MiR-1306-5p was upregulated in testicular tissue of diabetic rats and HG-treated cells. 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD17B7) was a target of miR-1306-5p and HSD17B7 was downregulated in STZ-induced rat tissues and HG-treated cells. HSD17B7 overexpression reversed the increase of C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) and glucose-regulated protein 78 (Grp78) protein levels as well as eIF2α phosphorylation level and promotion of cell apoptosis caused by miR-1306-5p overexpression. Moreover, overexpression of HSD17B7 activated the Janus kinase 2 (JAK2)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) axis in HG-treated cells. In conclusion, quercetin inhibits ER stress and improves testosterone secretion disorder through the miR-1306-5p/HSD17B7 axis in diabetic rats.

Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous environmental bacteria, and some pathogenic species cause lung disease. Environmental factors contribute to increased NTM abundance, with higher potential for exposure and infection.

To identify water-quality constituents that influence the risk of NTM infection in Oregon.

We conducted a population-based cohort study using patient incidence data from the Oregon statewide NTM laboratory data collected as part of a public health surveillance project from 2007 through 2012. To estimate the risk of NTM Pulmonary Infection (PI) from exposure to water constituents, we extracted water-quality data from the Water Quality Portal and associated these data with corresponding patient county of residence. Using generalized linear models, we modeled two outcomes Mycobacterium avium complex species PI and Mycobacterium abscessus group species PI.

For every 1-unit increase in the log concentration of vanadium in surface water, infection risk increased by 49% among persons with Mycobacterium avium complex PI. Among those with Mycobacterium abscessus PI, we observed that for every 1-unit increase in the log concentration of molybdenum in surface water, infection risk increased by 41%. The highest risk of infection due to Mycobacterium abscessus group infection was concentrated in counties within the Northwestern region of Oregon. High infection risk associated with Mycobacterium avium complex species did not show any geographic pattern.

Concentrations of the trace metals molybdenum and vanadium in surface water sources were associated with NTM infection in Oregon. These findings may help identify regions at higher risk of NTM infection to guide risk reduction strategies.

Within the context of a Public Health Emergency (PHE), allocation decisions become significantly more difficult as decisions are often necessary on very short timelines, where relevant information (either evidence or information "on the ground") is changing or incomplete, there is significant potential for harm, and resources are scarce, in unpredictable supply, and likely in high demand. Phosphoramidon An intentional value-based decision-making approach in such circumstances can clarify the values that ought to guide decisions, offering transparency and consistency, among other benefits. We use the example of vaccine allocation during the COVID-19 pandemic to explore value-based decision-making within a PHE context. We describe several core values that are relevant to PHE decision-making and outline their implications for approaches to vaccine allocation. While we focus on vaccine allocation, the values discussed are relevant to other system-level decisions in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Tips for leaders wishing to adopt a value-based approach to decision-making are offered.

This study aims to explore the expectations of physiotherapeutic treatment of long-term side effects (LTSEs) after cancer among patients treated in physiotherapy clinics.

This a qualitative interview study based on a phenomenological approach. Adult patients with LTSEs after cancer were recruited through The Danish Cancer Society and a private physiotherapy clinic in Denmark. Individual semi-structured interviews were carried out using Microsoft Teams based on an interview guide piloted before the interviews. Interviews were audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. Sampling was conducted with a focus on variation in LTSE. The data were analyzed using Malterud's principles of systematic text condensation and coded in NVivo 12.

2 males and 8 females with an average age of 55.8years were interviewed for between 40 and 60minutes from October to November 2020. Four main themes emerged from the interviews

The importance of the physiotherapist's approach,

the benefits of meeting patients with similar symptoms,

the importance of receiving knowledge, and

patients seeking to maintain their current state more often than aiming to improve their condition.

Patients consulting a physiotherapy clinic with LTSE after cancer prefer the physiotherapist to have knowledge about cancer and to be emphatic. Furthermore, patients prefer to meet like-minded people and expect support to maintain their current condition rather than improve their condition.

