This article examines the material culture of domesticity in late nineteenth-century English convalescent institutions. click here Convalescent homes drew on powerful Victorian ideas about the physical and moral benefits of "home-like" domestic comfort, which they contrasted with the "institutional" environment of hospitals and the degrading surroundings of urban slums. Administrative records, press accounts, photographs, and patient letters reveal how convalescent homes cultivated temporary home-like environments through architecture, interior decoration, and behavioral expectations and routines. Convalescent homes drew on heterogeneous models of domesticity, including the grand architecture of country estates, the possession-packed spaces of middle-class homes, and the recreational spaces of male social clubs. Nevertheless, they shared a belief in the power of domestic spaces, comforts, and practices to support the recovery of convalescents and to influence their identity and behavior. The material culture and practices of domesticity deployed in convalescent homes encouraged reflection, self-improvement, and self-control-qualities essential to the cultivation of respectable, self-governing, liberal citizens. Three of them were successfully produced in Escherichia coli One extracellular enzyme from GH43 (subfamily 12, in PUL10, 60 kDa) and two enzymes from PUL15, one extracellular GH10 (41 kDa), and one intracellular GH43 (subfamily 137 kDa). Based on our results we propose that in PUL15, GH10 (1) is an extracellular endo-1,4-β-xylanase, that hydrolyses mainly glucuronosylated xylan polymers to xylooligosaccharides (XOS); while, GH43_1 in the same PUL, is an intracellular β-xylosidase, catalysing complete hydrolysis of the XOS to xylose. In PUL10, the characterized GH43_12 is an arabinofuranosidase, with a role in degradation of arabinoxylan, catalysing removal of arabinose-residues on xylan.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its risk factors disproportionately affect people returning from incarceration. These individuals face multiple barriers to obtaining care, which can impact CVD and risk factor management and may be mitigated through use of a smartphone application (app). Therefore, we explored the CVD-related needs of people released from incarceration and which app features would support these needs.

In 2019, we collected qualitative data through 7 focus groups with 76 returning citizens and 19 key informants through interviews and small group discussions in Baltimore, Maryland. Verbal data were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using inductive thematic coding with N-Vivo qualitative software.

Returning citizens face multiple barriers when trying to engage in care and services related to cardiovascular health, including around medications and health insurance. Some major challenges were identifying trusted social services and making cardiovascular health a priority. Findings suggested that CVD risk factors could be more effectively addressed in combination with attending to other pressing needs related to employment, housing, behavioral health, and building trust. Participants suggested that a smartphone app would be most useful if it broadly addressed these issues by linking returning citizens to social services, including recommendations from peers, and facilitating access to healthcare.

Returning citizens need broad support for societal reintegration. Addressing social issues would allow them to focus on cardiovascular health.

Given the challenges experienced after release from incarceration, an app focused on social and health-access issues may help returning citizens meet their CVD needs.

The goals of this study are to describe the value and impact of Project HealthDesign (PHD), a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that applied design thinking to personal health records, and to explore the applicability of the PHD model to another challenging translational informatics problem the integration of AI into the healthcare system.

We assessed PHD's impact and value in 2 ways. First, we analyzed publication impact by calculating a PHD h-index and characterizing the professional domains of citing journals. Next, we surveyed and interviewed PHD grantees, expert consultants, and codirectors to assess the program's components and the potential future application of design thinking to artificial intelligence (AI) integration into healthcare.

There was a total of 1171 unique citations to PHD-funded work (collective h-index of 25). Studies citing PHD span medical, legal, and computational journals. Participants stated that this project transformed their thinking, altered their career trajec are potentially useful to other work on cyber-physical systems, such as the use of AI in healthcare, to propose structural or policy-related changes that may affect adoption, value, and improvement of the care delivery system.The nearly ubiquitous presence of amino acids in the nectar of flowering plants has led to significant interest in the relevance of these compounds to pollinator behavior and physiology. A number of flower-visiting animals exhibit behavioral preferences for nectar solutions containing amino acids, but these preferences vary by species and are often context or condition dependent. Furthermore, the relative strength of these preferences and potential influence on the foraging behavior of flower-visiting animals remains unclear. Here, we used innate preference tests and associative learning paradigms to examine the nectar preferences of the flower-visiting hawkmoth Manduca sexta, in relation to both sugar and amino acid content. Manduca sexta exhibited a strong preference for higher sucrose concentrations, while the effect of amino acids on innate feeding preference was only marginally significant. However, with experience, moths were able to learn nectar composition and flower color associations and to forage preferentially (against innate color preference) for nectar with a realistic amino acid composition. Foraging moths responding to learned color cues of nectar amino acid content exhibited a behavioral preference comparable to that observed in response to a 5% difference in nectar sucrose concentration. These results demonstrate that experienced foragers may assess nectar amino acid content in addition to nectar sugar content and caloric value during nectar-foraging bouts.Carotenoids color many of the red, orange and yellow ornaments of birds and also shape avian vision. The carotenoid-pigmented oil droplets in cone photoreceptors filter incoming light and are predicted to aid in color discrimination. Carotenoid use in both avian coloration and color vision raises an intriguing question is the evolution of visual signals and signal perception linked through these pigments? Here, we explore the genetic, physiological and functional connections between these traits. Carotenoid color and droplet pigmentation share common mechanisms of metabolic conversion and are both affected by diet and immune system challenges. Yet, the time scale and magnitude of these effects differ greatly between plumage and the visual system. Recent observations suggest a link between retinal carotenoid levels and color discrimination performance, but the mechanisms underlying these associations remain unclear. Therefore, we performed a modeling exercise to ask whether and how changes in droplet carotenoid content could alter the perception of carotenoid-based plumage. This exercise revealed that changing oil droplet carotenoid concentration does not substantially affect the discrimination of carotenoid-based colors, but might change how reliably a receiver can predict the carotenoid content of an ornament. These findings suggest that, if present, a carotenoid link between signal and perception is subtle. Deconstructing this relationship will require a deeper understanding of avian visual perception and the mechanisms of color production. We highlight several areas where we see opportunities to gain new insights, including comparative genomic studies of shared mechanisms of carotenoid processing and alternative approaches to investigating color vision.In wild animals, telomere attrition during early development has been linked with several fitness disadvantages throughout life. Telomerase enzyme can elongate telomeres, but it is generally assumed that its activity is suppressed in most somatic tissues upon birth. However, recent evidence suggests that this may not be the case for long-lived bird species. We have therefore investigated whether telomerase activity is maintained during the postnatal growth period in a wild yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) population. Our results indicate that telomerase activity is not negligible in the blood cells, but activity levels sharply decline from hatching to fledging following a similar pattern to the reduction observed in telomere length. Our results further suggest that the observed variation in telomere length may be the result of a negative effect of fast growth on telomerase activity, thus providing a new mechanism through which growth rates may affect telomere dynamics and potentially life-history trajectories.Physical activity (PA) contributes to health throughout life. In particular, young people can benefit from this. Schools can play a key role in providing learning conditions to experience meaningful PAs aimed at inspiring students to lifelong PA. In this article, we argue the need for a salutogenic approach in schools focussing on respecting and enhancing adolescents' agency with regard to their PA. link3 This approach entails listening to adolescents' perspectives and inviting them to participate in actively designing and carrying out PA as a prerequisite for their inclusive engagement. We unpack the concept of agency by drawing on insights from the Capability Approach. This provides input for the integration of agency in health promoting schools and salutogenic approaches, to enhance PA-related agency. Finally, we outline a research agenda to, eventually, create opportunities for students in schools to expand their PA-related agency.
