It is a significant clinical application value and potential.Light is an important environmental factor that regulates the activity of metabolism-related biochemical pathways during tomato maturation. Using LED to improve lighting conditions during the process of tomato growth and development is a feasible and efficient method to improve the quality of tomato fruit. In this study, red and blue LEDs were used to supplement light on "MicroTom" tomato plants for different periods of time in the morning and evening, and the differences between the primary and secondary metabolites and other nutrient metabolites in the tomato fruit were analyzed using liquid chromatography and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry and other methods. Supplementing light in the morning promoted the accumulation of vitamin C, organic acids, amino acids, carotenoids, phenolic acids, and other health-promoting substances in the tomato fruits. Supplementing light in the evening significantly increased the content of sugars, flavonoids, and aromatic substances in tomato fruits, whereas the promoting effect of LED on the accumulation of amino acids and carotenoids was lower in the evening than in the morning. Both morning and evening light supplementation reduced the mineral content of fruit. In conclusion, morning light supplementation improved the nutritional quality of tomato fruits, while evening light supplementation improved their flavor.Food-protein induced protein-losing enteropathy (FPIPLE) is a mixed IgE and non-IgE food allergy in infants along with eosinophilic gastrointestinal (GI) diseases (EGID). It is characterized by poor weight gain, edema, due to hypoproteinemia/hypoalbuminemia by enteral loss of proteins, anemia, eosinophilia, raised fecal α1-antitrypsin (α1AT), and specific-IgE and allergy skin prick test (SPT) positive for offending foods. Here, we describe 4 cases with the same clinical pattern (edema due to hypoproteinemia/hypoalbuminemia from enteral loss of proteins, confirmed by high α1AT in the stools and no other pathological findings explaining the hypoproteinemia including normal kidney and liver function parameters), and propose the term "food-protein induced protein-losing enteropathy" (FPIPLE) to define this clinical entity. We also propose diagnostic criteria and an empirical algorithm of a practical approach to the diagnosis and management for children suspected to have FPIPLE. These infants can be managed successfully with dietary modification. In our 4 cases, initially, an empirical elimination diet was applied, comprising the foods that had benn introduced in the infant's diet during the last month and, an extensively hydrolyzed or elemental formula was given. In a second approach, after evaluation by a pediatric allergist, an allergy test-directed dietary elimination alimentation was implemented, for mother and/or infant. It has yet to be demonstrated whether patients with FPIPLE are a subset of patients with EGID, and whether early intervention modifies the natural course.Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin shown to be associated with several age-related diseases. Although a small number of epidemiological studies described the relationship between vitamin K status and cognitive impairment, vitamin K status was estimated by relatively special methods in previous reports. Here, we demonstrated the association of the concentration of undercarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOC) in serum, which is a biomarker for vitamin K insufficiency, with cognitive function in a cross-sectional study. A total of 800 community-dwelling older adults (mean age = 75.9) were invited to geriatric health examination, including a Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and a blood test. By using binary logistic regression analysis, the risk of cognitive impairment equivalent or below the mild cognitive impairment level for each tertile of ucOC was examined, with the lowest tertile as the reference. We found a significant association of impaired cognitive function and concentration of ucOC in the highest tertile of ucOC, with the odds ratio of 1.65 (95% CI, 1.06 to 2.59, P = 0.028). When the analysis was repeated with each domain of MMSE, the highest tertile of ucOC was associated with impaired orientation, calculation, and language. As far as we know, this is the first report on the significant association of single ucOC measurement and cognitive impairment. Our analysis also suggests that vitamin K insufficiency could be associated with selected categories of cognitive function. Since the single measurement of ucOC in serum is a simple and widely available method for vitamin K evaluation, it could be useful as a biomarker of neurodegenerative diseases affecting the cognitive functions.Body weight loss and inflammation are major alterations related to cancer cachexia, an important wasting syndrome highly prevalent in many types of cancer. Nutritional components modulate inflammation in several chronic diseases. Omega-3 fatty acids (n-3) are well known for their anti-inflammatory properties. However, the