Physical activity prevents cancer and improves cancer outcomes. Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) signaling plays a significant role in cancer development and progression. However, there are heterogeneous results regarding physical activity and its effect on the IGF system. This study meta-analyzed the results of randomized clinical trials which evaluated the effects of physical exercise on the changes of physiologic markers to identify the role of physical exercise in modulating the IGF system in women with breast cancer.

PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL, and SPORTDiscus were systematically searched until October 2020. Eligibility criteria included randomized controlled trials that evaluated the effects of physical exercise on the insulin-like growth factor system among women with breast cancer.

Twelve randomized controlled studies involving 736 participants were analyzed. Physical exercise significantly reduced levels of serum insulin (MD -1.24μIU/mL, 95% CI -2.12 to -0.36, p=0.006), IGF-II (MD -54.21ng/mL, 95% CI -61.41 to -47.00, p<0.00001), IGFBP-1 (MD -2.90ng/mL, 95% CI -3.91 to -1.90, p<0.00001), and HOMA score (MD -0.47, 95% CI -0.87 to -0.06, p=0.02). In addition, serum glucose (MD -0.71mg/dL, 95% CI -2.57 to 1.15; p=0.45) and IGF-I levels (MD -5.23ng/mL, 95% CI -13.00 to 2.53; p=0.19) were decreased after physical exercise although they did not show a statistical significance.

Though conventional methods of treatment are available, multidrug resistance and side effects are predominant. Physicians and scientists are working side by side to develop an effective medicament, which is safe and cost-effective. However, most failures are obtained when focused on the clinical perspective. This review mainly brings out the correlation between the curcumin and its use for the mitigation of colorectal cancer, the use of curcumin as a chemotherapeutic agent, chemosensitizer, and in a combination and synergistic approach. The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics properties of curcumin and its formulation approach helps in giving an idea to develop new approaches for the treatment of colorectal cancer using curcumin. The bio-based platform chemicals 2,3-butanediol (BDO) and acetoin have various applications in chemical, cosmetics, food, agriculture, and pharmaceutical industries, whereas the derivatives of BDO could be used as fuel additives, polymer and synthetic rubber production. This review summarizes the novel technological developments in adapting genetic and metabolic engineering strategies for selection and construction of chassis strains for BDO and acetoin production. The valorization of renewable feedstocks and bioprocess development for the upstream and downstream stages of bio-based BDO and acetoin production are discussed. The techno-economic aspects evaluating the viability and industrial potential of bio-based BDO production are presented. The commercialization of bio-based BDO and acetoin production requires the utilization of crude renewable resources, the chassis strains with high fermentation production efficiencies and development of sustainable purification or conversion technologies.

Complex aortic aneurysms (juxtarenal j-AAA, pararenal p-AAAs, thoracoabdominal TAAAs) are treated with increasing frequency through fenestrated and branched endovascular repair (F/B-EVAR), however the outcome of these procedures is usually reported separately by single experiences and wider overviews are not frequent. The aim of this study was therefore to report an Italian experience analyzing the results obtained in 4 academic centers in order to evaluate predictors of outcome.

Between 2008 and 2019, all consecutive patients undergoing F/B-EVAR in 4 Italian university centers were prospectively recorded and retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative comorbidities and postoperative complications were classified according with the SVS-reporting standard. Postoperative complications and 30-day / in-hospital mortality were assessed as early outcomes. Survival, freedom from reinterventions (FFRs) and target visceral vessels (TVVs) patency were assessed as follow-up outcomes by Kaplan-Meier analysis. Risk factorsmortality during follow up.

F/B-EVAR is associated with satisfactory mid-term outcomes in a nationwide experience. A variety of risk factors should be considered in FB-EVAR indication and post-operative patients management in order to reduce the risk of postoperative complications and improve mid-term outcome.