Investigating gut-lymph in humans is hampered difficulty in accessing the thoracic duct (TD) for lymph sampling. The aims of this study were to develop and pilot a technique of intraoperative TD cannulation with delayed embolization to serially measure TD lymph pressure, flow, and composition (including markers of intestinal injury) during the early postoperative period and in response to enteral feeding and vasopressor treatment. Methods A Seldinger technique was used for percutaneous TD cannulation during an Ivor Lewis esophagogastrectomy. Lymph flow rate and pressure were measured. TD lymph and plasma were sampled at 12 hourly intervals for up to 120 hours after surgery and before TD embolization. Biochemistry, lipids, cytokines, and markers of intestinal injury were measured before and after enteral feeding commenced at 36 hours. However, there have been no attempts to investigate whether nonhuman subjects in fact behave as if physical processes in the virtual and real worlds are continuous. As kea parrots have previously shown the ability to transfer knowledge between real stimuli and both images on paper and images on touchscreens, here we test whether kea behave as naive realists and so expect physical processes to be continuous between the physical and virtual worlds. We find that, unlike infants, kea do not discriminate between these two contexts, and that they do not exhibit a preference for either. Our findings therefore validate the use of virtual stimuli as a powerful tool for testing the cognition of nonhuman animal species. The origin of language is one of the most significant evolutionary milestones of life on Earth, but one of the most persevering scientific unknowns. Two decades ago, game theorists and mathematicians predicted that the first words and grammar emerged as a response to transmission errors and information loss in language's precursor system, however, empirical proof is lacking. Here, we assessed information loss in proto-consonants and proto-vowels in human pre-linguistic ancestors as proxied by orangutan consonant-like and vowel-like calls that compose syllable-like combinations. We played back and re-recorded calls at increasing distances across a structurally complex habitat (i.e. adverse to sound transmission). Consonant-like and vowel-like calls degraded acoustically over distance, but no information loss was detected regarding three distinct classes of information (viz. individual ID, context and population ID). Our results refute prevailing mathematical predictions and herald a turning point in language evolution theory and heuristics. Namely, explaining how the vocal-verbal continuum was crossed in the hominid family will benefit from future mathematical and computational models that, in order to enjoy empirical validity and superior explanatory power, will be informed by great ape behaviour and repertoire.Fundamental frequency (fo), perceived as voice pitch, is the most sexually dimorphic, perceptually salient and intensively studied voice parameter in human nonverbal communication. Thousands of studies have linked human fo to biological and social speaker traits and life outcomes, from reproductive to economic. Critically, researchers have used myriad speech stimuli to measure fo and infer its functional relevance, from individual vowels to longer bouts of spontaneous speech. Here, we acoustically analysed fo in nearly 1000 affectively neutral speech utterances (vowels, words, counting, greetings, read paragraphs and free spontaneous speech) produced by the same 154 men and women, aged 18-67, with two aims first, to test the methodological validity of comparing fo measures from diverse speech stimuli, and second, to test the prediction that the vast inter-individual differences in habitual fo found between same-sex adults are preserved across speech types. Indeed, despite differences in linguistic content, duration, scripted or spontan--eous production and within-individual variability, we show that 42-81% of inter-individual differences in fo can be explained between any two speech types. Beyond methodological implications, together with recent evidence that inter-individual differences in fo are remarkably stable across the lifespan and generalize to emotional speech and nonverbal vocalizations, our results further substantiate voice pitch as a robust and reliable biomarker in human communication.Although birds have traditionally been considered anosmic, increasing evidence indicates that olfaction plays an important role in the foraging behaviours of insectivorous birds. Recent studies have shown that birds can exploit herbivore-induced plant volatiles and sexual pheromones of adult insects to locate their prey. Many insectivorous birds prey on immature insects, providing relevant ecosystem services as pest regulators in natural and agricultural ecosystems. We asked whether birds could rely on chemical cues emitted by the immature stages of insects to prey on them. To address this question, we performed field experiments to evaluate if insectivorous birds can detect the aggregation pheromone produced by the larvae of the carpenter worm, Chilecomadia valdiviana. Groups of five artificial larvae were placed in branches of 72 adult trees in a remnant fragment of a sclerophyllous forest in central Chile. Each grouping of larvae contained a rubber septum loaded with either larval pheromone as treatment or solvent alone as control.
