Various factors other than fibrosis could affect liver stiffness (LS), measured by two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE). We aimed to clarify the factors affecting LS in local citizens.

We performed a cross-sectional study among local citizens of a health checkup program. Abdominal obesity was defined as waist circumference ≥85 cm for men and ≥90 cm for women. We evaluated the correlation between LS by 2D-SWE (Aplio 500) and waist circumference with linear regression analyses. We selected the following items as variables in the multivariate analysis waist circumference, sex, hypertension, diabetes, diagnostic components of metabolic syndrome, γ-glutamyl transpeptidase, total bilirubin, NAFLD fibrosis score, and an indicator of a fatty liver, evaluated ultrasonographically.

Overall, 345 individuals were included; 318 (181 men and 137 women; age, 63.4 years; waist circumference, 84.0 cm; LS, 5.79 kPa) were analyzed, 128 of whom had abdominal obesity and significantly higher LS than non-abdominally obese individuals. In the multivariate analysis, waist circumference was positively, independently, and significantly correlated with LS only in abdominally obese individuals.

They are considered as a biomarker for dairy intake because fermentation in ruminants yields high amounts of propionate, which is used as the primer for lipogenesis. Recently, we demonstrated endogenous OCFA synthesis from propionate in humans and mice, but how this is affected by microbial colonization is still unexplored. Here, we investigated the effect of increasing microbiota complexity on hepatic lipid metabolism and OCFA levels in different dietary settings. Germ-free (GF), gnotobiotic (SIH, simplified human microbiota) or conventional (CONV) C3H/HeOuJ-mice were fed a CHOW or high-fat diet with inulin (HFI) to induce microbial fermentation. We found that hepatic lipogenesis was increased with increasing microbiota complexity, independently of diet. In contrast, OCFA formation was affected by diet as well as microbiota. On CHOW, hepatic OCFA and intestinal gluconeogenesis decreased with increasing microbiota complexity (GF > SIH > CONV), while cecal propionate showed a negative correlation with hepatic OCFA. On HFI, OCFA levels were highest in SIH and positively correlated with cecal propionate. The propionate content in the CHOW diet was 10 times higher than that of HFI. AtbFinder, which can be applied to any type of non-blood tissue, does not require isolation of pure bacterial cultures. The method uses a novel TGV medium that allows more rapid bacterial growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative monoisolates compared with that achieved with conventional laboratory media, demonstrating overall sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV values of 99.6%, 98.1%, 98.5%, and 99.4%, respectively, after 4 h. For polymicrobial infections, AtbFinder utilized a novel paradigm of the population response to antibiotics, enabling bacterial growth in the form of a mixed microbial community and selecting antibiotics targeting not only the principal pathogen, but also those bacteria that support their growth. TGV medium allowed culturing of a more diverse set of bacteria from polymicrobial biospecimens, compared with that achieved with the standard media, and enabled, within 4 h, accurate selection of the antibiotics that completely eliminated all cultivatable bacteria from clinical samples. In conclusion, the AtbFinder system may be a valuable tool in improving antibiotic selection, and enabling targeted empirical therapy and accurate antibiotic replacement, which is especially important in high-risk patients.To generate advanced properties for the wear resistance and fatigue life of components and allow for an improved, application-oriented development of part specifications, a precisely tailored initial machining or manufacturing process is necessary. In addition, it is important to know how subsequent machining steps or operational loads affect the components' condition. Residual stresses are a meaningful measurand for evaluating the modifications that a machining process induces into the material. The desired modifications should be specified regarding the final state for the required operational behavior. Thus, the stability of the modifications can be considered so that they can be beneficial in service. This investigation is part of fundamental research in the field of the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) "Process Signatures". By applying defined selected loads, the effects on machined surface layers are investigated since machined components are exposed to further loads during use. For this reason, experimental process chains are applied in this work to grind-strengthened specimens as possible application cases and corresponding loads. These experimental process chains consist of defined mechanical and thermal loads, which are applied to the specimens using a thermal and mechanical testing system. Furthermore, it is investigated how these additional loads affect the modifications previously introduced by the grinding process. The influence of the additional loads is evaluated by using radiographic and electron microscopic examinations. It can be observed that the sequence, as well as the type of the applied loads, play a significant role in the development of the modifications.
