The main objective of this project was to develop a standardized finger kinematic measurement system employing electromagnetic (EM) tracking to measure in vivo finger motion pathways. A landmark digitization protocol was developed and used in vivo, in a biomechanical study using EM trackers secured to the finger segments. In vivo results for finger flexion/extension showed no significant differences between EM and goniometer results, 5°±3°; p = 0.735.Oncolytic virotherapy has currently emerged as a powerful therapeutic approach in cancer treatment. Although the history of using viruses goes back to the early 20th century, the approval of talimogene laherparepvec (T-VEC) in 2015 increased interest in oncolytic viruses (OVs). OVs are multifaceted biotherapeutic agents because they replicate in and kill tumor cells and augment immune responses by releasing immunostimulatory molecules from lysed cells. Despite promising results, some limitations hinder the efficacy of oncolytic virotherapy. The delivery challenges and the upregulation of checkpoints following oncolytic virotherapy also mediate resistance to OVs by diminishing immune responses. Furthermore, the localization of receptors of viruses in the tight junctions, interferon responses, and the aberrant expression of genes involved in the cell cycle of the virus, including their infection and replication, reduce the efficacy of OVs. In this review, we present different mechanisms of resistance to OVs and strategies to overcome them.Microencapsulation of formulation designs further expands the field and offers the potential for use in developing bioartificial organs via cell encapsulation. Combining formulation design and encapsulation requires ideal excipients to be determined. In terms of cell encapsulation, an environment which allows growth and functionality is paramount to ensuring cell survival and incorporation into a bioartificial organ. Selleckchem Panobinostat Hence, excipients are examined for both individual properties and benefits, and compatibility with encapsulated active materials. Polymers are commonly used in microencapsulation, offering protection from the immune system. Bile acids are emerging as a tool to enhance delivery, both biologically and pharmaceutically. Therefore, this review will focus on bile acids and polymers in formulation design via microencapsulation, in the field of bioartificial organ development.Aim To determine the rate, repartition and risk factors of lymph node (LN) metastasis in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer. Methods We reviewed retrospectively the pathological and clinical data of 184 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer at a tertiary care center in Beirut, Lebanon. Results 88% of patients received a pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy. 70% of patients presented LN metastases at both pelvic and para-aortic levels, while isolated pelvic or para-aortic LN metastases were seen in 16 and 14% of cases, respectively. link2 In a univariate analysis, the rate of positive LNs was higher in patients with serous histology (65 vs 33%; p less then 0.001), high-grade tumors (68 vs 26%; p less then 0.001), bilateral adnexal involvement (74 vs 27%; p less then 0.001), advanced clinical stage (p less then 0.001), interval debulking surgery (63.2 vs 36.8%; p = 0.003) and positive peritoneal cytology (79 vs 26%; p less then 0.001). In a multivariate analysis, the rate of LN involvement was significantly higher in patients with higher grade, advanced clinical stage and positive peritoneal cytology. Conclusion Serous histology, grade 3 tumors, positive peritoneal cytology, advanced clinical stage, interval surgery and bilateral adnexal involvement can predict LN metastasis in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer.As part of an annual wellness evaluation, we performed oral and dental examination under general anesthesia in 7 zoo Bolivian squirrel monkeys aged 10 and 15 years, and 8 zoo black-tufted marmosets aged between 1 and 7 years. No oral discomfort was observed in any animal prior to the procedure. Apart from dilacerated roots of second mandibular incisor teeth in Bolivian squirrel monkeys and one case of presumably odontodysplasia in a black-tufted marmoset, no major variations in number and shape of the present teeth and roots were revealed. All 15 animals had gingivitis, but periodontitis was only diagnosed in 3 black-tufted marmosets. Most commonly diagnosed dental pathology in Bolivian squirrel monkeys was attrition/abrasion, affecting 11.9% of all teeth, followed by caries, which was only diagnosed in older animals. Altogether 8 fractured teeth were diagnosed in Bolivian squirrel monkeys only, with root fracture being the most common type, followed by complicated crown fracture and complicated crown-root fracture. Radiographic signs of endodontic disease were found in 10 teeth in Bolivian squirrel monkeys and in one nonvital tooth with intact crown in a black-tufted marmoset. We associated high occurrence of caries in the older Bolivian squirrel monkeys with their diet and saliva characteristics of these animals. Lack of any periodontitis in Bolivian squirrel monkeys may partially be attributed to limitations of radiography