Plasmid-mediated multidrug resistance in E. coli is becoming increasingly prevalent. Considering this global threat to human health, it is important to understand how plasmid-mediated resistance spreads. From a cohort of 123 patients with recurrent urinary tract infections (RUTI) due to extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL E. coli), only five events with a change of ESBL E. coli strain between RUTI episodes were identified. Their blaCTX-M encoding plasmids were compared within each pair of isolates using optical DNA mapping (ODM) and PCR-based replicon typing. Despite similar blaCTX-M genes and replicon types, ODM detected only one case with identical plasmids in the sequential ESBL E. coli strains, indicating that plasmid transfer could have occurred. For comparison, plasmids from seven patients with the same ESBL E. coli strain reoccurring in both episodes were analyzed. These plasmids (encoding blaCTX-M-3, blaCTX-M-14, and blaCTX-M-15) were unaltered for up to six months between recurrent infections. Thus, transmission of blaCTX-M plasmids appears to be a rare event during the course of RUTI. Despite the limited number (n = 23) of plasmids investigated, similar blaCTX-M-15 plasmids in unrelated isolates from different patients were detected, suggesting that some successful plasmids could be associated with specific strains, or are more easily transmitted.Despite improvement in the prognosis of ANCA-associated vasculitides (AAVs), increased mortality, mainly from a cardiovascular origin, persists. We aimed to determine the role of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) on the occurrence of major cardiovascular events (MACEs) in AAVs. Patients with AAVs were successively included in a prospective cohort study, which assessed CVRFs (defined by age >50 years in men and >60 years in women, personal history of cardiovascular disease, smoking status, obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and sedentary lifestyle), the use of glucocorticoids and immunosuppressive agents at baseline and during follow-up, and the occurrence of MACEs. One hundred and three patients were included, with a median follow-up time of 3.5 years. In the glucocorticoids and cyclophosphamide adjusted multivariate analysis, the occurrence of MACEs was associated with older age (p = 0.001, OR = 14.71, 95% CI (confidence interval) = 2.98-72.68), cardiovascular history (p = 0.007, OR (odds ratio) = 6.54, 95% CI = 1.66-25.71), sedentary lifestyle (p = 0.011, OR = 4.50, 95% CI = 1.42-14.29), hypertension (p = 0.017, OR = 5.04, 95% CI = 1.33-19.12), and dyslipidemia (p = 0.03, OR = 3.86, 95% CI = 1.14-13.09). The occurrence of MACEs was associated with the number of CVRFs (p less then 0.001), but not with the use of glucocorticoids or cyclophosphamide (p = 0.733 and p = 0.339, respectively). The implementation of a screening and management program for modifiable CVRFs, particularly hypertension, sedentary lifestyle, and dyslipidemia, may be beneficial for AAV patients in order to reduce their cardiovascular risk.In this paper, numerical simulations of the EN 12767 test procedure for a vehicle-lighting pole crash are presented. A representative soil-vehicle-lighting pole model is first developed. The Geo Metro vehicle model is used, and significant attention is given to representing the soil and its interaction with the traffic pole. Soil is represented using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) coupled with finite elements (FEs). A parametric study is carried out to investigate the key factors influencing the outcomes and consequently the estimation of the occupant safety levels during crash scenario described in EN 12767. First, a sensitivity study of lighting pole mesh is conducted As a result, the optimal mesh size is used for further studies regarding physical parameters such as soil properties and friction coefficient in vehicle-pole interfaces. Friction and mesh size are found to have a considerable influence on the acceleration severity index (ASI), theoretical head impact velocity (THIV), post-impact velocity and vehicle behavior during the lighting pole crash scenario.Significant strengthening of concrete structures can be obtained when using adhesively-bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) systems. Challenges related to such strengthening methods are; however, the brittle concrete delamination failure, reduced warning, and the consequent inefficient use of the CFRP. A novel ductile near-surface mounted reinforcement (NSMR) CFRP strengthening system with a high CFRP utilization is introduced in this paper. It is hypothesized that the tailored ductile enclosure wedge (EW) end anchors, in combination with low E-modulus and high elongation adhesive, can provide significant strengthening and ductility control. Five concrete T-beams were strengthened using the novel system with a CFRP rod activation stress of approximately 980 MPa. The beam responses were compared to identical epoxy-bonded NSMR strengthened and un-strengthened beams. The linear elastic response was identical to the epoxy-bonded NSMR strengthened beam. In addition, the average deflection and yielding regimes were improved by 220% and 300% (average values), respectively, with an ultimate capacity comparable to the epoxy-bonded NSMR strengthened beam. Reproducible and predictable strengthening effect seems obtainable, where a good correlation between the results and applied theory was reached. The brittle failure modes were prevented, where concrete compression failure and frontal overload anchor failure were experienced when failure was initiated.

