We previously identified BQ323636.1 (BQ), a novel splice variant of NCOR2, can robustly predict tamoxifen resistance in ER+ primary breast cancer. Here we show that BQ can enhance IL-6/STAT3 signalling. We demonstrated that through interfering with NCOR2 suppressive activity, BQ favours the binding of ER to IL-6 promoter and the binding of NF-ĸB to IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) promoter, leading to the up-regulation of both IL-6 and IL-6R and thus the activation of STAT3. Knockdown of IL-6R could compromise tamoxifen resistance mediated by BQ. Furthermore, Tocilizumab (TCZ), an antibody that binds to IL-6R, could effectively reverse tamoxifen resistance both in vitro and in vivo. We studied acclimation responses to desiccation in adults of two endemic water beetles from distant lineages living in Mediterranean intermittent saline streams Enochrus jesusarribasi (Hydrophilidae) and Nebrioporus baeticus (Dytiscidae). Cuticular water loss and CHC composition were measured in specimens exposed to a prior non-lethal desiccation stress, allowed to recover and exposed to a subsequent desiccation treatment. E. jesusarribasi showed a beneficial acclimation response to desiccation pre-desiccated individuals reduced cuticular water loss rate in a subsequent exposure by increasing the relative abundance of cuticular methyl-branched compounds, longer chain alkanes and branched alkanes. In contrast, N. baeticus lacked acclimation capacity for controlling water loss and therefore may have a lower physiological capacity to cope with increasing aridity. Early in pregnancy the placenta harbors hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) and is an extramedullary source of erythropoiesis. However, globin expression is not unique to erythroid cells and can be triggered by hypoxia. To investigate the role of the placenta in increasing globin levels previously reported in PE, flow cytometry, histological and immunostaining and in situ analyses were used on placenta samples and ex vivo explant cultures. Our results indicated that in PE pregnancies, placental HSPC homing and erythropoiesis were not affected. Non-erythroid alpha-globin mRNA and protein, but not gamma-globin, were detected in syncytiotrophoblasts and stroma of PE placenta samples. Similarly, alpha-globin protein and mRNA were upregulated in normal placenta explants cultured in hypoxia. The upregulation was independent of HIF1 and NRF2, the two main candidates of globin transcription in non-erythroid cells. Our study is the first to demonstrate alpha-globin mRNA expression in syncytiotrophoblasts in PE, induced by hypoxia. However, gamma-globin was only expressed in erythrocytes. We conclude that alpha-globin, but not HbF, is expressed in placental syncytiotrophoblasts in PE and may contribute to the pathology of the disease.We explored the role of socioeconomic inequalities in COVID-19 incidence among cancer patients during the first wave of the pandemic. We conducted a case-control study within the UK Biobank cohort linked to the COVID-19 tests results available from 16 March 2020 until 23 August 2020. The main exposure variable was socioeconomic status, assessed using the Townsend Deprivation Index. Among 18,917 participants with an incident malignancy in the UK Biobank cohort, 89 tested positive for COVID-19. The overall COVID-19 incidence was 4.7 cases per 1000 incident cancer patients (95%CI 3.8-5.8). Compared with the least deprived cancer patients, those living in the most deprived areas had an almost three times higher risk of testing positive (RR 2.6, 95%CI 1.1-5.8). Other independent risk factors were ethnic minority background, obesity, unemployment, smoking, and being diagnosed with a haematological cancer for less than five years. The physicochemical properties, morphology, biodegradation, and swelling properties of hydrogels were investigated. The composite hydrogels demonstrated enriched drug release under the acidic conditions (pH 4.5 = 99%, and pH 6.0 = 82%) over 18 days. Owing to the f-CNOs inclusion, GelMA/f-CNOs/CD supramolecular hydrogels presented augmented tensile strength (σult = 356.1 ± 3.4 MPa), toughness (K = 51.5 ± 0.24 Jg-1), and Young's modulus (E = 41.8 ± 1.4 GPa). The effectiveness is investigated using coils fabricated with Litz wires. Three-turn rectangular assistant coils 22.4 × 45.3 mm2 in size were stacked on a five-turn circular primary coil with a diameter of 45.3 mm in a 2 × 1 array. Transfer efficiency between two such coils was measured by producing lateral misalignment, while maintaining the vertical distance between the Tx and Rx coils at 7 mm. The experimental results showed that the transfer efficiency was compensated by approximately 46.1%P maximum in a misalignment state of 30 mm, which corresponded to 67% of the maximum size of the coil, compared to the transfer efficiency of the structure, in which the multilayer coil was not applied. The NN method utilizes only the measured distance and the tag orientation, and implements an NN model obtained by machine learning, using measurements at different distances and orientations of the two UWB modules. link3 The verification of the experimental setup with 12 anchors and a tag shows that with the proposed NN method, 5 cm better root mean square error values (RMSEs) are obtained for the measured distance between the anchors and the tag compared to the calibration method that did not include orientation information.
