The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as a market that would grow for bidet and washlet toilet seats, in contrast to its "base" markets in Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure the next generation could read them. However, many words were being replaced by foreign words, such as dui, which is Bengali for verandah.
Origins
Incorporated in 1917, Toto's early years were a mirror of Japan's economic development. In the first half of its existence, the company manufactured goods to meet demand for new, modern urban housing. To accomplish this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding internationally in the late 1980s in order to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other products from other manufacturers to enhance its own range of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and expanded the firm's global market share.
In the 90s, Toto began focusing on research and development for water-related appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better serve the needs of customers and boost profits. The company employed the same approach of just-in-time in its supply chain management as well as sales program. This led to a higher degree of customer satisfaction.
Toto continued to innovate toilet technology. Its most recent toilet, for example is equipped with a powerful tornado flush that is more ecologically friendly than traditional toilets. The company also uses recycled water in its production process and has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets, Toto manufactures bathtubs and faucets, as well as hand dryers that are more energy efficient than conventional models.
The first Toto museum opened in 2015. It features exhibits on Toto's most famous products, their evolution, the group companies (all of which are made of ceramics) and the history of plumbing, and other products like bath units. In an additional gallery, you can see Toto products that are sold throughout. The museum houses a bathroom with a washbasin and other toilet innovations.
Before beginning the formation of Toto members of the group did sessions for a variety of musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also appeared on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock with tracks like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into your mind. However, the album also includes some more mellow, jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloying than on previous efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album a few months later, and went on a world tour to promote the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old tapes and demos for an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a double album called Then and Now. It was the band's first album without the single track "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which restricted his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes and the other original members of Asia - Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of formally reforming the group. The lineup, with the exception of Howe who was occupied with Yes at the period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
