This retrospective case series investigated 167 patients reported from 73 hospitals within the Spanish Myeloma Collaborative Group network in March and April, 2020. Among MM and noncancer patients, median age was 71 years, and 57% of patients were male; 75 and 77% of patients, respectively, had at least one comorbidity. Here we reveal extensive phenotypic plasticity and niche complementarity in oleaginous microbial populations from a biological wastewater treatment plant. We perform meta-omics analyses (metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, metaproteomics and metabolomics) on in situ samples over 14 months at weekly intervals. Based on 1,364 de novo metagenome-assembled genomes, we uncover four distinct fundamental niche types. Throughout the time-series, we observe a major, transient shift in community structure, coinciding with substrate availability changes. Functional omics data reveals extensive variation in gene expression and substrate usage amongst community members. Ex situ bioreactor experiments confirm that responses occur within five hours of a pulse disturbance, demonstrating rapid adaptation by specific populations. Our results show that community resistance and resilience are a function of phenotypic plasticity and niche complementarity, and set the foundation for future ecological engineering efforts.We previously reported that in the adult animal extinction in pairs resulted in enhanced extinction, showing that social presence can reduce previously acquired fear responses. Based on our findings that juvenile and adult animals differ in the mechanisms of extinction, here we address whether the social presence of a conspecific affects extinction in juvenile animals similarly to adults. We further address whether such presence has a different impact on juvenile males and females. To that end, we examined in our established experimental setting whether conditioned male and female animals extinguish contextual fear memory better while in pairs. Taking advantage of the role of oxytocin (OT) in the mediation of extinction memory and social interaction, we also study the effect of antagonizing the OT receptors (OTR) either systemically or in the prefrontal cortex on social interaction-induced effects of fear extinction. The results show that social presence accelerates extinction in males and females as compared to the single condition. Yet, we show differential and opposing effects of an OTR antagonist in both sexes. Whereas in females, the systemic application of an OTR antagonist is associated with impaired extinction, it is associated with enhanced extinction in males. In contrast, prefrontal OT is not engaged in extinction in juvenile males, while is it is critical in females. Previously reported differences in the levels of prefrontal OT between males and females might explain the differences in OT action. These results suggest that even during the juvenile period, critical mechanisms are differently involved in the regulation of fear in males and females.BACKGROUND Despite the promising results of immunotherapy in cancer treatment, new response patterns, including pseudoprogression and hyperprogression, have been observed. Radiomics is the automated extraction of high-fidelity, high-dimensional imaging features from standard medical images, allowing comprehensive visualization and characterization of the tissue of interest and corresponding microenvironment. This study assessed whether radiomics can predict response to immunotherapy in patients with malignant tumors of the digestive system. MATERIAL AND METHODS Computed tomography (CT) images of patients with malignant tumors of the digestive system obtained at baseline and after immunotherapy were subjected to radiomics analyses. Radiomics features were extracted from each image. The formula of the screened features and the final predictive model were obtained using the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) algorithm. RESULTS Imaging analysis was feasible in 87 patients, including 3 with pseudoprogression and 7 with hyperprogression. One hundred ten radiomics features were obtained before and after treatment, including 109 features of the target lesions and 1 of the aorta. Four models were constructed, with the model constructed from baseline and post-treatment CT features having the best classification performance, with a sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of 83.3%, 88.9%, and 0.806, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Radiomics can predict the response of patients with malignant tumors of the digestive system to immunotherapy and can supplement conventional evaluations of response.BACKGROUND With infiltration, high-grade glioma easily causes the boundary between tumor tissue and adjacent tissue to become unclear and results in tumor recurrence at or near the resection margin according to the incomplete surgical resection. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) technique has been demonstrated to be a useful tool that yields a molecular fingerprint and provides rapid, nondestructive, high-throughput and clinically relevant diagnostic information. MATERIAL AND METHODS FTIR was used to investigate the morphological and biochemical properties of human astrocytes (HA), microglia (HM1900), glioma cells (U87), and glioblastoma cells (BT325) cultured in vitro to simulate the infiltration area, with the use of multi-peak fitting and principal component analysis (PCA) of amide I of FTIR spectra and the use of hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). RESULTS We found that the secondary structures of the 4 types of cells were significantly different. The contents of a-helix structure in glial cells was significantly higher than in the glioma cells, but the levels of ß-sheet, ß-turn, and random coil structures were lower.
