multiple conditions, reduced health and affective status, independently from other patients' characteristics. Careful attention about indication, benefit and potential risk should be paid especially to patients on therapy with specific drug classes identified as potentially inappropriate or prone to major DDIs in older persons (e.g., benzodiazepines, NSAIDs, protonic pump inhibitors, antithrombotics/anticoagulants, antidepressants/antipsychotics).

Sexual dimorphism is widespread in insects. The certain specialized structures may be used as weapons in male-male combats or as ornaments to enhance mating opportunities.

We report striking swollen first tarsal segments in two families, four genera and six species of scorpionflies from the Middle Jurassic Yanliao Biota of Northeastern China. Swollen tarsal segments are restricted to male specimens and to hind leg tarsi. The geometric morphometric analyses reveal that the degree of swelling within the orthophlebiid species possessing swollen first metatarsal segments is species-specific, which can be used as a diagnostic character for taxonomic and phylogenetic studies.

The new findings indicate that swollen first metatarsal segments are relatively common in the family Orthophlebiidae during the Middle Jurassic. The tarsal swellings are considered to be sexually dimorphic, potentially associated with sexually display by males and/or camouflage of a "nuptial gift" in the mating process.

Social anxiety is highly prevalent in neurotypical children and children with fragile X syndrome (FXS). FXS is a genetic syndrome that is characterized by intellectual disability and an increased risk for autism spectrum disorder. MLN2238 If social anxiety is left untreated, negative outcomes are highly prevalent later in life. However, early detection of social anxiety is challenging as symptoms are often subtle or absent very early in life. Given the prevalence and impairment associated with childhood social anxiety, efforts have accelerated to identify risk markers of anxiety. A cluster of early features of anxiety have been identified including elevated behavioral inhibition, attentional biases, and physiological dysregulation that index early emerging markers of social anxiety. Infants with FXS provide a unique opportunity to study the earlier predictors of social anxiety. The current study utilized a multi-method approach to investigate early markers of social anxiety in 12-month-old infants with FXS.

Partinfants with FXS show both behavioral and physiological markers of social anxiety at 12 months old using a biobehavioral approach with multiple sources of input. Results highlight the importance of a multi-method approach to understanding the complex early emergent characteristics of anxiety in infants with FXS.

Hormonal and inflammatory mechanisms are involved in the pathogenesis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which is a prevalent metabolic disorder among women of reproductive age. We aimed to evaluate the comparative efficiency of short-term oral administration of Korean red ginseng extract (KRGE) and the standard treatment on PCOS by focusing on the histopathological parameters and serum levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), folliclestimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone, and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB).

A PCOS rat model was established by oral gavage of letrozole (1 mg/kg) for 21 days. The serum levels of LH, FSH, testosterone, and NF-κB were measured, and the morphological features and differences of the ovaries were examined in each group using a light microscope before and after 14 days of treatment with oral regimens-KRGE, oral contraceptives (OCPs), KRGE+OCPs, and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC).

OCPs alone could not normalize the mean ovarian weights of PCOS rats despite the 14-day oral regimen, but they were more effective in reducing the number and size of cysts compared to others. KRGE alone and in combination with OCPs was effective in normalizing abnormal ovarian weights, decreasing LH serum levels, and dissipating the ovarian cysts in PCOS rats. However, when combined with the standard regimen, KRGE showed additional therapeutic effects by efficiently reducing serum testosterone and NF-κB levels.

Our necropsy and histopathological evidence suggests the efficacy of KRGE as a novel integrative medicine against abnormal multiple follicular cysts. However, antiandrogenic and anti-inflammatory effects were only seen in animals that were administered a combination of KRGE and the standard regimen.

Dr. Donald A. Redelmeier, Professor at the University of Toronto and Canada Research Chair in Medical Decision Sciences, served as the keynote speaker with a talk entitled "Pitfalls of Reasoning and Clinical Medicine". In addition, there were five oral and 64 poster presentations. These presentations covered topics ranging from health promotion to neuroimaging. The event celebrated the continuing success and diversity of the LIM program and the training of clinician-scientists at the University of Calgary.

Early phase clinical studies are ongoing to evaluate the role of immune checkpoint inhibitors in adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) despite a paucity of information on the immune microenvironment. This study aims to better characterize the immune microenvironment of ACC tumours and evaluate survival outcomes based on tumour infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression.

Patient characteristics, treatment and outcome data were collected for 24 ACC patients. The CD8+(cluster of differentiation 8) TIL and PD-L1 expression were quantified by immunohistochemistry. Marker expression and survival outcomes were evaluated by Kaplan-Meier analysis.

All cases were negative for PD-L1 expression; four cases had focal high, eight cases had focal moderate and 12 cases had low TIL expression. Based on TIL expression, there was no difference in disease-free or overall survival.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma tumours were found to be associated with a poor immunogenic microenvironment, with absent PD-L1 expression and low CD8+ TILs.