Dietary lapses (i.e., deviations from the BWL diet) occur frequently and can adversely affect weight loss outcomes. Research indicates that lapse behavior is heterogenous; there are many eating behaviors that could constitute a dietary lapse, but they are rarely studied as distinct contributors to weight outcomes. This secondary analysis aims to evaluate six behavioral lapse types during a 10-week mobile BWL program (eating a large portion, eating when not intended, eating an off-plan food, planned lapse, being unaware of caloric content, and endorsing multiple types of lapse). Associations between weekly behavioral lapse type frequency and weekly weight loss were investigated, and predictive contextual characteristics (psychological, behavioral, and environmental triggers for lapse) and individual difference (e.g., age, gender) factors were examined across lapse types. Participants (N = 121) with overweight/obesity (MBMI = 34.51; 84.3% female; 69.4% White) used a mobile BWL program for 10 weeks, self-weighed weekly using Bluetooth scales, completed daily ecological momentary assessment of lapse behavior and contextual characteristics, and completed a baseline demographics questionnaire. Linear mixed models revealed significant negative associations between unplanned lapses and percent weight loss. Unplanned lapses from eating a large portion, eating when not intended, and having multiple "types" were significantly negatively associated with weekly percent weight loss. A lasso regression showed that behavioral lapse types share many similar stable factors, with other factors being unique to specific lapse types. Results add to the prior literature on lapses and weight loss in BWL and provide preliminary evidence that behavioral lapse types could aid in understanding adherence behavior and developing precision medicine tools to improve dietary adherence.Sub-optimal diets are one of the most important risk factors contributing to the global burden of disease. Developing a better understanding of the drivers of food choice, including the role of individual preferences, is important to address this issue. The objective of this mixed methods research was to identify the relative importance of preferences for different food quality attributes (e.g. nutrition, food safety, price and convenience) that might influence shopping habits and food choice in the context of a rapidly changing peri-urban food environment in Hanoi Province, Viet Nam. A total of 264 women were randomly selected and interviewed using Best-Worst Scaling to elicit preferences among food quality attributes for different food groups (leafy green vegetables, fruits, instant foods, snack foods). A subset of these respondents (n = 40) participated in focus group discussions in order to explore their preferences and food values in more detail. The food quality attributes considered to be most important varied by food group with nutrition and food safety (both immediate and future health) ranking highest for leafy green vegetables and fruits, convenience for instant foods, and taste for snack foods. Price was considered least important across all food groups. Focus group discussions reinforced these results with additional insights particularly regarding trade-offs between nutrition, food safety, convenience, and price. This research demonstrates the feasibility of identifying important drivers of consumption in a South East Asian context using Best-Worst Scaling. These results could help inform the design of behavior change interventions and guide food system policies that seek to shift consumer choices towards healthier diets. The problem of suboptimal treatment adherence among patients with dermatologic or other diseases has not been adequately addressed in health care. Despite a wide range of efficacious therapies, nonadherence remains a primary driver of suboptimal clinical outcomes. Novel solutions to address this unmet need can be found in behavioral economics. By leveraging our understanding of human decision-making, we may better promote treatment adherence, thereby improving quality of life and decreasing economic burdens. Behavioral economics has been studied extensively in relation to topics such as health policy and health behaviors; however, there is a dearth of research applying this approach to chronic diseases and only a handful within dermatology. We conducted a scoping review in PubMed to identify articles that discuss behavioral economics and its application to treatment adherence in dermatologic patients, with a particular focus on psoriasis, followed by a summary of key ethical considerations. We found that such principles can be employed in cost-effective, scalable interventions that improve patient adherence to a range of medical therapies and lifestyle modifications.Prostate cancer (PCa) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in men. Available therapies yield limited outcome. We explored anti-PCa activity in a polyphenol-rich fraction of Bergenia ligulata (PFBL), a plant used in Indian traditional and folk medicine for its anti-inflammatory and antineoplastic properties. PFBL constituted of about fifteen different compounds as per LCMS analysis induced apoptotic death in both androgen-dependent LNCaP and androgen-refractory PC3 and DU145 cells with little effect on NKE and WI38 cells. Further investigation revealed that PFBL mediates its function through upregulating ROS production by enhanced catalytic activity of Monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A). Notably, the differential inactivation of NRF2-antioxidant response pathway by PFBL resulted in death in PC3 versus NKE cells involving GSK-3β activity facilitated by AKT inhibition. PFBL efficiently reduced the PC3-tumor xenograft in NOD-SCID mice alone and in synergy with Paclitaxel. Tumor tissues in PFBL-treated mice showed upregulation of similar mechanism of cell death as observed in isolated PC3 cells i.e., elevation of MAO-A catalytic activity, ROS production accompanied by activation of β-TrCP-GSK-3β axis of NRF2 degradation. Blood counts, liver, and splenocyte sensitivity analyses justified the PFBL safety in the healthy mice. To our knowledge this is the first report of an activity that crippled NRF2 activation both in vitro and in vivo in response to MAO-A activation. Results of this study suggest the development of a novel treatment protocol utilizing PFBL to improve therapeutic outcome for patients with aggressive PCa which claims hundreds of thousands of lives each year.
