Most likely, the observed results are connected with the gradual release of Ag+ from the surface of the nanoparticles, which, once applied, are internalized in cells and become a long-lasting, stable source of Ag+ ions. Thus, a single exposure to AgNPs may have the effects of chronic exposure and lead to structural damage and dysfunction of the gonads of B. polychresta.Ozone (O3) exposure not only causes lung injury and lung inflammation but also changes blood composition. Previous studies have mainly focused on inflammatory processes and metabolic diseases caused by acute or chronic ozone exposure. However, the effect of ozone on lipid expression profiles remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the lipidomic changes in lung tissue and serum of rats after ozone exposure for three months and explore the lipid metabolic pathway involved in an ozone-induced injury. Based on the non-targeted lipidomic analysis platform of the UPLC Orbitrap mass spectrometry system, we found that sub-chronic exposure to ozone significantly changed the characteristics of lipid metabolism in lungs and serum of rats. First, the variation in sphingomyelin (SM) and triglyceride (TG) levels in the lung and serum after O3 exposure are shown. SM decreased in both tissues, while TG decreased in the lungs and increased in the serum. Further, the effect of ozone on glycerophospholipids in the lung and serum was completely different. Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylserine (PS), and phosphatidylinositol (PI) were the major glycerophospholipids whose levels were altered in the lung, while phosphatidylglycerol (PG), phosphatidic acid (PA), and phosphatidylcholine (PC) levels changed dramatically in the serum. Third, after O3 exposure, the level of monogalactosyldiacylglycerol (MGDG), mainly MGDG (43, 11), a saccharolipid, declined significantly and uniquely in the serum. These results suggested that sub-chronic O3 exposure may play a role in the development of several diseases through perturbation of lipidomic profiles in the lungs and blood. In addition, changes in the lipids of the lung and blood may induce or exacerbate respiratory diseases. In this study, effects of two quorum sensing (QS) enhancement methods on the performance and biofilm of biofilters treating chlorobenzene were investigated. Three biofilters were set up with BF1 as a control, BF2 added exogenous N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) and BF3 inoculated AHLs-producing bacterium identified as Acinetobacter. The average chlorobenzene elimination capacities were 73 and 77 g/m3/h for BF2 and BF3 respectively, which were significantly higher than 50 g/m3/h for BF1. The wet biomass of BF2 and BF3 with QS enhancement eventually increased to 60 and 39 kg/m3 respectively, and it was 29 kg/m3 for BF1. Analysis on biofilms in three biofilters showed that distribution uniformity, extracellular polymeric substances production, adhesive strengths, viability, and metabolic capacity of biofilms were all prompted by the two QS enhancement methods. Comparisons between the two QS enhancement methods showed that adding exogenous AHLs had more significant enhancing effect on biofilm due to its higher AHLs level in start-up period, while AHLs-producing bacteria had an advantage in enhancing bacterial community diversity. These results demonstrate that QS enhancement methods have the potential to optimize the biofilm and thus improve the performance of biofilters treating recalcitrant VOCs.The influence of ionic strength up to 3 mol kg-1 (background electrolytes NaCl or CaCl2) on U(VI) sorption onto montmorillonite was investigated as function of pHc in absence and presence of CO2. A multi-method approach combined batch sorption experiments with spectroscopic methods (time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) and in situ attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR)). In the absence of atmospheric carbonate, U(VI) sorption was nearly 99% above pHc 6 in both NaCl and CaCl2 and no significant effect of ionic strength was found. At lower pH, cation exchange was strongly reduced with increasing ionic strength. In the presence of carbonate, U(VI) sorption was reduced above pHc 7.5 in NaCl and pHc 6 in CaCl2 system due to formation of aqueous UO2(CO3)x(2-2x) and Ca2UO2(CO3)3 complexes, respectively, as verified by TRLFS. A significant ionic strength effect was observed due to the formation of Ca2UO2(CO3)3(aq), which strongly decreases U(VI) sorption with increasing ionic strength. The joint analysis of determined sorption data together with literature data (giving a total of 213 experimental data points) allowed to derive a consistent set of surface complexation reactions and constants based on the 2SPNE SC/CE approach, yielding log K≡SSOUO2+0 = 2.42 ± 0.04, log K≡SSOUO2OH0 = -4.49 ± 0.7, and log K≡SSOUO2(OH)32-0 = -20.5 ± 0.4. Ternary uranyl carbonate surface complexes were not required to describe the data. With this reduced set of surface complexes, an improved robust sorption model was obtained covering a broad variety of geochemical settings over wide ranges of ionic strengths and groundwater compositions, which subsequently was validated by an independent original dataset. This model improves the understanding of U(VI) retention by clay minerals and enables now predictive modeling of U(VI) sorption processes in complex clay rich natural environments.Carbonaceous aerosols are major components in PM2.5 of both polluted and clean atmosphere. find more Accurate source apportionment of carbonaceous aerosols may support effective PM2.5 control. Dual-carbon isotope method (14C and 13C) was adopted to identify the contribution of three main air pollution sources