The unique dietary fiber composition with high contents of β-glucan contributes to the health-promoting properties of oat and barley and may mediate a reduction of colon cancer risk. In the present study, chemopreventive effects of oat and barley (beta®barley) kernels were investigated. In order to address the impact of thermal processing on these effects, kernels were roasted (150-180 °C, approx. 20 min), digested and fermented using an In Vitro human digestion model. Concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and ammonia were determined in fermentation supernatants (FS). Growth inhibition, apoptosis, DNA integrity and gene expression of catalase were analyzed in LT97 colon adenoma cells. Concentrations of SCFA, particularly butyrate, were higher in oat/barley FS (2.2-fold, on average), while ammonia levels were significantly lower (0.7-fold, on average) than in the fermentation control. Treatment of LT97 cells with FS of oat/barley kernels led to a significant time- and dose-dependent growth reduction, a significant increase in caspase-3 activity and enhanced levels of catalase mRNA, without exhibiting genotoxic effects. In general, the results indicate a chemopreventive potential of In Vitro fermented oat and waxy winter barley mediated mainly by growth inhibitory and apoptotic effects, which are preserved after thermal processing.The distribution pattern and genetic structure of plant species have been profoundly influenced by climate oscillations. Phylogeographic analyses have been numerously conducted in biodiversity hotspot regions and some general conclusions have been documented. However, other regions have received less attentions and these places may serve as potential glacial refugia for plant species to survive the Quaternary glaciation. Here, we used six nuclear and three cpDNA markers to estimate the phylogeographic pattern of Populus davidiana, a widespread species distributed in southwest China. As a widely distributed species in southwest China, the nucleotide diversity of P. davidiana was relatively high (Na = 6.28, HO = 0.534, and HE = 0.658). Genetic differentiation (FST) between the two main distribution regions, Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, was 0.21221. According to the composition of chloroplast haplotypes and the result of structure in these populations, we clearly distinguished two distantly sublineages corresponding to two distribution regions. Results of the Mantel test showed that there was a significant correlation between genetic distance and geographical distance (R2 = 0.8252, p less then .05). The topographically heterogeneous regions and the low dispersal ability of seed and pollen may lead to high genetic differentiation between these two regions. A potential glacial refugia for P. davidiana located in adjacent regions to the Hengduan range was revealed and allopatric divergence in separated glacial refugia may directly lead to the present phylogeographic pattern of this species.The Indo-Swiss symposium on advances in pharmacogenomic strategies for implementation of personalized medicine was conducted as a part of the JIPMER Integrated Pharmacogenomics Program (JIPP), held in Puducherry, India on 23 November 2019. The aim of this study is to observe the change of early eGFR within 3 months after KT and to explore the correlation between eGFR and depression before and after transplantation. The Self-rating Depression Scale was used to evaluate depression. Among 135 patients with KT, 128 patients completed the longitudinal study. We used a one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance to analyze eGFR and a generalized estimating equation model to examine the relationship between depression and eGFR in KT recipients with pre-transplant and 30, 60, 90 days post-transplant. The mean eGFR of KT recipients at four time-points was 5.97 ± 4.83, 72.84 ± 26.06, 79.06 ± 26.45 and 81.79 ± 25.62, respectively. The results demonstrated that eGFR kept steady at 60 days and 90 days post-transplant; depression was significantly associated with eGFR. Earlier identification and treatment of depression in KT recipients may be essential to promote their recovery of early renal function.Background Lung cancer-related inflammation is associated with depression. Both elevated inflammation and depression are associated with worse survival. However, outcomes of patients with concomitant depression and elevated inflammation are not known. Materials & methods Patients with metastatic lung cancer (n = 123) were evaluated for depression and inflammation. Kaplan-Meier plots and Cox proportional hazard models provided survival estimations. Results Estimated survival was 515 days for the cohort