Previous studies have suggested that exposure to Ni from Ni-Cr alloys can affect the human body through oxidative stress. The present study discusses the effect of nickel from Ni-Cr alloy prostheses on the formation of DNA Adduct 8-Hydroxy-2'-Deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), evaluated based on creatinine and 8-OHdG concentrations in urine, determined with LC-MS/MS, for a Ni-Cr alloy user group and a never-user control group. The mean creatinine and 8-OHdG concentrations were not significantly different between the test groups, although highest levels were observed for the in the Ni-Cr user group. It is suggested that samples with relatively high creatinine and/or 8-OHdG levels are further studied in more detail for stability of concentrations and for the effect of contributing factors.Whether near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a convenient and accurate method of determining first and second ventilatory thresholds (VT1 and VT2) using raw data remains unknown. This study investigated the reliability and validity of VT1 and VT2 determined by NIRS skeletal muscle hemodynamic raw data via a polynomial regression model. A total of 100 male students were recruited and performed maximal cycling exercises while their cardiopulmonary and NIRS muscle hemodynamic data were measured. The criterion validity of VT1VET and VT2VET were determined using a traditional V-slope and ventilatory efficiency. Statistical significance was set at α = . 05. There was high reproducibility of VT1NIRS and VT2NIRS determined by a NIRS polynomial regression model during exercise (VT1NIRS, r = 0.94; VT2NIRS, r = 0.93). There were high correlations of VT1VET vs VT1NIRS (r = 0.93, p less then .05) and VT2VET vs VT2NIRS (r = 0.94, p less then .05). The oxygen consumption (VO2) between VT1VET and VT1NIRS or VT2VET and VT2NIRS was not significantly different. Skeletal muscle raw oxygenation and deoxygenation status reflects more realistic causes and timing of VT1 and VT2.To estimate and compare the incidence of thromboembolic disease among patients who are clinically suspected for VTE among high and low altitude dwellers in Saudi Arabia. A prospective study conducted over two years (2011-2013) conducted in two different geographical areas in Saudi Arabia; Abha City and Riyadh City. Patients clinically suspected with deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism was recruited to the study. A detailed social, medical and laboratory investigations were taken from all patients including lifestyle, occupation and smoking. A total of 234 patients participated in the study. There were 146 (62.4%) females and 88 (37.6%) males. Mean age was 51.7 years. A 56.8% incidence of DVT was seen among high altitude dwellers compared to 13.0% among low altitude dwellers. Also, a 12.6% incidence of PE was documented among high altitude dwellers, compared to 4.1% of the low altitude dwellers. VTE was significantly more among high altitude dwellers (81.9%) compared to low altitude dwellers (21.9%). Mean WBC count was significantly higher among the high altitude dwellers (10.8 ± 9.7 vs. 8.2 ± 3.4, p = 0.043). Mean platelet count was significantly higher among the high altitude dwellers compared to the low altitude dwellers (327.4 ± 162.4 vs. 212.0 ± 158.9, p = 0.005). The likelihood of developing VTE is greater among people who resided at moderate to high altitude for prolonged periods of time. The changes in the factors for coagulation including platelet counts may not reflect the true status of hypercoagulability especially if patients have stayed longer in high altitudes because of physiological adaptation to the environment.Women's health is affected by breast cancer worldwide and Saudi Arabia (SA) is no exception. Malignancy has enormous consequences for social, psychological and public health. The aim of this study was to examine the risk factors for Saudi women from breast cancer using logistic regression models. In 135 patient cases for different stages of breast cancer was used to study case management, 270 healthy women from King Abd Alla Medical City, Mecca, SA were taken to predict the probability of women developing breast cancer, logistic regression was analyzed taking factors such as age, marital status, family history, parity, age at first full-term pregnancy, menopausal status, body mass index (BMI) and breast feeding. The logistic regression model showed that there are important risk factors (age, marital status, family history, parity, age at first full-term pregnancy, menopausal status, body mass index, and breast feeding) in development of breast cancer. Fewer cases were observed in unmarried women, age ≤30, BMI ≤20. In contrast, more cases were found with women age 41-50 married, BMI > 30, a smaller number of children, not breast feeding, age of first pregnancy ≥30, menopausal status age at 46-50. Based on our data there is role of risk factors in developing breast cancer, less BMI, the increase number of children, breast feeding, which are playing as protective factor for breast cancer.Plant ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs) are N-glycosidases which inhibit protein synthesis through depurination of the ribosomal RNA sequence. Type II RIPs are heterodimer proteins which can bind to cell surfaces. The cytotoxicity of these RIPs is different. Sambucus spp. are a rich source of RIP proteins with different properties. In the present study, a type II RIP was isolated from S. ebulus plant that grows widely in the north of Iran, and different bioinformatics tools were used for the evaluation of physicochemical, functional and 3D protein characteristics. The results showed significant differences among isolated RIP and other Sambucus RIP proteins. The study of these differences can not only expand our insight into the functioning mechanisms of plant RIPs but also provide information about a novel RIP protein with potential biological applications.Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a foodborne bacterial pathogen that may cause gastroenteritis in humans through the consumption of seafood contaminated with this microorganism. The emergence of antimicrobial and multidrug-resistant bacteria is another serious public health threat worldwide. In this study, the prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility test of V. parahaemolyticus in blood clams, shrimps, surf clams, and squids were determined. The overall prevalence of V. parahaemolyticus in seafood was 85.71% (120/140), consisting of 91.43% (32/35) in blood clam, 88.57% (31/35) in shrimps, 82.86% (29/35) in surf clams, and 80% (28/35) in squids. The majority of V. parahaemolyticus isolates from the seafood samples were found to be susceptible to most antibiotics except ampicillin, cefazolin, and penicillin. The MAR indices of V. parahaemolyticus isolates ranged from 0.04 to 0.71 and about 90.83% of isolates were found resistant to more than one antibiotic. selleck inhibitor The high prevalence of V. parahaemolyticus in seafood and multidrug-resistant isolates detected in this study could pose a potential risk to human health and hence appropriate control methods should be in place to minimize the potential contamination and prevent the emergence of antibiotic resistance.
