The findings in the current study suggest that regular low-intensity exercise may have a beneficial effect on both systolic and diastolic functions of the myocardium.Cardiovascular (CV) disease plays a major role after liver transplantation (LT). This prospective study assessed subclinical CV damage after LT by measuring pulse wave velocity (PWV), intima-media thickness (IMT) and left-ventricular mass index (LVMI) and characterized associated risk factors. We included 112 patients with a median of 1.8 years after LT (q1-q3 0.9-9.2). Fifty-three percent (n = 59) of patients had ≥2 annual assessments (median follow-up 1.6 years, q1-q3 1.1-2.0), with a total of 195 assessments. We found increased PWV (indicating arteriosclerosis) in 16% (n = 17), elevated IMT in 5% (n = 5; indicating atherosclerosis) and increased LVMI in 25% (n = 24; indicating left-ventricular hypertrophy). A linear mixed model analysis using all 195 assessments revealed that higher age and systolic blood pressure (BP) were associated with higher PWV (β = 0.069, P less then 0.001 and β = 0.022, P = 0.005) and higher IMT (β = 0.005, P less then 0.001 and β = 0.001, P = 0.029), while higher body mass index was associated with higher IMT (β = 0.004, P = 0.023). Higher systolic BP (β = 0.200, P = 0.034), male sex (β = 8.847, P = 0.031) and lower glomerular filtration rate (β = -0.288, P less then 0.001) were associated with higher LVMI. Our data highlight not only the rate of subclinical CV damage in LT patients, but also the impact of classical CV risk factors (such as BP and body mass index) which outweighed LT-related factors. Chronic HCV infection is usually accompanied by decrease of libido and erectile dysfunction. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of new oral direct acting antiviral (DAA) therapy on sexual function of male patients with HCV. This study was conducted on 200 male participants divided into two groups, first group included 100 male patients with HCV and the second group included 100 healthy age matched males as a control. Patients received DAA for three months and virological free status was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction. All participants were subjected to full history taking, general examination and local genital examination, assessment of sexual function by a validated Arabic version of the international index of erectile function-5. Laboratory investigations included liver functions serum testosterone, free testosterone, sex hormone-binding globulin and bioavailable testosterone. Results of this study showed that patients with HCV suffer from sexual dysfunction than controls that significantly improved after DAA therapy, and this is accompanied by increasing of bioavailable testosterone. It could be concluded that beside its effectiveness in treatment of HCV infection, DAA therapy can improve sexual function in male patients with HCV.

Little is known about skin-related complications in Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS), a complex vascular anomaly defined by capillary malformation (CM), venous malformation (VM)±lymphatic malformation (LM) and limb overgrowth. Reported skin-related complications of KTS include ulceration, vascular ectasias (blebs), bleeding and infection.

To determine the spectrum, prevalence and predictors of skin-related complications in KTS.

A retrospective review of 410 patients fulfilling KTS criteria was performed to assess for the presence of skin-related complications.

Skin-related complications were present in 45% of patients. Most prevalent were CM-related complications including blebs, bleeding, thickening (25%), cellulitis (22%) and ulceration (21%). Features positively associated with skin-related complications were presence of LM (OR 17.17; P<0.001), VM on the buttocks/perineum/genitalia (OR 1.92; P=0.009), CM on the feet (OR 1.77; P=0.039) and male sex (OR 1.63; P=0.034). Features negatively associated with skin-related complications were CM on the trunk (OR 0.59; P=0.029) and tissue hypertrophy of the hands (OR 0.27; P=0.025).

Serum AGP-1 (sAGP-1) is primarily derived from hepatocytes and circulates as 12-20 different glycoforms. We isolated a glycoform secreted from platelet-activating factor (PAF)-stimulated human neutrophils (nAGP-1). Its peptide sequence was identical to hepatocyte-derived sAGP-1, but nAGP-1 differed from sAGP-1 in its chromatographic behavior, electrophoretic mobility, and pattern of glycosylation. The function of these 2 glycoforms also differed. sAGP-1 activated neutrophil adhesion, migration, and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETosis) involving myeloperoxidase, peptidylarginine deiminase 4, and phosphorylation of ERK in a dose-dependent fashion, whereas nAGP-1 was ineffective as an agonist for these events. Furthermore, sAGP-1, but not nAGP-1, inhibited LPS-stimulated NETosis. Interestingly, nAGP-1 inhibited sAGP-1-stimulated neutrophil NETosis. In this review, we discuss the diverse strategies used by common bacterial pathogens, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Helicobacter pylori, and enteropathogenic Escherichia coli, to disrupt epithelial cell junctions during infection. During the last decade transport mechanisms have turned out to be the key for the control of local and long-distance hormone distributions. In contrast with auxin, cytokinin transport is poorly understood. Here, we show that Arabidopsis thaliana AZG2, a member of the AZG purine transporter family, acts as cytokinin transporter involved in root system architecture determination. Even though purines are substrates for both AZG1 and AZG2, we found distinct transport mechanisms. The expression of AZG2 is restricted to a small group of cells surrounding the lateral root (LR) primordia and induced by auxins. Compared to the wild-type (WT), mutants carrying loss-of-function alleles of AZG2 have higher LR density, suggesting that AZG2 is part of a regulatory pathway in LR emergence. Moreover, azg2 is partially insensitive to exogenous cytokinin, which is consistent with the observation that the cytokinin reporter TCSnpro GFP showed lower fluorescence signal in the roots of azg2 compared to the WT. These results indicate a defective cytokinin signalling pathway in the region of LR primordia. The integration of AZG2 subcellular localization and cytokinin transport capacity data allowed us to propose a local cytokinin auxin signalling model for the regulation of LR emergence.This paper presents pollutant concentrations and performance data for code-required mechanical ventilation equipment in 23 low-income apartments at 4 properties constructed or renovated 2013-2017. All apartments had natural gas cooking burners. Occupants pledged to not use windows for ventilation during the study but several did. Measured airflows of range hoods and bathroom exhaust fans were lower than product specifications. Only eight apartments operationally met all ventilation code requirements. Pollutants measured over one week in each apartment included time-resolved fine particulate matter (PM2.5 ), nitrogen dioxide (NO2 ), formaldehyde and carbon dioxide (CO2 ) and time-integrated formaldehyde, NO2 and nitrogen oxides (NOX ). Compared to a recent study of California houses with code-compliant ventilation, apartments were smaller, had fewer occupants, higher densities, and higher mechanical ventilation rates. Mean PM2.5 , formaldehyde, NO2 , and CO2 were 7.7 µg/m3 , 14.1, 18.8, and 741 ppm in apartments; these are 4% lower, 25% lower, 165% higher, and 18% higher compared to houses with similar cooking frequency. This manuscript reviews the history and evidence basis for coaching, differentiates coaching from traditional mentorship, and presents some constructs of coaching and working with a coach. An example of a successful pilot program to disseminate coaching skills and support leadership growth among anesthesiologists, the Women's Empowerment and Leadership Initiative within the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia, is described.
