Superoxide dismutase, ascorbate, and tocopherol were preferentially induced at the early stage of pathogenesis, whereas catalase, glutathione, and the ascorbate-glutathione cycle enzymes were activated later. Systemic leaves retained their net photosynthesis rate and the changes in the antioxidant system were partly like those in the infected leaves, although they occurred later and were less intense. Re-balancing of ascorbate and glutathione in systemic leaves generated a specific redox signature in chloroplasts. We suggest that it could be a regulatory element playing a role in integrating photosynthesis and redox regulation of stress, aimed at increasing the defense capacity and maintaining the growth of the infected plant.The association between serum lipid level and prognosis of breast cancer is controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of serum lipid level in breast cancer recurrence. We analyzed a total of 4190 patients with operable breast cancer who had baseline serum lipid profiles; total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), apolipoprotein A-1, and apolipoprotein B. Recurrence-free survival is defined as the elapsed time from the date of curative surgery to the detection of any recurrence, and recurrence includes locoregional recurrence, distant metastasis, or both local and distant metastasis. Cox-proportional hazard analysis was used to estimate hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for study outcomes comparing the three lowest quartiles of each lipid parameter to the highest quartile adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), and pathologic stage, estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), comorbidities (hypertension, diabetes, or vascular event) at time of breast cancer diagnosis. Patients with dyslipidemia (high bad cholesterol and low good cholesterol level) had worse prognostic factors (i.e., negative hormone receptor status, positive human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) expression, higher nuclear grade). After adjusting for these poor prognostic factors, the patients with dyslipidemia showed good prognosis for breast cancer recurrence. Our study showed that baseline high lipid level could be a good prognostic factor of breast cancer. This study indicates that desirable changes in lipid profile for cardiovascular disease risk are not always beneficial for patients with breast cancer. However, as proper control of lipid level has advantages for cardiovascular disease, these findings require careful interpretation.Diabetic patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) often suffer from poor clinical outcomes such as limb-loss. Fatty acid binding protein 4 (FABP4) is mainly expressed by adipocytes and is known to play a significant role in the development of atherosclerosis. In this study, we sought to investigate whether FABP4 is associated with PAD in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). FABP4 plasma levels were studied in 119 diabetic patients with PAD (DM-PAD) and 49 diabetic patients without PAD (DM-noPAD) presenting to St. Michael's Hospital between October 2017 and September 2018. Levels of FABP4 in DM-PAD patients (23.34 ± 15.27 ng/mL) were found to be over two-fold higher than the levels in DM-noPAD patients (10.3 ± 7.59 ng/mL). Regression analysis demonstrated a significant association between FABP4 levels and DM-PAD after adjusting for age, sex, prior history of coronary arterial disease and white blood cells count (OR, 2.77; 95% CI, 1.81-4.31; p-value = 0.001). Relative to DM-noPAD controls, plasma FABP4 levels in DM-PAD patients were noted to be inversely correlated with the ankle brachial index (ABI; r= -0.374, p-value less then 0.001). The diagnostic ability of FABP4 was investigated using receiver operator curves (ROC) and area under the curve (AUC) analysis. FABP4 had an AUC of 0.79, which improved to 0.86 after adjusting for age, sex and prior history of coronary arterial disease. This raises a possibility of utilizing FABP4 as a biomarker for diagnosing PAD in diabetic patients.Little is known about antibiotic uses at the population level in Syria. The aim of our study is to present outpatient antibiotic dispensing (OAD) patterns and rates for patients with health insurance in the parts of Syria that are controlled by the Syrian government using different indicators. Outpatient data on all dispensed antibiotics for 81,314 adults with health insurance were obtained and stratified according to age, sex, governorate and annual season. OAD was mainly expressed as the number of defined daily doses (DDDs) per 1000 people per day (DID). OAD patterns were assessed according to the anatomical therapeutic classification (ATC) and the Access, Watch and Reserve (AWaRe) classification. OAD was 20.13 DID. Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and clarithromycin were the most dispensed antibiotics (5.76 and 4.4 DID, respectively). Overall, a predominant consumption of broad-spectrum antibiotics was noted. The Watch group of the AWaRe classification had the biggest percentage of OAD (13.26 DID), followed by the Access and the Reserve groups (6.55 and 0.17 DID, respectively). There was a significant difference in OAD between the sex and age groups. The seasonal and regional variations in OAD were also significant. Broad-spectrum antibiotics dispensing was high compared to other studies from different countries. These results are concerning, as they can contribute to antibiotic resistance.Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease of medical and veterinary importance, transmitted through specific freshwater snail intermediate hosts, is targeted for elimination in several endemic regions in sub-Saharan Africa. Multi-disciplinary methods are required for both human and environmental diagnostics to certify schistosomiasis elimination when eventually reached. Molecular xenomonitoring protocols, a DNA-based detection method for screening disease vectors, have been developed and trialed for parasites transmitted by hematophagous insects, such as filarial worms and trypanosomes, yet few have been extensively trialed or proven reliable for the intermediate host snails transmitting schistosomes. Here, previously published universal and Schistosoma-specific internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA primers were adapted into a triplex PCR primer assay that allowed for simple, robust, and rapid detection of Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma bovis in Bulinus snails. We showed this two-step protocol could sensitively detect DNA of a single larval schistosome from experimentally infected snails and demonstrate its functionality for detecting S. haematobium infections in wild-caught snails from Zanzibar. Such surveillance tools are a necessity for succeeding in and certifying the 2030 control and elimination goals set by the World Health Organization.Recent developments in the fabrication of core-shell polymer nanocapsules, as well as their current and future applications, are reported here. Special attention is paid to the newly introduced surfactant-free fabrication method of aqueous dispersions of nanocapsules with hydrophobic liquid cores stabilized by amphiphilic copolymers. Various approaches to the efficient stabilization of such vehicles, tailoring their cores and shells for the fabrication of multifunctional, navigable nanocarriers and/or nanoreactors useful in various fields, are discussed. The emphasis is placed on biomedical applications of polymer nanocapsules, including the delivery of poorly soluble active compounds and contrast agents, as well as their use as theranostic platforms. Other methods of fabrication of polymer-based nanocapsules are briefly presented and compared in the context of their biomedical applications.This study is concerned with the development of a new unidirectional cellular (UniPore) copper structure with multiple concentric pipe layers. The investigated UniPore structures were grouped into three main types, each having a different number of pipes (3, 4, and 5 pipes per transversal cross-section) and different pore arrangements. The specimens were fabricated by explosive compaction to achieve tightly compacted structures with a quasi-constant cross-section along the length of the specimens. The purpose of this analysis was to evaluate the prediction of preeclampsia (PE) and isolated gestational hypertension (GH) for a number of maternal factors, in order to investigate the importance of pre-pregnancy obesity (body mass index, BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2), compared to other risk factors (e.g., prior PE, pregnancy weight gain (GWG), infertility treatment, interpregnancy interval, family history, the lack of vitamin supplementation, urogenital infection, and socioeconomic factors). In total, 912 women without chronic diseases were examined in a Polish prospective cohort of women with a single pregnancy (recruited in 2015-2016). Separate analyses were performed for the women who developed GH (n = 113) vs. 775 women who remained normotensive, as well as for those who developed PE (n = 24) vs. 775 controls. The probability of each disease was assessed for the base predi kg/m2 improved the classification for healthy and sick women the most (NRI = 0.571, p less then 0.001). In the PE prediction, AUC increased most strongly when we added BMI categories (AUC = 0.726, p less then 0.001) to the base model. The highest IDI index was obtained for prior GH/PE (IDI = 0.050, p = 0.080). The addition of BMI categories improved the classification for healthy and sick women the most (NRI = 0.688; p = 0.001). After summing up the results of three indexes, the probability of hypertension in pregnancy was most strongly improved by BMI, including BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 for the GH prediction, and BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 for the PE prediction. Main conclusions Pre-pregnancy BMI was the most likely factor to increase the probability of developing hypertension in pregnancy, compared to other risk factors. Hierarchies of PE and GH risk factors may suggest different (or common) mechanisms of their development.
