About Toto
Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also famous studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word that means "all all-encompassing," the group was determined to explore every musical style.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a flop however, they bounce back with their fourth release Isolation with two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour made them a household brand all over the world.
After a hiatus of a few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is different from the ballads that were featured on previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. The album was their first album to go platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are financially in trouble. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name with an alternative producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a huge tour around the world. After a few weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
Music
Toto is a rock group from America that achieved their greatest success in the 1980s. The band was founded by experienced session musicians and has sold more than 40 million albums around the world.
The first toto album was the self-titled Toto album, which came out in 1978. The album was a huge success and launched the band into international fame. Since then, the band has released fourteen more albums, which have also been a hit.
Toto composed their first and only film score in 1984 for the film Dune. It was a massive undertaking and the entire band had to be involved. The album that came out, Kingdom of Desire, was a record that also had a great success. After a world tour drummer Bobby Kimball left the band and was replaced by drummer Fergie Frederiksen, who was a member of Le Roux. The band continued with their fifth studio album, Isolation. The album contained a variety of hits, such as "Stranger in Town".
After Isolation Toto was put on a break. This gave each member of the band the opportunity to explore their own solo projects. In 1996, the band was reformed to tour and make an album. It was the first time in over a decade that all of the original members were together on stage.
The following year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the last time that all of Toto's original members were on stage at once. After that, the group was again disbanded. However, Toto reunited in 2010 to perform a benefit for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time in more than 31 year that all of Toto's founding members were on stage together. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
Tours

Despite their fame, the band faced several setbacks in their later years. In 2002, keyboardist David Paich and drummer Greg Phillinganes were forced to take a medical leave of absence. Drummer Shem von Schroeck was brought in and the band was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, Toto decided to take off from touring following changes to the lineup and a disappointing series of releases. The group returned to the road in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around The Sun.
The album marked a return to form for the group, and the tour accompanied it with sold-out shows in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gathered momentum after the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