effects of n-3 on cancer cachexia are still controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate the reported effects of n-3 supplementation on body weight and inflammatory markers in patients with cancer cachexia. Articles indexed in the major scientific platforms were retrieved in agreement with the Preferring Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) and 167 references were initially found. After removing duplicates and applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, this systematic review included six studies. Using a random-effects model with 95% CI, three effect sizes were expressed as standard mean difference (SMD). No differences were found regarding the effect of n-3 on interleukin-6, C-reactive protein, and albumin levels. Body weight analysis included only two studies, devoid of robust conclusions. The low number of studies, low sample size, and great intra-variability precluded a stronger analysis. More studies evaluating n-3 supplementation in cancer cachexia are still needed.Inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) activity is an effective way for treatment of coronary heart disease. And as an important source of COX-2 inhibitors, bioactive compounds of Choerospondias axillaris and pharmacological mechanisms remained lacking in prospective researches. Therefore, for the purpose of accelerating the discovery of natural products targeting designed inhibitors, the COX-2 microreactor composed of functionalized microspheres and magnetic ligand fishing was developed and applied in Choerospondias axillaris, and the physicochemical properties of the COX-2 functionalized microspheres were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, the bioactive compounds singled out from ethanol decoction without prepurification were dissociated and identified by ultraperformance liquid chromatography plus Q-Exactive Orbitrap tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap-MS/MS). Consequently, 21 bioactive compounds consisting of 6 organic acids, 8 flavonoids, and 7 others were separated and characterized from Choerospondias axillaris, which were reported to participate in the COX-2 inhibitory pathway to varying degrees. Therefore, this method could provide a prospective solution for the extraction and identification of active pharmaceutical ingredients and the rapid screening of some enzyme inhibitors in the complex mixtures.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most prevalent chronic liver diseases worldwide. Dietary vitamin C intake might play an important role in reducing the risk of NAFLD. This study assesses the relationship between dietary vitamin C intake and diagnostic biomarkers of NAFLD.
The data from the 2009 China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), nine provinces across four diverse regions (Northeast, East Coast, Central, and West) were included in the study. The dietary vitamin C intake of participants was calculated based on 3-day 24-h diet questionnaires at the individual level. The associations of dietary vitamin C intake and the biochemical indicators of liver function and glucose/lipid metabolism were determined.
A total of 8,307 participants were included in the final analysis. The mean dietary vitamin C intake for the overall, male and female subjects was 79.8 ± 58.6, 81.6 ± 55.3, and 78.2 ± 61.2 mg/day, respectively. The prevalence of inadequate dietary vitamin C intake for the overall, male and female subjects was 24.4, 26.5, and 22.6%, respectively. Intake of vitamin C was associated with both lower concentrations of plasma ferritin and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). Higher dietary vitamin C intake was associated with higher albumin, even further adjusted for body mass index (BMI), residence, and smoking status. No improvement in lipid metabolism was found.
This study demonstrated that higher dietary vitamin C intake is a benefit for improving glucose metabolism and liver function in which reducing ferritin, a biomarker of iron accumulation, may be involved.

As an indispensable marker of complement cascades activation, C4d was confirmed of its crucial role in the pathogenesis of both lupus nephritis (LN) and IgA nephropathy (IgAN). While the studies directly comparing the diagnostic value, and outcomes predicting function of C4d between LN and IgAN are still absent.
A cohort of 120 LN patients, 120 IgAN patients who were diagnosed by renal biopsy between January 2015 and December 2017 and 24 healthy age matched controls were prospectively analyzed. The patients were followed till December 2020. The outcomes were adverse disease treatment response (disease relapse) and kidney disease progression event (decline of estimated glomerular filtration rate by more than 20% or end-stage kidney disease). The renal C4d deposition proportion and pattern were compared between IgAN and LN patients. In addition, the relationship between renal C4d deposition and disease subtypes, disease relapse as well as disease progression for LN and IgAN patients were also analyzed.
The LN, IgAN patients and healthy controls were well matched in ages.
