Also, it was observed that hydrophobicity inside the membrane decreases as the oxidation percentage increases. Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

The purpose of this study was to explore experiences of hospitalized patients as they transition insulin pump self-management from home to hospital and the experience of nurses caring for them. Patients are often more knowledgeable about the pump than their nurses, which could lead to undiscovered challenges. Little is known about the hospital experience related to insulin pump therapy from nurses' and patients' perspectives.

A qualitative approach with interpretive descriptive design and purposive sampling was used. Eligible patients were ≥18 years of age, able to read and speak English, and admitted to non-ICU settings ≥20 hours. Eligible nurses cared for at least 1 patient using an insulin pump. Patients and nurses were interviewed separately. CB1954 DNA alkylator chemical Interviews were audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed using a constant comparative method. Coding was performed independently and jointly to reach consensus on emerging themes.

Hospitalized patients and nurses had an array of perceptions highlighting challenges and adaption to "finding the balance" in managing diabetes when patients wore their insulin pumps. There were 4 interrelated themes representing a continuum of trust to lack of trust, control versus lack of control, effective communication to limited communication, and staff knowledge to lack of knowledge.

Results of this study provide valuable insights into the challenges for both patients and nurses. A standardized approach to caring for this population is necessary. These findings can inform the development of nursing education programs and policies aimed at improving their experiences.

The purpose of this study was to examine interpretations of the meaning of health-related decision-making terminology such as quality-of-life and end-of-life among caregivers of adults living with advanced cancer as a basis for improved understanding of caregiver decision support needs. Interviews were conducted with a purposive sub-sample of 10 caregivers of adults diagnosed with advanced cancer who completed a longitudinal, descriptive study (NRO14856) of factors influencing cancer care decisions. Audio transcripts were analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods. Caregivers described interpretations of the meaning and process of decision-making and decision-related distress. Caregivers were uncertain about the meaning of end-of-life-related terminology, and a placed high value on quality-of-life and faith/spirituality in the decision-making process. Improvements in information and decision support interventions are needed to better support caregivers and subsequently patients towards informed cancer care decisions.

The purpose of the study was to examine how gender was related to enrollment and number of sessions attended in the National Diabetes Prevention Program's Lifestyle Change Program (DPP LCP).

To better understand program uptake, a population of those who would be eligible for the LCP was compared to those who enrolled. Estimates of those eligible were computed using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, whereas enrollment and sessions attended were computed using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Diabetes Prevention Recognition Program.

Results revealed that although similar numbers of males and females were eligible for the program, only 39 321 males versus 121 007 females had enrolled in the National DPP LCP by the end of 2017 (odds ratio = 3.20; 95% CI, 3.17-3.24). The gender differences persisted even when stratifying by age or race/ethnicity. In contrast, no significant gender differences were found between the average number of sessions attended for males (14.0) and females (13.8).

Results of the study can help inform efforts to market and tailor programs to appeal more directly to men and other groups that are underrepresented in the National DPP LCP.

The results showed that the oxygen transfer efficiency of the pure oxygen aeration was higher than that of the air aeration. At the low salinities (0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%), the total organic carbon (TOC) removal rates were 71.42%, 72.88% and 76.30%, respectively, much higher than those with air aeration. However, there were no significant differences of TOC removal efficiency between the air aeration and the pure oxygen aeration at high salinities (2.5% and 3.5%). The SMP contents showed a trend of first decline and then increase generally. The content of SMP with pure oxygen aeration was lower than that with air aeration at low salinity, whereas an opposite result was obtained for salinity above 2.5%. Five excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence peaks detected in the SMP with pure oxygen aeration and air aeration were assigned to tryptophan protein-like, tyrosine protein-like and humic acid-like substances. Humic acid-like fluorescence mainly appeared in the SMP with air aeration, which may be due to respiratory failure under air aeration conditions.Three-dimensional (3 D) printing is an effective technology that has shown considerable potential for use in tissue regeneration. Of the many materials that have been proposed for this purpose, poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) 3 D scaffolds have been received significant attention in the bone tissue engineering field due to its advantageous mechanical properties and biocompatibility. In this study, a novel method was developed for tissue-engineered bone that combines PCL 3 D scaffolds with fish collagen (Col) and the osteogenic abalone intestine gastro-intestinal digests (AIGIDs) from Haliotis discus hannai. And then, mouse mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were seeded onto the fabricated scaffolds. After in vitro culturing, the proliferation of the MSCs on the scaffolds, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and the amount of deposited calcium were investigated. The results indicated that the ALP activity and mineralization in PCL/AIGIDs/Col was higher than that of the other scaffolds. In an in vivo experiment, the two fabricated scaffolds were implanted in a rabbit tibia.
