This is particularly concerning when examining notions of mental ill-health, where a lack of cultural awareness, understanding, and sensitivity can impede adequate treatment. As a global religion, Islam is practiced within various cultural milieus, and, given the centrality of faith amongst Muslim communities, a conflation of religion and culture can occur when attempting to understand mental health paradigms. Whilst much of the discourse regarding Muslim mental health centres on cultural formulations, this article discusses how, historically, conceptualisations relating to medicine and mental health were ensconced within the particular medical paradigm of the day. Specifically, it considers the frameworks within which mental health and illness were understood within the medieval Muslim medical tradition and their relevance to contemporary debates in psychology and psychiatry. In sum, this paper seeks to demonstrate that cultural formulations of mental illness, often viewed as "Islamic", are distinct from historical Islamic approaches to mental health which employed contemporaneous medical discourse and which act as the reference marker for the emergent revivalist Islamic psychology movement seen today.Locomotive engineers need to detect auditory warning signals for safe and effective job performance. link2 We measured the levels and spectra of the warning signals and noises present in Dutch train cabins to evaluate the effectiveness of these signals. Audio-recordings were made in six train types during normal operation. Signal detectability was estimated using the Detectsound software and compared against ISO 7731. Signal detectability was also measured in six normally-hearing individuals in a laboratory setting. Signal levels ranged between 68 and 84 dBA. Noise levels ranged between 53 and 77 dBA. The acoustical requirements for signal detectability were not met in multiple driving conditions, especially at higher speed. Sufficient signal-to-noise ratio's were achieved in the laboratory measurements, but difficulties can be expected in unfavourable driving situations or when the engineer suffers from hearing loss. Acoustical, environmental, or work modifications might be required to prevent situations with insufficient audibility in hearing-impaired engineers. Under laboratory conditions, normally-hearing individuals could compensate for the suboptimal acoustic circumstances, but acoustical, environmental, or work modifications might be required to prevent situations with insufficient audibility in hearing-impaired engineers.Background To understand the intrinsic cardiac developmental and functional abnormalities in pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum (PAIVS) free from effects secondary to anatomic defects, we performed and compared single-cell transcriptomic and phenotypic analyses of patient- and healthy subject-derived human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) and engineered tissue models. Methods and Results We derived hiPSC lines from 3 patients with PAIVS and 3 healthy subjects and differentiated them into hiPSC-CMs, which were then bioengineered into the human cardiac anisotropic sheet and human cardiac tissue strip custom-designed for electrophysiological and contractile assessments, respectively. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) of hiPSC-CMs, human cardiac anisotropic sheet, and human cardiac tissue strip was performed to examine the transcriptomic basis for any phenotypic abnormalities using pseudotime and differential expression analyses. Through pseudotime analysis, we demonstrated that bioengineered tissue constructs provide pro-maturational cues to hiPSC-CMs, although the maturation and development were attenuated in PAIVS hiPSC-CMs. Furthermore, reduced contractility and prolonged contractile kinetics were observed with PAIVS human cardiac tissue strips. Consistently, single-cell RNA sequencing of PAIVS human cardiac tissue strips and hiPSC-CMs exhibited diminished expression of cardiac contractile apparatus genes. By contrast, electrophysiological aberrancies were absent in PAIVS human cardiac anisotropic sheets. Conclusions Our findings were the first to reveal intrinsic abnormalities of cardiomyocyte development and function in PAIVS free from secondary effects. We conclude that hiPSC-derived engineered tissues offer a unique method for studying primary cardiac abnormalities and uncovering pathogenic mechanisms that underlie sporadic congenital heart diseases.The current study (a) ascertained whether there is a relationship between sexual victimization (SV) and disordered eating (DE) among bisexual women, (b) assessed whether objectification theory explains the relationship, and (c) tested for group differences between bisexual and heterosexual women on SV, DE, and other objectification theory variables. Utilizing a sample of 164 undergraduate bisexual women, there was a significant positive relationship between SV and DE that was serially mediated by self-surveillance and body shame. In addition, bisexual participants endorsed more SV, DE, body shame, and interoceptive deficits than a comparison sample of 335 undergraduate heterosexual women. link3 Implications are discussed.

Parents with intellectual disabilities (ID) are overrepresented in the child welfare system. Valid instruments are needed to assess parenting skills in this population. This research evaluates the psychometric properties of the Skills Assessment for Parents with Intellectual Disability (SAPID), an observational instrument completed to assess parents with ID with child welfare involvement.

All clients enrolled in a prevention program for parents with ID were included in the sample (N=133). Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to understand the validity of the SAPID. Predictive validity was assessed by examining change over time with two outcomes out-of-home placement and program completion.

The validated SAPID consisted of three latent constructs daily life skills, parent-child interaction, and overall safety. Parenting skills across all domains significantly improved for families remaining intact and those completing the program.

The validated SAPID should be considered for use in assessing parenting skills for those with ID.The after-visit summary (AVS), a document generated from the electronic health record that summarizes patients' encounters with the healthcare system, is a widely used communication tool. Its use by and usefulness for populations with limited English proficiency (LEP) and limited health literacy (LHL) is poorly understood. In this cross-sectional study, we assessed use and usefulness of the AVS among English-, Spanish-, Cantonese-, or Mandarin-speaking Latinx and Chinese primary-care patients. Outcome measures were self-reported AVS use (did not use/looked-at only/shared only/looked-at and shared) and usefulness (useful/not useful). Among 993 participants, 57% were ≥65 years old, 61% had LEP, 21% had LHL, 30.2% were Latinx, 69.8% were Chinese. The majority used the AVS (86%) and found it useful (65%). In adjusted models, participants with LEP were more likely to "look at" (OR 1.68, 95% CI 1.07-2.62) and "look at and share" (OR 1.65, 1.02-2.66) the AVS, but less likely to find it useful (OR 0.68, 0.47-0.98) compared to English speakers. Those with LHL were less likely to "look at" (OR 0.60, 0.39-0.93) and less likely to find the AVS useful (OR 0.67, 0.46-0.99) compared to those with adequate health literacy. Our results emphasize the need for easy-to-understand and fully language-concordant AVS.

The long-term effects of pediatric concussion on brain morphometry remain poorly delineated. This study used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate cortical volume and thickness in youth several years after concussion.

Participants aged 8-19 years old with a history of concussion (n = 37) or orthopedic injury (n = 20) underwent MRI, rated their postconcussion symptoms, and completed cognitive testing on average 2.6 years (SD = 1.6) after injury. FreeSurfer was used to obtain cortical volume and thickness measurements as well as determine any significant correlations between brain morphometry, postconcussion symptoms (parent and self-report), and cognitive functioning.

No significant group differences were found for either cortical volume or thickness. Youth with a history of concussion had higher postconcussion symptom scores (both parent and self-report Postconcussion Symptom Inventory) than the orthopedic injury group, but symptom ratings did not significantly correlate with cortical volume or thickness.
