It helps to control the formation of histamine and other BAs, and also reduce histamine and tyramine toxicity by applying basic good handling and hygiene practices. A greater understanding of BAs is essential to enhance food safety and quality. This review paper discusses the public health concerns of BAs in foods.Tentorial margin arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) at the cerebello-mesencephalic fissure are deep lesions, which can be safely resected via a lateral supracerebellar infratentorial approach. This video illustrates the case of a patient who presented with hemorrhage from a tentorial AVM. He was managed in the hybrid neurovascular operating room with Onyx (Medtronic) embolization of a superior cerebellar artery feeder followed by resection of the AVM, which included cerebellar relaxation from lumbar cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage and lateral positioning. Wide cisternal arachnoid dissection at the quadrigeminal cistern allowed for a straight trajectory to the AVM without fixed retraction. Intraoperative transradial angiography confirmed complete AVM exclusion. This video was deemed Institutional Review Board (IRB) exempt by the University of Pennsylvania IRB as it is considered a case report, which does not require IRB approval or patient consent.  The patient consented to the procedure.

Solanesol is an important pharmaceutical intermediate raw material, mainly used to synthesize coenzyme Q10, vitamin K2. It can be found prominent in potato stems and leaves. But now potato stems and leaves are always abandoned or discarded as they are not suitable for use as feed in aquaculture or other purposes. These agricultural waste resources can be reutilized as the corresponding extracts.

To develop a simple and standardized method for the detection of total solanesol in potato leaves and its extracts.

N-hexane was chosen as the extraction solvent for three times in the solanesol extraction from potato leaves. HPLC-MS was used for the detection.

The LOQ was 0.3 µg/g and the linear range was from 0.1  to 50 µg/mL. The precision and stability were evaluated by the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of three samples (potato leaves, Extract-1, Extract-2) for interday and intraday. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by the recoveries of three different spiked concentrations of solanesol for three samples, and results showed it ranged from 80.7% to 99.0% with RSDs less than 8.7%.

The method we established can provide a simple and standardized way for the extraction and detection of total solanesol.

The work laid a foundation for the resource reutilization of potato stem and leaf.

We introduce Medical evidence Dependency (MD)-informed attention, a novel neuro-symbolic model for understanding free-text clinical trial publications with generalizability and interpretability.

We trained one head in the multi-head self-attention model to attend to the Medical evidence Ddependency (MD) and to pass linguistic and domain knowledge on to later layers (MDinformed). This MD-informed attention model was integrated into BioBERT and tested on 2 public machine reading comprehension benchmarks for clinical trial publications Evidence Inference 2.0 and PubMedQA. We also curated a small set of recently published articles reporting randomized controlled trials on COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) following the Evidence Inference 2.0 guidelines to evaluate the model's robustness to unseen data.

The integration of MD-informed attention head improves BioBERT substantially in both benchmark tasks-as large as an increase of +30% in the F1 score-and achieves the new state-of-the-art performance on the Evidence Inference 2.0. It achieves 84% and 82% in overall accuracy and F1 score, respectively, on the unseen COVID-19 data.

MD-informed attention empowers neural reading comprehension models with interpretability and generalizability via reusable domain knowledge. Its compositionality can benefit any transformer-based architecture for machine reading comprehension of free-text medical evidence.

A combined lung and liver transplant in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) is an uncommon procedure. The goal of this study was to compare long-term outcomes between patients with CF who underwent either a combined lung-liver or a lung-only transplant.

This is a retrospective single-centre study of patients with CF who underwent a lung transplant between January 2005 and May 2020. Since 2006, our preference for a combined lung-liver transplant was to transplant the liver first and then the lung. Outcomes were compared using the Kaplan-Meier analysis and the log-rank test. Median follow-up was 53 (23-97) months.

During the study period, among 357 patients with CF who underwent a lung transplant, 14 (4%) required a lung-liver transplant whereas 343 (96%) had a lung-only transplant. Lung cold ischaemic time was longer in the lung-liver transplant group, but no patient in this group showed primary graft dysfunction at 72 h after the transplant. Prevalence of anti-human leucocyte antigen donor-specific antibodies was 7.1% vs 13.7% in the lung-liver versus the lung-only transplant group (P = 0.42). At 5 years, lung graft survival (78% vs 69%) and freedom from chronic lung allograft dysfunction (79% vs 62%) did not differ between the lung-liver versus the lung-only groups (P = 0.45 and P = 0.55, respectively). Freedom from lung biopsy-confirmed rejection was significantly higher in patients undergoing a lung-liver transplant (91% vs 50%; P = 0.027).

