Top networks identified in OME were organismal injury and abnormalities, cell morphology, and auditory disease. Top Ingenuity canonical pathways identified were axonal guidance signaling, which contains genes associated with auditory development and disease and nicotine degradation II and III pathways. Associated upstream regulators included β-estradiol, dexamethasone, and G-protein-coupled estrogen receptor-1 (GPER1), which are associated with otoprotection or inflammation during insult.

RNA-Seq demonstrates differential gene expression in MEE from patients with OME compared to healthy controls with important implications for infection susceptibility, hearing loss, and a role for tobacco exposure in the development and/or severity of OME in pediatric patients.

This analytic approach allowed for tests of differences between groups, differences within groups over time, and interactions between groups and time on indicators of sociopolitical development including civic behaviors, psychological sense of community, and the emotional and cognitive components of psychological empowerment. Results showed that community organizing, as a particular type of mediating institution, cultivates sociopolitical development by elevating psychological empowerment and civic engagement over time.We propose an efficient and accurate non-iterative method, dubbed uESE, for calculating solvation free energies. ICG-001 concentration Apart from a COSMO-like electrostatic term, the model takes into account non-electrostatic contributions, which depend on atomic surfaces, induced surface charge densities, and the molecular volume. uESE is tested on 35 polar and 57 non-polar solvents. The calculated and experimental solvation free energies are compared for 2892 systems. The method exhibits an excellent performance, which is superior to major solvation methods. The mean absolute error of predicted solvation energies is found below 1 kcal/mol for neutral solutes and below 3 kcal/mol for ions. The calculated data are almost independent of the quantum-chemical method or/and basis sets employed. As the journal transitions from fourth to fifth decade, its fourth and fifth Chief Editor discuss its role in the research process.Predominantly Spanish-speaking Latinx individuals are underrepresented in research, and one primary barrier is the lack of infrastructure to effectively engage, among them, adequate cultural and linguistic adaptation of research measures. Capitalizing on existing recommendations for appropriate and ethical engagement of Latinx individuals in research, we present a comprehensive approach to cultural and linguistic adaptation, and describe the application of this approach in the context of an ongoing longitudinal, observational, community-engaged study that follows a cohort of young adult Latinx immigrants (ages 18-44) in the Southeastern region of the United States who were predominantly Spanish-speakers (N = 391). We describe barriers that researchers may face in their pursuit of cultural and linguistic adaptation and offset these challenges with tangible solutions. We discuss lessons learned through our application to a research study. This approach holds promise for reducing barriers to participation in research and health disparities in predominantly Spanish-speaking Latinx individuals, who represent a population that is growing in size in the United States yet is still underrepresented as research participants and in the research workforce.

Expression of the tight junction proteins Cldn1 and 4 is altered in skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, and Cldn1 deficiency affects skin barrier formation. Impedance spectroscopy (IS) has been proven to allow detection of alterations in the skin barrier but is currently unable to separate effects on viable epidermis (VE) and stratum corneum (SC).

Effects of siRNA-mediated Cldn1 and 4 knockdown in reconstructed human epidermis (RHE) on VE and SC barrier function were investigated with Ussing chamber-based IS. Barrier components were sequentially altered, employing iron oxide nanoparticles and EGTA, to identify their contribution to the impedance spectrum. Resistance changes due to apically applied hyperosmolar electrolyte were used to identify barrier defects non-invasively.

IS of RHE yielded two relaxation frequencies, representing the barrier properties of the SC (~1000Hz) and VE (~100Hz). As proof of concept, it was shown that the Cldn1 knockdown-induced resistance drop arises from the impairmenment.Androdioecy (the coexistence of males and hermaphrodites) is a rare mating system for which the evolutionary dynamics are poorly understood. Here, we investigate the cottony cushion scale, Icerya purchasi, one of only three reported cases of androdioecy in insects. In this species, female-like hermaphrodites have been shown to produce sperm and self-fertilize. However, males are ocassionally observed as well. In a large genetic analysis, we show for the first time that, although self-fertilization appears to be the primary mode of reproduction, rare outbreeding events do occur in natural populations, supporting the hypothesis that hermaphrodites mate with males and hence androdioecy is the mating system of I. purchasi. Thus, this globally invasive pest insect appears to enjoy the colonization advantages of a selfing organism while also benefitting from periodic reintroduction of genetic variation through outbreeding with males. The mechanism of 6-π electrocyclization of all-cis, mono-trans, and double-trans [10]annulene to yield 4a,8a-dihydronaphthalene has been explored at various quantum-chemical methods. The mono-trans configuration cyclizes preferentially to trans-4a,8a-dihydronaphthalene, in agreement with the experimental results. The cyclization of the all-cis configuration requires firstly a bond-shifting to the naphthalene-like conformation of double-trans [10]annulene, which is the rate-limiting step, and finally its azulene-like conformation electrocyclizes quickly to cis-4a,8a-dihydronaphthalene. Its experimental rate coefficient is consistent with the computed one for the cyclization of the all-cis configuration, unlike the calculated one for the double-trans configuration. These results confirm the configurations assigned by Masamune et al. to the two isomers which they isolated.
