A literature search through April 2020 was performed to identify relevant cohort and case-control studies. Data from these studies were meta-analyzed to generate summary relative risk estimates (SRREs). Heterogeneity was examined in sub-group and sensitivity analyses, and by meta-regression.

Twenty-two studies were reviewed systematically, and 10 cohort studies and one case-control study were meta-analyzed. Upon oral intake, AA is rapidly absorbed and distributed to all organs. AA is a known human neurotoxicant that can reach the developing foetus via placental transfer and breast milk. Although adverse neurodevelopmental effects have been observed after prenatal AA exposure in rodents, adverse effects of AA on the developing brain has so far not been studied in humans. However, epidemiological studies indicate that gestational exposure to AA impair foetal growth and AA exposure has been associated with reduced head circumference of the neonate. Thus, there is an urgent need for further research to elucidate whether pre- and perinatal AA exposure in humans might impair neurodevelopment and adversely affect neuronal function postnatally. Here, we review the literature with emphasis on the identification of critical knowledge gaps in relation to neurodevelopmental toxicity of AA and its mode of action and we suggest research strategies to close these gaps to better protect the unborn child.

Current studies on Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) are predominantly correlational and have largely been conducted outside of the U.S. with little attention to cultural aspects. This study aimed to qualitatively examine ON-related attitudes and behaviors among U.S. college students, with a particular focus on exploring concerns related to healthy eating and diet quality as defined by proposed diagnostic criteria, body image concerns and disordered eating, and sociocultural influences.

Eighteen women and 3 men, aged 18-23 years (M=19.5, SD=1.6), who had reported high levels of ON symptoms participated in individual interviews. Exploratory factor analysis and multivariate logistic regression were used as statistical analyses. The mean age was 26 and 53.7% of the students observed an increase in their weight. Four dietary patterns were identified (1) a predominantly in natura pattern, (2) a pattern of processed and ultra-processed foods, (3) a protein-based pattern, and (4) an infusion-based pattern. It was observed that students having a darker skin colour (OR 1.8; CI 95% 1.3-2.6) and 19-29 years old and not being a health course student (OR 1.5; CI 95% 1.1-2.1) were associated with greater adhesion to the in natura pattern. Not engaging in physical activity was statistically associated with not adhering (OR 0.5; CI 95% 0.4-0.7) to that pattern. The university students who saw an alteration in their weight during the social distancing period studied presented a greater probability of consuming the processed and ultra-processed foods pattern (OR 1.8; CI 95% 1.2-2.6), while the men (OR 0.7; CI 95% 0.4-0.9) and those not engaging in physical activity (OR 0.7; CI 95% 0.5-0.9) presented less adhesion to that pattern. These findings indicate that social isolation affected the dietary intake of university students, with adhesion to mixed dietary patterns in terms of health. We further found that fenpropathrin-mediated oxidative stress might inhibit autophagic flow, including decreased expression of LC3A/B and enhanced expression of SQSTM1 via down-regulation of CDK-5, an upstream marker of autophagy. In mice, autophagy was slightly different from that found in astrocytes, as reflected in the increased expressions of LC3A/B and SQSTM1. Our findings elucidate the toxicological phenomena and pathogenic mechanisms of fenpropathrin and may provide guidance for improved pesticide control and environmental protection.
