To describe the clinical and ultrasound characteristics of three rare malignant ovarian germ cell tumors embryonal carcinoma, non-gestational choriocarcinoma and malignant mixed germ cell tumor.

This is a retrospective multicenter study. From the International Ovarian Tumor Analysis (IOTA) database, we identified seven patients with a histological diagnosis of ovarian embryonal carcinoma, non-gestational choriocarcinomas and malignant mixed germ cell tumors, who had undergone preoperative ultrasound examination by an experienced ultrasound examiner between 2000 and 2020. Another six patients with the same histology were identified from the databases of gynecological oncology in the participating centers. All tumors were described using IOTA terminology. Three authors reviewed all available ultrasound images and described them using pattern recognition.

One patient with embryonal carcinoma, five patients with non-gestational ovarian choriocarcinoma, and seven patients with ovarian malignant mixed germ ceould raise the suspicion of a rare malignant germ cell tumor. This suspicion can guide the clinician to test tumor markers specific for malignant germ cell tumors. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

A unilateral, large solid tumor with inhomogeneous echogenicity of the solid tissue, and with dispersed small cystic areas, in a young woman should raise the suspicion of a rare malignant germ cell tumor. This suspicion can guide the clinician to test tumor markers specific for malignant germ cell tumors. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

This study aimed to evaluate frequency, location and severity of cartilage pathology in dogs with naturally occurring cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease.

 Stifle arthroscopic video recordings (

= 120) were reviewed. selleck chemicals llc A modified Outerbridge classification system (MOCS) (0-4) was used to score cartilage at 10 locations in the femorotibial (medial and lateral femoral condyles and tibial plateaus) and patellofemoral compartments (proximal, middle and distal locations of the patella and femoral trochlear groove) of the stifle joint. Synovial pathology was scored and the presence of a medial meniscal tear was recorded. A Kruskal-Wallis test was used to evaluate association of location and synovitis with cartilage score; and presence of meniscal tear with cartilage and synovitis scores. Bonferroni correction was utilized and

 < 0.05 was considered significant.

Cartilage pathology and synovitis were identified in all joints. Overall cartilage severity scores were low (median MOCS 1). The median MOCS of the proximal trochlear groove (2) was significantly higher than all other locations evaluated. Higher synovitis scores were significantly associated with higher cartilage severity scores and a medial meniscal tear had no association with cartilage severity scores or synovitis.

Arthroscopic articular cartilage lesions are common in dogs with CCL disease at the time of surgical intervention, although the severity of cartilage damage is mild. The proximal trochlear groove of the femur had the most severe cartilage score in the stifle joint.

Indeed, Brazil flaunts a coastline spanning 8000 km through tropical and temperate regions and hosting part of the organisms accredited for the country's megadiversity status. Still, biodiversity may be expressed at different scales of organization; besides species inventory, genetic characteristics of living beings and metabolic expression of their genes meet some of these other layers. These metabolites produced by terrestrial creatures traditionally and lately added to by those from marine organisms are recognized for their pharmaceutical value, since over 50% of small molecule-based medicines are related to natural products. Nonetheless, Brazil gives a modest contribution to the field of pharmacology and even less when considering marine pharmacology, which still lacks comprehensive in-depth assessments toward the bioactivity of marine compounds so far. Therefore, this review examined the last 40 years of Brazilian natural products research, focusing on molecules that evidenced anticancer potential-which represents ~ 15% of marine natural products isolated from Brazilian species. This review discusses the most promising compounds isolated from sponges, cnidarians, ascidians, and microbes in terms of their molecular targets and mechanisms of action. Wrapping up, the review delivers an outlook on the challenges that stand against developing groundbreaking natural products research in Brazil and on a means of surpassing these matters.Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is a metabolic disorder characterized by lipid overloading in hepatocytes that can progress pathogenically and even end in hepatocellular carcinoma. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease pharmacological treatment is still limited by unwanted side effects, whereas the use of food components with therapeutic potential is advisable. The culinary use of marine algae is traditional for some populations and reviving worldwide, with promising health outcomes due to the large number of bioactive compounds found in seaweeds. The present review focuses on brown-algae polysaccharides, particularly fucoidan, alginate, and laminarin, and summarizes the experimental evidence of their potential effects against nonalcoholic fatty liver disease onset and progression. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrate that brown-algae polysaccharides exert beneficial actions on satiety feeling, caloric intake, fat absorption, and modulation of the gut microbiota, which could account for indirect effects on energy and lipid homeostasis, thus diminishing the fat overload in the liver. Specific effects against nonalcoholic fatty liver disease pathogenesis and worsening are also described and sustained by the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antisteatotic properties of brown-algae polysaccharides. Further studies are required to clarify the mechanism of action of brown-algae polysaccharides on liver cells, to determine the composition and bioavailability of brown-algae polysaccharides present in different algal sources and to probe the clinical availability of these compounds in the form of algal foods, food supplements, and regulated therapeutics.
