To evaluate the impact of the ASTM International (formerly American Society of Testing Materials) safety standard and associated product safety changes on accidental exposures to liquid laundry packets (LLPs) in children.
The National Poison Data System was queried for reports of accidental exposures to LLPs in children <6 years old received from 01 July 2012 to 31 December 2018. In 2014, ASTM International began developing a standard specifying voluntary product changes to reduce the risk of LLP exposures in young children. Product changes were made between 2013 and 2016. Exposures were grouped into baseline, transition, and post periods based on the timing of the standard's implementation. Exposure counts and sales adjusted rates were compared between the baseline and post period for all exposures and exposures involving healthcare facility (HCF) evaluation, HCF admission, and major medical outcomes.
A total of 73,942 accidental exposures in children <6 years old were reported (baseline 10,229, g monitoring should be performed to determine if additional safety measures are required.
More attention has been paid to the eradication therapy of
with the enhancement of health awareness of patients. However, the increasing antibiotic resistance of
, due to the wide use and abuse of antibiotics, has become a critical factor affecting the efficacy of eradication. To effectively improve the eradication rate of
, high-dose amoxicillin-proton pump inhibitor (PPI) dual therapy has recently become one of the hot issues.
The authors review the schemes and efficacy of high-dose amoxicillin-PPI dual therapies in eradication of
infection. check details The review indicates that the
eradication rate of the dual therapy is overall comparable to or better than that of bismuth-containing quadruple therapy or standard triple therapy. link2 It is more effective to administer both amoxicillin and PPI 3-4 times daily for 14days in the high-dose amoxicillin-PPI dual therapy, and esomeprazole seems to be superior to other PPIs.
The high-dose amoxicillin-PPI dual therapy is currently a promising
eradication regimen in clinical practice, deserving further verification and discussion. Much more attention should be paid to the influence of CYP2C19 polymorphisms and virulence genotyping on
eradication, and the homogeneity and objectivity of the comparison among different studies.

The roles of inflammation and hypercoagulation in predicting outcomes of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are unclear.
Adult patients diagnosed with COVID-19 from 28 January 2020 to 4 March 2020 in Tongji Hospital, Wuhan were recruited. Data on related parameters were collected. Univariate analysis and multivariable binary logistic regression were used to explore predictors of critical illness and mortality.
In total, 199 and 44 patients were enrolled in the training and testing sets, respectively. Elevated ferritin, tumor necrosis factor-α and D-dimer and decreased albumin concentration were associated with disease severity. Older age, elevated ferritin and elevated interleukin-6 were associated with 28-day mortality. The FAD-85 score, defined as age + 0.01 * ferritin +D-dimer, was used to predict risk of mortality. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of FAD-85 were 86.4%, 81.8% and 86.4%, respectively. A nomogram was established using age, ferritin and D-dimer to predict the risk of 28-day mortality.

