Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is traditionally associated with excessive daytime sleepiness. Insomnia is characterized by hyperarousal, and is seen as a predominant feature in a subgroup of patients with OSA. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of comorbid insomnia and sleep apnea (COMISA) in a sleep apnea population and to characterize its features.

This was a chart review of patients who underwent overnight polysomnography (PSG). All patients completed questionnaires with the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and symptoms of insomnia and other sleep-related comorbidities. Patients with OSA on the PSG were included.

A total of 296 patients withOSA were included, of which 80% reported at least 1 major symptom of insomnia 57% reported sleep onset insomnia, 68% sleep maintenance insomnia, and 48% had early morning awakenings. COMISA (OSA plus 2 or more major symptoms of insomnia) was seen in 63%. These patients were more likely to report an abnormal ESS score, gastroesophageal reflux (GER), and restless legs (RL) than those without; no difference was seen in self-reported sleep bruxism. Among the patients with COMISA, 85% reported at least 1 representative symptom of psychophysiological insomnia (PPI); each of the 5 PPI symptoms was present in at least 40% of patients with COMISA.

Insomnia is extremely prevalent in our population of patients with OSA, accompanied by daytime sleepiness and symptoms of PPI, GER, and RL. Further study is needed to determine the interactions between symptoms and OSA treatments in these patients.

However, the plant functional responses to various precipitation regimes remain unclear. Here, greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to determine how maize plant functional traits respond to drought, flooding and rewatering. Drought and flooding hampered photosynthetic capacity, particularly when severe and/or prolonged. Most photosynthetic traits recovered after rewatering, with few compensatory responses. Rewatering often elicited high photosynthetic resilience in plants exposed to severe drought at the end of plant development, with the response strongly depending on the drought severity/duration. The associations of chlorophyll concentrations with photosynthetically functional activities were stronger during post-tasseling than pre-tasseling, implying an involvement of leaf age/senescence in responses to episodic drought and subsequent rewatering. Coordinated changes in chlorophyll content, gas exchange, fluorescence parameters (PSII quantum efficiency and photochemical/non-photochemical radiative energy dissipation) possibly contributed to the enhanced drought resistance and resilience and suggested a possible regulative trade-off. These findings provide fundamental insights into how plants regulate their functional traits to deal with sporadic alterations in precipitation. Breeding and management of plants with high resistance and resilience traits could help crop production under future climate change.

To assess whether the GnRH-agonist or urinary-hCG ovulation triggers affect oocyte competence in a setting entailing vitrified-warmed euploid blastocyst transfer.

Observational study (April 2013-July 2018) including 2104 patients (1015 and 1089 in the GnRH-a and u-hCG group, respectively) collecting ≥1 cumulus-oocyte-complex (COC) and undergoing ICSI with ejaculated sperm, blastocyst culture, trophectoderm biopsy, comprehensive-chromosome-testing, and vitrified-warmed transfers at a private clinic. The primary outcome measure was the euploid-blastocyst-rate per inseminated oocytes. The secondary outcome measure was the maturation-rate per COCs. Also, the live-birth-rate (LBR) per transfer and the cumulative-live-birth-delivery-rate (CLBdR) among completed cycles were investigated. All data were adjusted for confounders.

The generalized-linear-model adjusted for maternal age highlighted no difference in the mean euploid-blastocyst-rate per inseminated oocytes in either group. The LBR per transfer was similar 44% (n=403/915) and 46% (n=280/608) in GnRH-a and hCG, respectively. On the other hand, a difference was reported regarding the CLBdR per oocyte retrieval among completed cycles, with 42% (n=374/898) and 25% (n=258/1034) in the GnRh-a and u-hCG groups, respectively. Nevertheless, this variance was due to a lower maternal age and higher number of inseminated oocytes in the GnRH-a group, and not imputable to the ovulation trigger itself (multivariate-OR=1.3, 95%CI 0.9-1.6, adjusted p-value=0.1).

GnRH-a trigger is a valid alternative to u-hCG in freeze-all cycles, not only for patients at high risk for OHSS. Such strategy might increase the safety and flexibility of controlled-ovarian-stimulation with no impact on oocyte competence and IVF efficacy.

However, until now few studies have paid attention to the effect of heavy metals on insect reproductive behaviors. In our study, the courtship behaviors, mating behaviors and fecundity of beet armyworm Spodoptera exigua (Lepidoptera Noctuidae) exposed to different concentrations of cadmium in artificial diets at larval stage were studied. The results showed that cadmium stress changed the courtship rhythm by significantly advancing or delaying the courtship starting time. Low dose of cadmium (0.2 mg/kg) increased the courtship frequency in the first two scotophases, but in the fourth phase, the two cadmium treatments reduced the frequency.
