Activated clotting time (ACT) is a non-specific test to evaluate the adequacy of systemic heparinization whose value could be influenced by many factors. selleck chemicals Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a widely used antifibrinolytic agent worldwide and whether TXA influences ACT value in cardiac surgical patients remains unknown. Several studies have shown that the application of ultrasounds (US) accelerates the processes of energy and mass transfer when they are applied through immersion systems. However, there are hardly any studies on its application in direct systems without the use of a liquid medium for its transmission. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of the application of US for improving the freezing process of chicken breast samples. First, the application of intermittent US treatments at different net sonication times of 7, 17, 37, 50 and 67% during the freezing of distilled water samples in a conventional freezer was evaluated. It was observed that net sonication times of 37, 50 and 67% reduced the phase change period by 30.0, 21.4, 27.0%, respectively. The effective freezing time was also reduced by 12.4 and 12.8% by applying net sonication times of 37 and 50%. Considering these results, an intermittent US treatment with a net sonication time of 37% was chosen for chicken breast freezing in an air-forced cooling tunnel at ambient temperatures from -13 to -22 °C. The length of all the freezing phases was reduced upon application of US, leading to an overall process time reduction of approx. 11%. On the other hand, no significant differences were found either in the Water Holding Capacity (WHC) or Cooking Loss (CL) values between control and US assisted frozen chicken breast samples. Furthermore, in vitro experiments showed that US-assisted freezing did not influence protein digestibility of chicken meat samples. This study demonstrates the potential of the application of US by direct contact to favor energy transfer processes during freezing of water and chicken breasts samples. However, its effect on the quality of the frozen products should be further studied.The use of thermosonication (TS) technique to preserve the qualities of fruit juice as an alternative to conventional pasteurization has attracted research interest in recent times. In the present study, freshly prepared hog plum juice (control), and the juice samples subjected to pasteurization (90 °C for 60 s) and thermosonication (40 kHz, 400 W at 40, 50 and 60 °C each for 5, 10, 20 and 30 min) were each analyzed for physicochemical, bioactive, microbial and sensory properties. After treatment, no significant changes in pH, total soluble solids and titratable acidity were observed. Notably, TS at 40 and 50 °C significantly (p less then 0.05) improved color parameters, cloudiness and browning index. Furthermore, thermosonication increased ascorbic acid (11.40-18.55%), total phenolic content (17.98-18.35%), carotenoids (2.19-4.30%), flavonoids (10-16%) and antioxidant activity (32.52-48.5%) relative to the control. Both treatments significantly reduced the microbial count to non-detectable level after processing, while sensory attributes slightly improved. However, TS treatment at 60 °C decreased most of the quality parameters. Results showed that TS can improve quality, safety and economic potential of hog plum juice as a feasible alternative to pasteurization.Endometritis is a prevalent post-partum uterine infection in dairy cows resulting in suboptimal reproductive performance. The hypothesis was that endometritis status is associated with suboptimal reproductive performance of postpartum dairy cows managed under zero-grazing feeding practice on smallholder farms. In this study, there was evaluation of effects of endometritis diagnosed at 38.5 ± 14.7 days postpartum (dpp) on subsequent reproductive performance. Reproductive performance of 436 cows from 345 farms was recorded for 210 dpp. Values for reproductive performance indicators were less (P less then 0.05) in cows determined to be positive compared to negative for endometritis. Cows that tested positive, as compared to negative, for endometritis had longer periods after parturition until initiation of oestrous cycles (median, interquartile range; 85.0, 57.5-127.0 and 62.6, 49.0-90.0 days, respectively), longer durations before being detected pregnant (95.5, 61.8-145.5 and 63.0, 50.0-83.0 days, respectively), lesser pregnancy rates as a result of the first breeding postpartum (16.5% and 32.7%, respectively), more natural-mating or artificial inseminations per pregnancy (1.3 ± 0.1 and 1.1 ± 0.0, respectively) and more occurrences of anoestrus postpartum (48.4% and 11.7%, respectively). These results provide evidence of a strong association between endometritis and suboptimal fertility performance in zero-grazed cows on smallholder farms in Rwanda. Considering there were 70.2% of cows in the present study were diagnosed with endometritis, this is indicative of a widespread herd health issue, warranting that field veterinary practitioners prioritise endometritis in their herd health service delivery to smallholder dairy farmers for effective disease management and herd sustainability.