A lung-liver transplant did not impair lung graft function. The lower prevalence of donor-specific antibodies and the better freedom from lung biopsy-confirmed rejection suggest tolerogenic effects of the liver graft.

As endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery (EESBS) for sellar pathology has become routine, there is increasing awareness of quality-of-life (QOL) outcomes related to this approach. Similarly, there is a growing interest in postoperative chemosensory function, with notable emphasis on olfaction and the corresponding psychosocial implications of olfactory dysfunction. Meanwhile, there has been minimal direct investigation into gustatory outcomes, and the association between these 2 chemosensory functions remains poorly understood.

To investigate patient-reported chemosensory function and rhinologic-specific QOL following EESBS for routine sellar pathologies.

Comprehensive clinical characteristics and sinonasal QOL assessments, measured using Anterior Skull Base Nasal Inventory-12 (ASK Nasal-12), were collected from 46 patients undergoing EESBS for sellar pathology.

Forty-six patients were included 65.2% female, average age 52.8 yr (range 27-89). The most common pathology was nonfunctioning pituitary adger lasting perturbations in subjective olfaction and gustation. Given the increasing use of the endoscopic endonasal corridor, further investigation in postoperative chemosensory function is essential.Macrolide antibiotics are categorized by the WHO as Highest Priority, Critically Important Antimicrobials due to their recommendation as treatment for severe cases of campylobacteriosis in humans; a self-limiting, rarely life-threatening, zoonotic foodborne infection. Low rates of macrolide resistance in Campylobacter jejuni and the availability of alternative treatments have prompted some regulatory schemes to assign macrolides to a lower importance category. Apart from rare, specific infections, macrolides largely play a supportive role to other drug classes in human medicine. By contrast, although the advent of alternative control methods has seen significant reductions in macrolide use in intensive livestock, they still have a crucial role in the treatment/control of respiratory infections and liver abscesses in cattle. Whilst acknowledging that ongoing surveillance is required to reduce the spread of recently emerged, transferable macrolide resistance among Campylobacter, this article recommends that macrolides should be moved to the WHO Highly Important category.

Although hormonally-derived female sex pheromones have been well described in approximately a dozen species of teleost fish, only a few male sex pheromones have been characterized and the neuroendocrine underpinnings of behavioral responsiveness to them is not understood. Herein, we describe a study that addresses this question using the goldfish, Carassius auratus, an important model species of how hormones drive behavior in egg-laying teleost fishes. Our study had four components. First, we examined behavioral responsiveness of female goldfish and found that when injected with PGF2α, a treatment that drives female sexual receptivity, they became strongly and uniquely attracted to the odor of conspecific mature males, while non-PGF2α-treated goldfish did not discern males from females. Next, we characterized the complexity and specificity of the male pheromone by examining the responsiveness of PGF2α-treated females to the odor of either mature male conspecifics or male common carp odor, as well as their nly unattractive female conspecific water. Uprosertib price Lastly, in a test of whether nonhormonal conspecific odor might determine species-specificity, we added AD to water of 3 species of fish and found that while AD made goldfish water strongly attractive, its effects on other species holding water were small. We conclude that circulating PGF2α produced at the time of ovulation induces behavioral sensitivity to a male sex pheromone in female goldfish and that this male pheromone is comprised of AD and a mixture of polar body metabolites. Because PGF2α commonly mediates ovulation and female sexual behavior in egg-laying fishes, and AD is universally produced by male fishes as a precursor to testosterone, we suggest that these two hormones may have similar roles mediating male-female behavior and communication in many species of fish.

People with autoimmune or inflammatory conditions taking immunomodulatory/suppressive medications may have higher risk of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Chronic disease care has also changed for many patients, with uncertain downstream consequences.

We included participants with autoimmune or inflammatory conditions followed by specialists at Johns Hopkins. Participants completed periodic surveys querying comorbidities, disease-modifying medications, exposures, COVID-19 testing and outcomes, social behaviors, and disruptions to healthcare. We assessed whether COVID-19 risk is higher among those on immunomodulating or suppressive agents and characterized pandemic-associated changes to care and mental health.

265 (5.6%) developed COVID-19 over 9 months of follow-up (April-December 2020). Patient characteristics (age, race, comorbidity, medications) were associated with differences in social distancing behaviors during the pandemic. Glucocorticoid exposure was associated with higher odds of COVID-19 in models incorporating behavior and other potential confounders (OR 1.
