To investigate the effects of exercise on bone remodeling in fluorosis mice, 120 male 3-week-old ICR mice were randomly divided into four groups control group (C), exercise group (E), fluoride group (F), fluoride plus exercise group (F + E). After 8-week physical exercise and/or fluoride exposure, we evaluated the content of fluorine, the histopathological structure and microstructure of femur, bone metabolism biochemical indexes and oxidative stress related parameters, and the mRNA and protein levels of genes in BMP-2/Smads and OPG/RANKL/RANK signaling pathways. Our results showed that 100 mg/L NaF exposure increased the accumulation of fluoride in bone, altered histology of bone, and enhanced the activities of ALP and TRACP. Meanwhile, excessive fluoride induced oxidative stress in bone tissue by increasing the content of ROS and MDA, and decreasing the activities of antioxidant enzymes. In addition, the results of qRT-PCR suggested that NaF significantly increased the mRNA expression of BMP-2, Smad-5, Col IA1, Col IA2, OPG, RANKL and RANK, as well as the elevated proteins of OPG, RANKL and RANK. However, these fluoride-induced changes were alleviated after moderate exercise. Taken together, these findings indicated that moderate exercise decreased the toxicity of fluoride by reducing the accumulation of fluorine in the body to relieve the bone damage caused by fluorosis.

This is a cross-sectional study that was conducted between May and June 2020 and had enrolled 555 Lebanese adolescents. Unplanned emergency department (ED) visits of nursing home residents (NHR) are common, with many transfers not leading to hospitalization. However, there is little research on what diagnostic and therapeutic measures are performed during visits.

We analyzed underlying diagnoses, characteristics and performed medical procedures of unplanned outpatient ED visits by NHR.

We conducted a multi-center study of 14 nursing homes (NHs) in northwestern Germany in 03/2018-07/2019. Hospital transfers were documented by nursing staff using a standardized questionnaire for 12months. In addition, discharge letters were used to collect information about the respective transfer, its reasons and the extend of the medical services performed in the ED.

A total of 161 unplanned ED visits were included (mean age 84.2years; 68.3% females). The main transfer reasons were trauma (59.0%), urinary catheter and nutritional probe problems (overall 10.6%; male NHR 25.5%) and altered mental state (9.9%). 32.9% where discharged without imaging or blood test prior. 67.4% of injured NHR (n = 95) required no or only basic wound care. Catheter-related problems (n = 17) were mainly treated by changing an existing suprapubic catheter (35.3%) and by flushing the pre-existing catheter (29.4%).

Our data suggest that the diagnostic and therapeutic interventions performed in ED, often do not exceed general practitioner (GP) care and many ED visits seem to be unnecessary.

Comorbidities have major implications for the care of people with dementia.

To investigate the patterns of comorbidities in dementia in the last five years of life and how these patterns differed between three cohorts.

The study included people who died at age 70 and above in 2001 (n = 13,717), 2007 (n = 34,750) and 2013 (n = 38,087) in Finland. ICD-10 morbidity data for a five-year period prior to death were extracted from national registers. Principal component analysis was employed to identify patterns for several morbidities. The associations of principal component scores with dementia were analysed using binary logistic regression. Linear regression was used to examine changes in the number of morbidities in patterns over time.

The morbidity patterns identified in the last years of life were (1) cardiometabolic disorders, (2) neurological, (3) cerebrovascular diseases and (4) musculoskeletal, thyroid and psychiatric disorders. Among the patterns, neurological and musculoskeletal, thyroid and psychiatric disorders were associated with dementia. The number of diagnoses in the cerebrovascular pattern increased and those in the musculoskeletal, thyroid and psychiatric pattern decreased over time.

Comorbidity patterns identified in this nationwide register study are largely in line with previous evidence. Time difference in these patterns provide crucial information for service planning.

To better characterize the immuno-modulatory impact of early HPV infections, we measured changes in a panel of 20 cytokines in cervicovaginal samples collected from young women who were tested for HPV and self-reported for genital inflammation and infection symptoms. The aim of this study is to investigate the suitability of a blended scaffold containing human platelet lysate (HPL) and fibrin not only for cultivating human corneal endothelial cells (HCECs) but also for serving as a scaffold for the respected cells. We isolated HCECs from human donors and encapsulated the cells with three concentrations of HPL/Fibrin scaffold, namely HPL/Fibrin 1, HPL/Fibrin 2 and HPL/Fibrin 3, by adding 28.9, 57.8 and 86.7 mg/dl of fibrinogen to HPL to obtain a final percentage of 10, 20 and 30 % of fibrinogen, respectively. SEM imaging and swelling test were done to characterize the scaffolds. Cell viability assay and cell counting were performed on the cells. HCECs were characterized by morphology and immunocytochemistry. SEM imaging on freeze-dried scaffolds showed higher porosity of HPL/Fibrin 1 and HPL/Fibrin 2 than HPL/Fibrin 3, but larger pores were observed only in HPL/Fibrin 1. Cellular attachment and morphology on HPL/Fibrin 1 were appropriate by SEM imaging. A higher swelling rate was observed in HPL/Fibrin 1. After 3 and 5 days, higher numbers of cells were observed specifically in HPL/Fibrin 1. A higher expression of Na+/K+-ATPase, ZO-1 and vimentin proteins was detected in the HPL/Fibrin 1-cultured HCECs as compared with control (no scaffold). HPL/Fibrin can be used as a suitable scaffold for HCECs while preserving the cells viability. Local and systemic pathologies have been associated with alterations in endothelial function. However, targeting the endothelium with vasoconstrictor or vasodilator drugs is often accompanied by systemic effects. Here, we evaluated a liposome-microbubble delivery system as a vascular hydrophilic agonist carrier. Phenylephrine (Phe) or acetylcholine (Ach)-loaded liposomes were conjugated to microbubbles. The drug release was triggered by ultrasound (US), and the vascular response was assessed in rat aortic rings using an isolated organ chamber. Aortic rings incubated with Phe-liposome-microbubble conjugate, exposed to US showed a marked contractile response (0.79 ± 0.04 g) compared to empty liposomes conjugated to microbubbles, aortic rings exposed only to US, and Phe-liposome-microbubble conjugate without US exposure that elicited a minimal or no response. Expressed as %, contractile responses were 85.24 ± 4.31% and 12.62 ± 3.23% for Phe-Chol-liposome-microbubble conjugate and empty Chol-liposome-microbubble conjugate exposed to US, respectively. Addition of 1 × 10-5 M Ach to pre-contracted aortic rings decreased the contraction response from 1 to 0.21 g. The addition of Ach-liposome conjugate and exposure to US decreased the contraction response to 0.32 g. Additionally, the ED50 values for Phe and Ach released by US from liposome-microbubble conjugates were 3.6 × 10-8 M ± 2.8 × 10-9 M for Phe and 2.0 × 10-8 M ± 1.8 × 10-9 M. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was defined as a species of beta coronavirus causing atypical respiratory disease in humans. The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented health and economic crisis worldwide. Little is known about the specifics of its influence on people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) (PLWHA). In this study, we aim to investigate the prevalence and mortality in PLWHA co-infected with COVID-19.

The databases PUBMED, EMBASE, BioRxiv, and medRxiv were searched up to 9 March 2021 to explore the prevalence and mortality rate of COVID-19 in PLWHA. Cohort studies and case series meeting the inclusion criteria were included in this review.
