Spatial configuration and plant phenotypic plasticity contribute to increased light capture in relay intercropping, but there is little information on whether these factors also increase light capture in simultaneous intercropping. We developed and validated a three-dimensional functional-structural plant model to simulate light capture in maize and soybean sole crops and intercrop scenarios, using species traits observed in sole crops and intercrops. The intercrop maize phenotype had 2% greater light capture than the sole crop phenotype in a pure stand. The soybean intercrop phenotype had 5-10% lower light capture than the sole crop phenotype in a pure stand. The intercrop configuration increased the light capture of maize by 29% and reduced the light capture of soybean by 42%, compared with the light capture expected from sole crops. However, intercrop configuration only marginally affected total light capture by the intercrop system (+1%). Testing of individual soybean plant traits revealed that plasticity in leaf dimensions was the main reason for differences in light capture by soybean in simulated sole crops and intercrops. The results of this study illustrate a major shift of light capture from shorter species (soybean) to the taller component (maize) in a simultaneous strip intercrop. Plastic plant traits modulate this overall effect, but only marginally.

We investigated whether changes in psychosocial work conditions affect the risk of sleep disturbances.

Data pertaining to 2738 males and 1431 females were obtained from the Occupational Health Study of Petroleum Industry Workers (OHSPIW), a prospective cohort study of Chinese petroleum industry workers. The subjects were assessed with regard to work-related stressors, coping resources, and sleep disturbances at baseline (2012) and follow-up (2018). The variations in work stressors and coping resources, which were assessed using the Occupation Stress Inventory-Reviewed (OSI-R), were calculated. Sleep disturbances were evaluated with the self-reported Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).

Increased work stressors (OR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.24-1.99) and decreased coping resources (OR = 2.03, 95% CI = 1.48-2.78) were correlated with the likelihood of sleep disturbances in male and female workers. The primary risk factors included high role overload, increased responsibility, enhanced physical environment stres environments and to strengthen coping resources to prevent work-related sleep disturbances.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs), which are involved in the development of diseases by regulating gene expression, have become promising novel biomarkers for diseases.

The aim of the present study was to identify the circulating circRNA biomarkers for early detection of type 2 diabetes (T2D).

The circRNA expression profiles were screened by microarray and compared between 5 new T2D cases and 5 healthy controls. The expression of candidate circRNAs that may be involved in the insulin phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt) signaling pathway were validated by RT-qPCR in a second sample with 30 T2D cases and 30 controls. The association between circRNAs and T2D and their clinical significances were further assessed by logistic regression model, correlation analysis, and ROC curve in a large cohort comprising 313 subjects. The microRNA (miRNA) targets of circRNAs were verified by dual-luciferase reporter assay and RNA immunoprecipitation assay.

Low expressed circ_0063425 and hsa_circ_0056891 were independent predictors of T2D, impaired fasting glucose (IFG), and insulin resistance. The 2-circRNA panel had a high diagnostic accuracy for discriminating T2D and IFG from healthy controls, especially when body mass index was integrated. miR-19a-3p and miR-1-3p were identified as the miRNA targets of hsa_circ_0063425 and hsa_circ_0056891, respectively. Significant positive correlations were found between the expression levels of AKT and hsa_circ_0063425, PI3K and hsa_circ_0056891, in the total sample and subgroups stratified by glucose levels.

Downregulated hsa_circ_0063425 and hsa_circ_0056891 might contribute to the pathogenesis of T2D. They are valuable circulating biomarkers for early detection of T2D, which may be involved in regulation of PI3K/AKT signaling.

Its asymmetries, defects, or disharmonies are easily noticeable. The complex contours, highlights, shadows, and special shape of its subunits make nasal reconstruction more difficult in panfacial burn than that of nonburned ones. This retrospective study was conducted at Zare Hospital. Twenty-five panfacial burn cases with nasal defects were studied from 2010 to 2019. Profile photos were manipulated by Adobe Photoshop. Based on the difference between the burn-related shortened nasal length and the expected photoshopped one, the severity of the short nose was detected, and the strategy of the surgery was determined. Of the 25 cases, 10 cases with normal nasal length and projection, or mild short nose with minimal alar rim, tip and/or columellar defect underwent nasal reconstruction with skin and/or composite graft. Nine patients with normal nasal length or mild to moderate short nose but moderate to severe alar defect underwent reconstruction with turndown flap plus skin and/or composite graft. Pre-expanded forehead flap (n = 1) and delayed scarred or skin grafted forehead flap (n = 5) were used for six patients with severe short nose defect. There are several procedural alternatives for the reconstruction of burn-related mild to moderate nasal deformity. For severe and deep panfacial burn, delayed forehead flap seems safe with acceptable color and texture harmony. find more Our designed algorithm could potentially improve the selection of proper nasal reconstruction techniques and assist novice surgeons.

Cardiac implantable electronic devices with device advisories have the potential of device malfunction. Remote monitoring (RM) of devices has been suggested to allow the identification of abnormal device performance and permit early intervention. We sought to describe the outcomes of patients with and without RM in devices subject to the Abbott Premature Battery Depletion (PBD) advisory with data from a Canadian registry.

Patients with an Abbott device subject to the PBD advisory from nine implantable cardioverter defibrillator(ICD) implanting centres in Canada were included in the registry. The use of RM was identified from baseline and follow-up data in the registry. The primary outcome was detection of PBD and all-cause mortality. A total of 2666 patients were identified with a device subject to the advisory. In all, 1687 patients (63.2%) had RM at baseline. There were 487 deaths during follow-up. At a mean follow-up of 5.7 ± 0.7 years, mortality was higher in those without a remote monitor compared with RM at baseline (24.