technique, although squirrel monkeys appear to be far less susceptible to naturally occurring periodontitis than marmosets.The combination of oral anticoagulants with platelet inhibitors has been widely investigated in patients with coronary stenting and concomitant atrial fibrillation. In these patients, default therapy after percutaneous coronary intervention in acute coronary syndrome is clopidogrel plus non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant, omitting aspirin. However, in view of the high thromboembolic risk associated with acute coronary syndrome and the number of poor metabolizers for clopidogrel, investigation of alternative P2Y12-inhibitors is mandatory. This prospective, multicenter, open-label, registry-based, randomized, controlled trial aims to show the non-inferiority of dabigatran plus ticagrelor versus dabigatran plus clopidogrel in patients on chronic anticoagulants who undergo percutaneous coronary intervention in acute coronary syndrome. The primary end point is major bleeding as defined by the Bleeding Academic Research Consortium bleeding definition. Trial registration number NL75644.096.21.Sexual assault is prevalent and may be even more prevalent among sexual minorities. However, prevalence rates vary, in part, due to discrepancies in sampling methods. Given this, we assessed whether two popular non-probability sampling types (panel quota vs. social media recruitment) produced different sexual assault prevalence rates when holding all other methodological choices (definitions, measures, scoring) constant in a sample of lesbian, bisexual, queer, and heterosexual adults, excluding cisgender men. Two phases of data collection occurred-a panel quota sample (n = 1366), recruited from an online sample aggregator, and social media sample (n = 1102), recruited through lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) social media sites. Participants were asked about sexual assault and rape experiences in both childhood and adulthood using a modified form of the Sexual Experiences Scale-Short Form Victimization. Both phases used the same definitions of sexual assault, prevalence measures, and prevalence scoring. Overall, the sample recruited via LGBTQ social media yielded statistically higher sexual assault prevalence rates for all four types of victimization experiences measured lifetime sexual assault (LSA), rape-specific LSA, childhood sexual assault (CSA), and adulthood sexual assault. However, when parsing out subgroups, this finding only held for heterosexual participants who had rates > 30% higher in the social media sample compared with the panel quota sample. These findings suggest that researchers studying sexual assault in lesbian, bisexual, or queer adults may be able to use social media sampling techniques, which require less resources, without concern that the sampling technique is inflating prevalence when compared to panels.
Subtotal cholecystectomy (STC) is an alternative to total cholecystectomy (TC) in patients with severe inflammation/adhesions around the hepatocystic triangle. This study aimed to evaluate the safety profile of STC.
We retrospectively reviewed all patients who had STC at our unit between February 2009 and August 2019. STC was divided into two types, reconstituting (R-STC) and fenestrating (F-STC), depending on whether the gall bladder remnant was closed or left open. Patients who had cholecystectomy for gall bladder malignancy or as part of another operation were excluded from the study.
A total of 5,664 patients underwent cholecystectomy during the study period. Of these, 97 (1.7%) underwent STC. The laparoscopic to open conversion rate was high at 48.8% (47 cases), as was the overall postoperative complication rate (45.4%, 44 cases). No patient suffered iatrogenic bile duct injury. Nineteen patients (19.6%) suffered postoperative bile leak. This was significantly higher in patients who had STC in the acute setting (41% vs 13% for elective STC cases;
=0.04). There was no significant difference in rate of bile leak or other complications between R-STC and F-STC types. The 90-day readmission rate was 8.2% (8 cases). No mortalities were recorded within 90days post STC.
STC seems to be an effective technique to avoid bile duct injury in difficult cholecystectomy cases. However, the perioperative morbidity associated with STC is relatively high. Surgeons should be aware of the risks of STC and take appropriate steps to minimise them.

Materials & methods A total of 201 consecutive patients who underwent LAAC were enrolled. The EQ-5D-3L questionnaire was employed before and 3 months post-LAAC to study the quality of life. Results Women had a higher score for Anxiety/Depression before implantation. Three months after LAAC, both groups showed a significant improvement in mobility, self-care and usual activities. The female gender had a significant improvement in health state 3 months after implantation than their male counterparts. link3 Conclusion Our data shows an improvement in mobility, self-care, usual activities and the overall health state in all patients after LAAC. This potential improvement, most likely caused by the discontinuation of oral anticoagulants, should be considered an indication for LAAC.
