Although researchers investigating psychological contributors to educational inequality have traditionally focused on students, a growing literature highlights the importance of teachers' psychology in shaping disparities in students' educational achievement and attainment. In this review, we discuss recent advances linking teachers' attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs to inequality in students' outcomes. First, we identify specific aspects of teacher psychology that contribute to educational disparities, including teachers' biases, perceptions and expectations of students, beliefs about the nature of ability, and beliefs about group differences. Second, we synthesize mechanisms underlying the effects of teacher psychology on educational inequality, including teachers' disparate assessment of students' work and abilities, interpersonal interaction with students, and psychological impact on students. Implications for future research and interventions are discussed.Gangliosidoses are inherited lysosomal storage disorders caused by reduced or absent activity of either a lysosomal enzyme involved in ganglioside catabolism, or an activator protein required for the proper activity of a ganglioside hydrolase, which results in the intra-lysosomal accumulation of undegraded metabolites. We hereby describe morphological, ultrastructural, biochemical and genetic features of GM2 gangliosidosis in three captive bred wild boar littermates. The piglets were kept in a partially-free range farm and presented progressive neurological signs, starting at 6 months of age. Animals were euthanized at approximately one year of age due to their poor conditions. Neuropathogens were excluded as a possible cause of the signs. Gross examination showed a reduction of cerebral and cerebellar consistency. Central (CNS) and peripheral (PNS) nervous system neurons were enlarged and foamy, with severe and diffuse cytoplasmic vacuolization. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of CNS neurons demonstrated numerous lysosomes, filled by parallel or concentric layers of membranous electron-dense material, defined as membranous cytoplasmic bodies (MCB). Biochemical composition of gangliosides analysis from CNS revealed accumulation of GM2 ganglioside; furthermore, Hex A enzyme activity was less than 1% compared to control animals. These data confirmed the diagnosis of GM2 gangliosidosis. Genetic analysis identified, at a homozygous level, the presence of a missense nucleotide variant c.1495C > T (p Arg499Cys) in the hexosaminidase subunit alpha gene (HEXA), located within the GH20 hexosaminidase superfamily domain of the encoded protein. This specific HEXA variant is known to be pathogenic and associated with Tay-Sachs disease in humans, but has never been identified in other animal species. This is the first report of a HEXA gene associated Tay-Sachs disease in wild boars and provides a comprehensive description of a novel spontaneous animal model for this lysosomal storage disease.Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a frequent clinical condition which affects nearly 1 in 3 women. It is the only anti-osteoporotic therapy that has a proven efficacy regardless of basal level of risk, even in low-risk women for fracture. Following the publication of the WHI results, use of MHT has considerably declined due to safety concerns which raise the question as to whether it might still be used in the prevention of osteoporosis. Over the last years, subsequent re-analyses of the WHI and further trials have challenged the initial conclusions of the WHI. It is now clearer that the individual benefit-risk balance of MHT is dependent on the individual risk profile in each woracture.

Participants filled out a questionnaire and recorded two voice samples (sustained vowel /a/ and reading). For this study, all the participants reported that their native language was Spanish.

Being a female bilingual speaker had a significant effect on Shimmer (%) with a Beta=-0.7. Similar tendency was found on harmonics-to-noise ratio (B=0.2) and cepstral peak prominence smoothed (B=0.2).

This study aimed to assess the efficacy of Kinesio taping on male patients with mutational falsetto undergoing voice therapy.

Double blind, randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial.

Interviews were conducted with thirty seven mutational falsetto patients. Included 32 participants were randomized and divided into two groups. Two were dropped out due to irregular attendance, 30 participants were included in final analysis.

The study group was treated with voice therapy and applications of three different therapeutic Kinesio taping techniques with seven Kinesio tapes four times over two weeks, and the control group was treated with voice therapy, and applied to sham Kinesio taping.

The values of fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, noise-harmonic ratio, maximum phonation time, Voice Handicap Index-10 scores, and Grade-Roughness-Breathiness-Asthenia-Strain Scale scores were recorded at the baseline and after the two weeks.

There were significant differences between the study group and the control group with respect to the values of fundamental frequency (P=0.011), jitter (P=0.041), shimmer (P=0.036), noise-harmonic ratio (P=0.003), maximum phonation time (P ≤ 0.001), Voice Handicap Index-10 scores (P=0.036), and Grade-Roughness-Breathiness-Asthenia-Strain Scale scores (P=0.007; P ≤ 0.021; P=0.022; P=0.002; P=0.021, respectively) at the end of the study.

Critically ill patients often experience coexisting symptoms. Thirst, in particular, appears to be an important symptom, having the highest prevalence, intensity, and induction of distress, and is significantly correlated with other symptoms. However, thirst and dry mouth are not usually assessed or treated.

The aim of the study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of an intervention bundle to relieve thirst and dry mouth.

The present study was a randomised controlled trial in which critically ill patients were allocated to an experimental or control group. The intervention bundles, including vitamin C sprays, peppermint water mouthwash, and a lip moisturiser, were provided to the experimental group for 3days, whereas patients in the control group were exposed to the placebo interventions, including saline sprays, 40°C water mouthwash, and wetting the lips with water.

A total of 61 patients were recruited to the study; 65.6% (n=41) were men, and the average age was 64.2±16.8 years. The average decrease in thirst intensity and oral mucosa situation scores after the interventions was larger in the experimental group patients relative to controls (1.27 and 0.36 vs. 0.19 and 0.1 points, respectively; p<0.05). Being male, scoring highly on the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II scale, not receiving diuretics, and having higher serum sodium levels were potential predictors of thirst and oral dryness.

The interventional bundle used in this study was shown to be a promising approach that can relieve thirst intensity and dry mouth, which are pervasively distressful to critically ill patients.

Similarly, loss of the main estrogen receptor, estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1; also known as ERα), results in male infertility, due in part to indirect deleterious effects on the seminiferous epithelium and spermatogenesis. Effects of steroid hormones are induced primarily through genomic changes induced by hormone-mediated activation of their intracellular receptors and subsequent effects on nuclear gene transcription. However, androgens and estrogens also signal through rapid nonclassical pathways involving actions initiated at the cell membrane. Here we review the data that nonclassical androgen and estrogen signaling pathways support processes essential for male fertility in the testis and reproductive tract. The recent development of transgenic mice lacking nonclassical AR or ESR1 signaling but retaining genomic nuclear signaling has provided a powerful tool to elucidate the function of nonclassical signaling in the overall response to androgens and estrogens.