and 323 days for patients with depression (hazard ratio 1.12; 95% CI 1.05-1.179), 356 days for patients with elevated inflammation (hazard ratio 2.85, 95% CI 1.856-4.388), and 307 days with both (χ2 = 12.546; p less then 0.001]). Conclusion Depression and inflammation are independently associated with inferior survival. Maryland forceps, which belongs to the category of grasper instruments, are often used in minimally invasive surgeries to hold, pull, push, manipulate, and perform dissection operations. During laparoscopic surgeries, often blood and other body fluids ooze from the site of surgery. Typically, suction-irrigation (SI) devices are used to periodically clear these fluids to get a better view of the site of surgery. To achieve this, the removal and insertion of multiple instruments are required. This process has to be repeated numerous times, which significantly increases the time needed for surgery. Literature survey and feedback from practicing surgeons suggest that this can be avoided by improving the current design of forceps. In this article, a modified design is proposed by combining the SI feature with the existing form of Maryland forceps. The modified design is first modeled in SolidWorks and then analyzed for fluid flow using ANSYS Fluent. Parametric analysis is performed to obtain the optimal design for the proposed multi-functional instrument, which can potentially improve the overall efficiency of the laparoscopic surgical process.This article presents the evaluation of anticholinesterase effects of aerial parts of Epilobium angustifolium, E. stevenii and E. hirsutum and isolated flavonoids from E. angustifolium, and quantification of the flavonoids by HPLC. Besides, the highest acetylcholinesterase inhibition was seen in the EtOAc sub-extracts of E. angustifolium and E. stevenii (36.51 ± 1.88 and 39.89 ± 3.09%, respectively), whereas EtOAc sub-extract of E. angustifolium had the best butyrylcholinesterase inhibition (62.09 ± 1.98%). Hyperoside showed strong inhibition activity on both enzymes. The active EtOAc sub-extract of E. angustifolium was quantitatively analyzed for their content of hyperoside (quercetin-3-O-β-D-galactoside) by HPLC. The content of hyperoside in EtOAc sub-extract of E. angustifolium was detected as 3.312%. The anatomical structures of the stem, leaf, sepal, petal, anther, and filament of E. angustifolium were investigated. The anatomical properties given in this study provide a description of E. angustifolium.Vestibular aqueduct is a precise structure embedded in the temporal bone and plays a key role in the physiological function of inner ear by maintaining the endolymphatic circulation and buffering the impact from intracranial pressure. Although the alterations on the morphology or volume of vestibular aqueduct result in variety of diseases, the approaches of evaluating the condition of vestibular aqueduct are still unsatisfing because the pathological sections utilized for the 3D construction model most likely undergoes morphological changes. In this study, the vestibular aqueduct images obtained by CT scanning were processed by finite element method to construct the 3D model. To assess if this numerical model reflects the actual biomechanical properties of vestibular aqueduct, the fluid-solid coupling calculation was applied to simulate the endolymphatic flow in the vestibular aqueduct. By measuring the dynamics of endolymphatic flow, and the pressure and displacement on round membrane under external pressure, we found the numerical 3D model recapitulated the biomechanical characteristics of the real vestibular aqueduct. In summary, our approach of 3D model construction for vestibular aqueduct will provide a powerful method for the research of vestibular aqueduct-related diseases.Aim To report on the management strategies in patients with cancer of unknown primary (CUP) in middle-income countries. Methods We conceived a survey of 20 items concerning the management of patients with CUP in daily clinical practice. Only participants from lower- and higher-middle-income countries, as per the World Bank Classification, were eligible for this study. Results The indications for the first-line treatment did not differ between the two economic regions, whereas those for second-line treatment were more prevalent in higher-middle-income countries. The use of targeted therapy based on immunohistochemistry alone was higher in lower-middle-income countries, although the access to CUP classifiers was similar between the two regions. Conclusions Proper recommendations must ensure that the economic burden is minimized and that other benefits outweigh the limited survival benefit achieved in patients with CUP.
