Nonnative plant pests cause billions of dollars in damages. It is critical to prevent or reduce these losses by intervening at various stages of the invasion process, including pathway risk management (to prevent pest arrival), surveillance and eradication (to counter establishment), and management of established pests (to limit damages). Quantifying benefits and costs of these interventions is important to justify and prioritize investments and to inform biosecurity policy. However, approaches for these estimations differ in (1) the assumed relationship between supply, demand, and prices, and (2) the ability to assess different types of direct and indirect costs at invasion stages, for a given arrival or establishment probability. Here we review economic approaches available to estimate benefits and costs of biosecurity interventions to inform the appropriate selection of approaches. In doing so, we complement previous studies and reviews on estimates of damages from invasive species by considering the influence of economic and methodological assumptions. Cost accounting is suitable for rapid decisions, specific impacts, and simple methodological assumptions but fails to account for feedbacks, such as market adjustments, and may overestimate long-term economic impacts. Partial equilibrium models consider changes in consumer and producer surplus due to pest impacts or interventions and can account for feedbacks in affected sectors but require specialized economic models, comprehensive data sets, and estimates of commodity supply and demand curves. More intensive computable general equilibrium models can account for feedbacks across entire economies, including capital and labor, and linkages among these. The two major considerations in choosing an approach are (1) the goals of the analysis (e.g., consideration of a single pest or intervention with a limited range of impacts vs. multiple interventions, pests or sectors), and (2) the resources available for analysis such as knowledge, budget and time. Two new nonenolides named diaportheolides A (1) and B (2) were isolated from the endophytic fungus Diaporthe sp. SXZ-19 of Camptotheca acuminata. The chemical structures of 1 and 2 were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses, including 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments and HR-ESI-MS data analysis. Their in vitro antibacterial activities are established to be insignificant.Superficial mycoses of skin, nails and hair are among the common fungal infections. They are caused by dermatophytes, non-dermatophyte moulds, yeasts and yeast-like fungi. Such fungal infections are widespread all over the world and are predominant in tropical as well as subtropical regions. check details Environmental factors, such as warm, humid and pitiable hygienic conditions, are conducive for their growth and proliferation. Although it does not cause mortality, it is known to be associated with excessive morbidity which may be psychological or physical. This affects the quality of life of the infected individuals which leads to a negative impact on their occupational, emotional and social status. Such infections are increasing on a global scale and, therefore, are of serious concern worldwide. This review article covers the global and Indian scenario of superficial mycoses taking into account the historical background, aetiological agents, prevalence, cultural and environmental factors, risk factors, pathogenesis and hygienic practices for the prevention of superficial mycoses.MECP2 mutations cause Rett syndrome (RTT), a severe and progressive neurodevelopmental disorder mainly affecting females. Although RTT patients exhibit delayed onset of symptoms, several evidences demonstrate that MeCP2 deficiency alters early development of the brain. Indeed, during early maturation, Mecp2 null cortical neurons display widespread transcriptional changes, reduced activity, and defective morphology. It has been proposed that during brain development these elements are linked in a feed-forward cycle where neuronal activity drives transcriptional and morphological changes that further increase network maturity. We hypothesized that the enhancement of neuronal activity during early maturation might prevent the onset of RTT-typical molecular and cellular phenotypes. Accordingly, we show that the enhancement of excitability, obtained by adding to neuronal cultures Ampakine CX546, rescues transcription of several genes, neuronal morphology, and responsiveness to stimuli. Greater effects are achieved in response to earlier treatments. In vivo, short and early administration of CX546 to Mecp2 null mice prolongs lifespan, delays the disease progression, and rescues motor abilities and spatial memory, thus confirming the value for RTT of an early restoration of neuronal activity.
This study aimed to establish whether the increased fetal pulmonary venous pulsatility index (PVPI) in late pregnancy can independently predict small for gestational age (SGA) and to verify its cut point value and efficacy.
The PVPI was measured in women with singleton pregnancies between 25 and 39 gestational weeks. Maternal hypertension and diabetes, estimated fetal weight (EFW) and percentile of the corresponding weeks of pregnancy (USG_PER), gestational weeks at delivery, and birth weight and percentile of the corresponding weeks of pregnancy (BABY_PER) were reviewed. To assess whether PVPI was independently correlated with BABY_PER, Pearson's correlation analysis was performed. The cut point value of PVPI for the prediction of SGA was established using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve.
A total of 129 mothers were included in this study. Both USG_PER and PVPI were significantly related to SGA, independently (P <.001 and P = .004, respectively). The cut point value of PVPI was found to be 1.13. The AUCs of PVPI and USG_PER were not significantly different (P = .624). The sensitivity of PVPI was 70.27%, and the specificity was 92.39%.
PVPI could predict SGA independently, and the efficacy was comparable to EFW during pregnancy.