Transcatheter ablation is the standasrd treatment for atrioventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia (AVNRT). However, different techniques are available. Data about the use of irrigated flexible-tip catheters and three-dimensional electroanatomical mapping (3D EAM) for AVNRT ablation are scant. The aim of this study was to evaluate in long-term follow-up efficacy and safety of a novel approach for AVNRT treatment.

This is a cohort single arm study with long-term follow-up. Patients with AVNRT were treated with catheter ablation by means of irrigated flexible-tip catheters combined with 3D EAM.

One-hundred-and-fifty patients were enrolled and followed-up for a median of 38 months (minimum 12, maximum 74). 17-AAG mouse Acute procedural success rate was 96.7% (145/150 patients). During follow-up, 11 patients had arrhythmia recurrences (7.3%). No patient developed atrioventricular conduction block with need for pacemaker implantation (0%). Fourteen patients died during follow-up (9.3%).

Acute procedural success and long-term follow-up show that AVNRT could be safely and effectively treated with irrigated flexible-tip catheters and 3D EAM.

In this study, a kind of Multi-walled carbon nanotubes loaded Alpha-Fe2O3 (CNTs/α-Fe2O3) heterostructure composite is successfully prepared via the one-step method. Due to the synergistic effect in the as-prepared CNTs/α-Fe2O3, the defect sites and oxygen-containing functional groups of CNTs can dramatically improve the interface charge separation efficiency and prevent the aggregation of α-Fe2O3. The improved photocurrent and enhanced hole-electron separation rate in the CNTs/α-Fe2O3 is obtained, and the narrower band gap is measured to be 2.8 ev with intensive visible-light absorption performance. Thus, the CNTs/α-Fe2O3 composite serves as an excellent visible light photocatalyst and exhibits an outstanding photocatalytic activity for the cationic dye degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). This research supplies a fresh application area forα-Fe2O3 photocatalyst and initiates a new approach for design of high efficiency photocatalytic materials. The early detection of cancer favors a greater chance of curative treatment and long-term survival. Exciting new technologies have been developed that can help to catch the disease early. Liquid biopsy is a promising non-invasive tool to detect cancer, even at an early stage, as well as to continuously monitor disease progression and treatment efficacy. Various methods have been implemented to isolate and purify bio-analytes in liquid biopsy specimens. Aptamers are short oligonucleotides consisting of either DNA or RNA that are capable of binding to target molecules with high specificity. Due to their unique properties, they are considered promising recognition ligands for the early detection of cancer by liquid biopsy. A variety of circulating targets have been isolated with high affinity and specificity by facile modification and affinity regulation of the aptamers. In this review, we discuss recent progress in aptamer-mediated liquid biopsy for cancer detection, its associated challenges, and its future potential for clinical applications.Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is an important oilseed crop worldwide, and peanut height has been shown to be closely related to yield, therefore a better understanding of the genetic base of plant height-related traits may allow us to have better control of crop yield. Plant height-related traits are quantitative traits that are genetically controlled by many genes, and distinct quantitive trait loci (QTLs) may be identified for different peanut accessions/genotypes. In the present study, in order to gain a more complete picture of the genetic base for peanut height-related traits, we first make use of the high quality NGS sequence data for 159 peanut accessions that are available within our research groups, to carry out a GWAS study for searching plant height-related regions. We then perform a literature survey and collect QTLs for two plant height-related traits (Ph peanut main stem height, and Fbl the first branch length) from earlier related QTL/GWAS studies in peanut. In total, we find 74 and 21 genomic regions that are, associated with traits Ph and Fbl, respectively. Annotation of these regions found a total of 692 and 229 genes for, respectively, Ph and Fbl, and among those genes, 158 genes are shared. KEGG and GO enrichment analyses of those candidate genes reveal that Ph- and Fbl-associated genes are both enriched in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, some basic processes, pathways, or complexes that are supposed to be crucial for plant development and growth. The three-dimensional (3D) simulation model of a lithium niobate (LiNbO3, LN) optical waveguide (OWG) electric field sensor has been established by using the full-wave electromagnetic simulation software. The influences of the LN substrate and the packaging material on the resonance frequency of the integrated OWG electric field sensor have been simulated and analyzed. The simulation results show that the thickness of the LN substrate has a great influence on the resonant frequency of the sensor (≈33.4%). A sensor with a substrate thickness of 1 mm has been designed, fabricated, and experimentally investigated. Experimental results indicate that the measured resonance frequency is 7.5 GHz, which nearly coincides with the simulation results. Moreover, the sensor can be used for the measurement of the nanosecond electromagnetic impulse (NEMP) in the time domain from 1.29 kV/m to 100.97 kV/m.