Common treatment strategies are based on exercise, diet and nutrient supplementation since PCOS is often linked with obesity and metabolic impairment. Studies have recommended that nutrition is a key factor in the health maintenance of women with PCOS, however, little is known about the subject in the context of such a disease. This narrative review aims to identify dietary and nutritional aspects of PCOS and discuss the role of nutrients in management of polycystic ovary syndrome in view of clinical trials. The psychoactive plant Salvia divinorum has long been used medicinally by Indigenous people from southern Mexico, the only place where it is endemic, and is now studied by pharmaceutical researchers. I analyze competing ways the two groups "make medicine" with salvia, attending simultaneously to material/embodied and semiotic/linguistic dimensions of those practices. I introduce two concepts - stripping and enrobing - to show that differences in how the groups interact with salvia have ethical and political consequences. Those repercussions matter because salvia is but one of many plants important to marginalized groups whose ties to them are threatened by international medical interests.
Epidemic thunderstorm asthma (ETSA) is due to a complex interaction of environmental and individual susceptibility factors, with outbreaks reported globally over the last four decades. Australia has been particularly susceptible with nearly half of episodes reported internationally, culminating in the catastrophic Melbourne 2016 event.
Reported ETSA episodes are reviewed for common environmental and meteorological risk factors. Allergen aerobiology interaction with thunderstorm activity and rapid weather condition changes is examined. Assessment of the clinical and immunological data highlights risk factors for ETSA presentation, hospital admission, and intensive care admission. Risk factors associated with ETSA deaths are evaluated. Public health strategies, as well as pharmacological and immunological management approaches to reduce individual susceptibility and prevent ETSA are discussed.
Improved understanding of the specific meteorological factors predisposing to the greatest risk of ETSA to improvn and preventive strategies.
This retrospective case-series study aims to provide an overview of the clinical, biochemical and analytical findings in patients who presented with toxicity related to the use of illegitimate slimming agents in Hong Kong from the perspective of a tertiary referral toxicology laboratory.
All clinical cases referred to the Hospital Authority Toxicology Reference Laboratory, Hong Kong with clinical suspicion of illegitimate slimming agent-related toxicity between January 2008 and December 2017 were reviewed retrospectively. The use of illegitimate slimming agents included the use of (1) deregistered slimming agents, (2) drug analogues that were not registered drugs, (3) registered drugs not approved for the indication of weight reduction (whether prescribed by a doctor or not), and (4) prescription-only slimming agents without a doctor's prescription. Patients taking registered weight-reducing drugs prescribed by a doctor were excluded. Patient demographics, clinical features, relevant laboratory investigate imperative to prevent further health adversities related to the misuse of these agents.
While chloroquine, a derivative of quinine, has been used as an antimalarial for 70 years, hydroxychloroquine is now used to treat conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. In 2020, hydroxychloroquine (and to a lesser extent chloroquine) also received attention as a possible treatment for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). During investigation for treating coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by SARS-CoV-2, concerns for serious adverse events arose.
We review the toxicity associated with hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine use both short-term and long-term and in overdose.
Medline (
OVID) was searched from its inception through June 7 2020 using the following as either MeSH or keyword terms ("Chloroquine/" or "Hydroxychloroquine/") AND ("Adverse Drug Event/" or "Toxicities, Drug/" or "Toxic.mp." or "Toxicity.mp." or "Overdose.mp."). We limited resultant articles to those published in English and reporting on Human subjects. This search yiogic reactions, and neuropsychiatric events. Cardiotoxicity became of increased concern with its use in COVID-19 patients. Long-term (years) toxicities include retinopathy, neuromyotoxicity, and cardiotoxicity (conduction abnormalities, cardiomyopathy). Deaths from overdoses most often result from cardiovascular collapse.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is considered to be the leading cause of nonfatal injury to women worldwide. Moreover, the need for effective training for health care professionals (HCPs) and protocol for addressing IPV in health care contexts are well-documented. This article addresses key questions that radiologists may have related to supporting patients who have experienced IPV.
Peer-reviewed journal articles and other formal reports were located using Google Scholar and PubMed in order to assemble this review.
Radiologists are well-equipped to help identify possible instances of IPV if they are aware of the injury patterns commonly associated with IPV. Along with other HCPs, radiologists can also advocate for the implementation of protocols that will guide their responses to victims of IPV within their own health care institution.

A total of 594 Korean game users (average age = 23.5 years, 70.37 percent male) participated and completed questionnaires containing the K-IGDS9-SF and other measures for its validation. The K-IGDS9-SF showed good reliability (Cronbach's α = 0.86, composite reliability coefficient = 0.87). Consistent with previous studies, the K-IGDS9-SF demonstrated a single-factor structure in a confirmatory factor analysis. Moreover, the K-IGDS9-SF had significant associations with related variables (IGD, game playing variables, self-esteem, impulsivity, and loneliness) in the expected direction, supporting its concurrent, criterion, and convergent validity. Taken together, these results indicated that the K-IGDS9-SF has satisfactory psychometric properties, suggesting its utility as a unified robust instrument for studying IGD worldwide.