biogenic and biomass (fbb), liquid fossil (fliq.fossil) and coal (fcoal). The aerosol samples were collected at three types of sites with distinctly different degree of air pollution urban, rural and regional background. The seasonal variation of source apportionment of the carbonaceous aerosols in urban Beijing was discussed. Modern biogenic and biomass made an absolute dominance of 92.9 ± 0.5% contribution to the carbonaceous aerosols at the background site Mt. Yulong due to long-range transport from Southeast Asia. The three main sources contributed jointly to the atmospheric carbonaceous aerosols at the rural site Wangdu and the urban site Beijing. The biogenic and biomass source was the major contribution in summer (47.0 ± 0.3%) and autumn (49.3 ± 0.3%) of Beijing, while coal source increased from summer (26.8 ± 13.8%) to autumn (34.7 ± 11.5%). Heating significantly increased the coal source to the dominant contribution (47.0 ± 16.9%) in winter of Beijing. Separate day and night time coal contributions were used to evaluate the two origins of coal combustion industrial use vs. residential use. The results of source apportionment for carbonaceous aerosols provide scientific support for the prevention and control of air pollution.Fluoride contamination has become a considerable threat to our society worldwide. Fluoride in drinking water is primarily due to rich fluoride soil, volcanic activity, forage, grasses and grains, and anthropogenic reasons. World Health Organization has regulated the upper limit for fluoride in drinking water to be 1.5 mg/L while different countries have set their standards according to their circumstances. Excess amounts of fluoride ions in drinking water can cause dental fluorosis, skeletal fluorosis, arthritis, bone damage, osteoporosis, muscular damage, fatigue, joint-related problems, and chronicle issues. In extreme conditions, it could adversely damage the heart, arteries, kidney, liver, endocrine glands, neuron system, and several other delicate parts of a living organism, briefed in the present article. Moreover, a comprehensive scenario for the situations in countries like, China, Canada, Mexico, United States, Yemen, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Iran, Turkey, Australia, have been put forward.Since 2014, the Mexican Caribbean beaches have received massive influxes of the brown seaweed Sargassum (S. fluitans III, S. natans I and S. natans VIII), causing serious ecological and economic effects. Concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) were determined over an annual cycle in pelagic Sargassum species from massive influxes into the Mexican Caribbean. The contribution of trace elements, polysaccharides (alginate and fucoidans), and their main functional groups (uronic acids and sulfate) to arsenic content in Sargassum fluitans - the most abundant species in the Sargassum influx - is discussed. Arsenic was recorded in all samples, yielding mean concentrations of 74.2 ± 2.84 mg kg-1. Significant differences were found between species for As, Cu, Fe, and Pb, but not for Cd and Zn; also, S. fluitans showed significant differences in metal content between seasons for all elements, as well as in alginate and uronic acids from fucoidan. The season of the year, copper, iron, uronic acids, and sulfate content in fucoidan were the main variables associated with arsenic accumulation in S. fluitans as evidenced with a Generalized Linear Model. Arsenic content in Sargassum biomass exceeded the maximum allowable level in the rainy season; therefore, the content of this trace element should be carefully monitored for safe usage of Sargassum biomass.Numerous epidemiological studies have investigated the lipid interference effects of legacy PFASs, however, no studies on PFAS alternatives and blood lipids have been published. In this study, we explored the association between Cl-PFESAs, a typical PFASs alternative in China, and blood lipid profiles in 1336 Guangzhou community residents using linear and non-linear regression models. The results showed a deleterious effect of Cl-PFESAs and blood lipids adjusted estimates (β) for TC, TG, LDL-C and HDL-C per natural log unit increase of 62 Cl-PFESA were 0.029 (95% CI 0.020, 0.038), 0.075 (95% CI 0.049, 0.101), 0.035 (95% CI 0.021, 0.049) and -0.071 (95% CI -0.084, -0.058), respectively. The association between Cl-PFESAs and dyslipidemia was also positively significant (P less then 0.05). Furthermore, a non-linear relationship was observed in Cl-PFESAs and serum lipid levels using a restricted cubic splines (RCS) model. In summary, our research suggested a negative impact of Cl-PFESAs on blood lipid patterns and a possible non-linear association.Climate change-induced mortality of trees is a concerning phenomenon for global forest ecosystems. The rapid decay and death of long-lived trees can significantly impact forest dynamics, with effects that transmit through ecological networks, becoming more evident in organisms occupying high trophic levels, such as large and specialized woodpecker species. However, understanding how populations of high trophic level species respond to climate change is still a challenge. In this study it was analyzed 32-year data of social groups of the Magellanic Woodpecker (Campephilus magellanicus) in North Patagonia, a region facing increasingly frequent droughts and increased temperatures. A positive trend in the size of woodpecker social groups as a response to climate-induced tree senescence was tested. A causal structural equation model examining climate- tree senescence- woodpecker relationships was used. Increasing nonlinear trends and positive interannual growth rates (>10%) for tree senescence and group size were found.
