Formation of non-covalent dimers typical of the cholinesterases is documented for mammalian neuroligins, yet whether invertebrate neuroligins and their neurotactin, gliotactin and glutactin relatives also form dimers in physiological conditions is unknown. Here we provide a brief overview of the localization, function, evolution, and conserved versus individual structural determinants of these cholinesterase-like cell-adhesion proteins. To explore the relationship between research time during urologic training and career academic success.

We included urologists graduating residency between 2002 and 2008 from 36 programs affiliated with a top 50 hospital for urology as ranked by the United States News and World Report, and collected research time during residency, fellowship training, current appointment (private practice, assistant professor, associate professor, professor, chair), national institutes of health (NIH) grant accrual, NIH R01 grant accrual, and current H-index in Scopus database. Publication output during and after residency was identified through the PubMed database.

In our cohort of 543 urologists, 66.3% of graduating trainees pursued private practice. Increasing residency research time was associated with increased publication count (P <.001), pursuit of professor positions (P <.001), and NIH funding (P <.001). One year of dedicated research increased the odds of being in the top 10th percentile of publication output during residency (odds ratio [OR] 5.7, 95% confidence interval [CI] 2.7-12.1), pursuing a fellowship (OR 2.0, 95% CI 1.3-3.1), promotion to professor (OR 4.9, 95% CI 2.0-12.2), obtaining a NIH grant (OR 6.2, 95% CI 2.3-16.5), and decreased the odds of pursuing private practice (OR 0.4, 95% CI 0.3-0.6). As amount of time dedicated to research in urologic residency increased from 3-4 to 6-12 months, OR increased for career academic success metrics.

To evaluate the risk upgrading of active surveillance (AS), we reviewed the outcomes of African American men (AA) after electing AS. Selleckchem PMSF AS is the standard of care for men with low-grade prostate cancer (PCa). AA are known to have more advanced PCa features and are more likely to die from PCa, thus subsequent disease progression for AA on AS is unclear.

A prospectively maintained AS database from the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Administration Medical Center, New Orleans, Lousiana was queried. We identified men with low- and very low-risk PCa (Gleason 3 + 3, PSA <10, ≤CT2a) who had undergone at least 2 prostate biopsies, including initial diagnostic and subsequent confirmatory prostate biopsies. Descriptive and comparative statistical analysis was performed using R version 3.5.1.

From a total of 274 men on AS (70% AA), 158 men met inclusion criteria (104 AA [66%]). All patients underwent at least 2 biopsies, and 29% underwent 3 or more biopsies. The median follow-up was 2.7 years. At 3 years on AS protocol, 57% AA and 61% Caucasians demonstrated no evidence of upgrading or treatment. No significant difference was observed between upgrading or progression to treatment when comparing racial groups. Seven (4%) patients in this cohort died from non PCa-specific causes, but no patients demonstrated metastasis or death from PCa over the course of study.

To review our experience using clips to control the renal vessels during laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN) and determine the safety of this practice.

We performed a retrospective review of patients who underwent LDN at our centre January 1, 2007-September 17, 2019. The primary outcome was the rate of complication associated with vascular control of the renal vessels, which included (1) conversion to open to manage bleeding, (2) additional procedures for bleeding, and (3) major bleeding requiring blood transfusion. Secondary outcomes included the rate of renal artery/vein clip dislodgement or crossing, change in hemoglobin, warm ischemia time and the incidence of intra-operative complications and postoperative in-hospital complications.

We included 503 patients who underwent LDN, of which 497 were left sided. The main renal artery was controlled with 3 titanium clips in 489 (97%) cases. The main renal vein was controlled with 2 polymer-locking clips in 478 (95%) cases. For our primary outcome, there were no conversions to open to manage bleeding, no secondary procedures due to bleeding and no major bleeding requiring blood transfusion. Additionally, there were no donor deaths. Regarding our secondary outcomes, there were 5 intraoperative events related to the titanium clips being placed on the renal artery and 1 intraoperative event related to the polymer-locking clips on the renal vein, none of which resulted in any morbidity.

As part of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis, mass drug administration is distributed to communities until surveillance indicates infection rates are below target prevalence thresholds. In some countries, including American Samoa, lymphatic filariasis transmission persists despite years of mass drug administration and/or has resurged after cessation. Nothing is known about the population genetics of Wuchereria bancrofti worms in Polynesia, or whether local transmission is persisting and/or increasing due to inadequate mass drug administration coverage, expansion from residual hotspots, reintroduction from elsewhere, or a combination. We extracted DNA from microfilariae on blood slides collected during prevalence surveys in 2014 and 2016, comprising 31 pools of five microfilariae from 22 persons living in eight villages. We sequenced 1104 bp across three mitochondrial markers (ND4, COI, CYTB).
