This paper seeks to attend to this research gap by introducing a novel Case Study Evaluation-tool (CaSE). First, issues around knowledge generation and validity are assessed in both EBP and practice-based evidence (PBE) paradigms. Although systematic case studies are more aligned with PBE paradigm, the paper argues for a complimentary, third way approach between the two paradigms and their 'exemplary' methodologies case studies and randomised controlled trials (RCTs). Second, the paper argues that all forms of research can produce 'valid evidence' but the validity itself needs to be assessed against each specific research method and purpose. Existing appraisal tools for qualitative research (JBI, CASP, ETQS) are shown to have limited relevance for the appraisal of systematic case studies through a comparative tool assessment. Third, the paper develops purpose-oriented evaluation criteria for systematic case studies through CaSE Checklist for Essential Components in Systematic Case Studies and CaSE Purpose-based Evaluative Framework for Systematic Case Studies. The checklist approach aids reviewers in assessing the presence or absence of essential case study components (internal validity). The framework approach aims to assess the effectiveness of each case against its set out research objectives and aims (external validity), based on different systematic case study purposes in psychotherapy. Finally, the paper demonstrates the application of the tool with a case example and notes further research trajectories for the development of CaSE tool.Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS) studies of the interaction of polymers or proteins in solution are strongly affected by the viscosity and refractive index of the medium, and the effects are likely to be more significant with the use of short wavelength excitation (e.g., 405 nm diode lasers). Failing to account for these issues can lead to incorrect measurement of average size, conformational changes, and dynamic behaviour of polymers and proteins. Steady-state, time-resolved, and FCS measurements of Alexa 405 in glycerolwater mixtures were performed to determine its suitability for FCS measurements with 405 nm excitation. The effects of the refractive index and viscosity on the diffusion coefficient and photophysical parameters (lifetime and relative quantum yield) of the fluorophore were determined. Alexa 405 lifetime decreased from 3.55 ns in water to 3.25 ns in a 5050 glycerolwater mixture, while its diffusion coefficient dropped from 333 ± 16 to 44 ± 1 µm2s- 1. Lifetime data collected from micromolar solutions of Alexa 405 did however also suggest that as solvent polarity decreased, aggregates (excimers) were formed as evidenced by the appearance of a rising edge in the decay plots. The interdependence between lifetime, refractive index, and diffusion coefficient could be accurately fitted by a simple polynomial function indicating that the probe is well behaved and predictable in the glycerolwater model system. Overall, Alexa 405 is a most promising and reliable probe for FCS measurement using violet laser diode excitation sources.Photoacoustic (PA) imaging has been widely used in biomedical research and preclinical studies during the past two decades. It has also been explored for nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT/E) and for industrial applications. To test this, 32 pet dogs took part in a cross-modal violation of expectancy experiment, during which dogs were shown videos of either a dog and that of an unfamiliar animal, paired with either the sound of a dog barking or of an unfamiliar vocalization. While stimuli were being presented, dogs paid higher attention to the exit region of the presentation area, when the visual stimulus represented a dog than when it represented an unfamiliar species. After exposure to the stimuli, dogs' attention to different parts of the presentation area depended on the specific combination of visual and auditory stimuli. Of relevance, dogs paid less attention to the central part of the presentation area and more to the entrance area after being exposed to the barking and dog video pair, than when either was paired with an unfamiliar stimulus. These results indicate dogs were surprised by the latter pairings, not by the former, and were interested in where the barking and dog pair came from, implying recognition of the two stimuli as belonging to a conspecific. The study represents the first demonstration that dogs can recognize other conspecifics in videos.
