-aged, and older men and women? Methods This cross-sectional study included 22 young adults (11 women), 13 middle-aged adults (9 women), and 13 older adults (6 women). Participants ranked their balance confidence using the activities-specific balance confidence (ABC) scale and completed two different turns Turn1 (around the cone) and Turn2 (turn to sit). Measures obtained for each turn included turning time, step count, and peak trunk velocities (PTV) in pitch, yaw, and roll. Results In Turn1, older adults exhibited an increase in turning time and step count relative to younger adults (both p less then 0.03). In Turn2, older adults showed an increase in turning time and roll PTV compared to the middle-aged group (both p less then 0.02). Lower scores in ABC were significantly correlated with an increase in Turn1 time (p less then 0.001) and step count (p = 0.04) in middle-aged and older adults, respectively. Bivariate correlations revealed that women with lower scores on the ABC took more time to complete both turns (both p = 0.01). Significance Older adults demonstrated longer turning time, more steps, and higher roll PTV while turning that were associated with decreased balance confidence scores. The association between decreased balance confidence and turning kinematics implies a relationship between turning and increased fall risk. These results suggest that testing for fall risk requires tests of activities that are performed outside traditional clinical settings and gait laboratories.
