Interfacial rheology provides insight into the mechanical properties of adsorption layers on liquid-liquid interfaces, which mediates the stability of emulsion droplets. The use of capsule compression at the scale of an emulsion droplet to probe the interfacial rheology may open up the possibility of testing the interfacial rheological properties of droplets with complex histories and extremely small volumes found in many applications.
The time dependent interfacial rheological behavior of β-lactoglobulin adsorption layers on an oil/water interface in the native and crosslinked state was extracted using small oscillatory indentation with atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results of this novel model and experimental approach were compared to the well-established techniques of interfacial shear rheology (ISR) and dilational pendant drop tensiometry that were performed on analogous interfaces.
The tan δ measured between the ISR and AFM measurements provide similar results in an overlapping frequency range, but the viscoelastic moduli G' and G differ by several orders of magnitude. This is most likely the result of the different flow fields and the low deformation of the AFM measurements compared to dilational and shear flow fields.

A better understanding of these roles is important for furthering the clinical understanding of heart failure. We previously reported that Trpc3-knockout (KO) mice are resistant to pathologic hypertrophy and that their CaV1.2 protein expression is reduced. In this study, we aimed to examine the relationship between these two proteins and characterize their role in neonatal cardiomyocytes. We measured CaV1.2 expression in the hearts of wild-type (WT) and Trpc3-/- mice, and examined the effects of Trpc3 knockdown and overexpression in the rat cell line H9c2. We also compared the hypertrophic responses of neonatal cardiomyocytes cultured from Trpc3-/- mice to a representative hypertrophy-causing drug, isoproterenol (ISO), and measured the activity of nuclear factor of activated T cells 3 (NFAT3) in neonatal cardiomyocytescrease in size of Trpc3-KO myocytes was greatly reduced. We report witnesses' perceptions of what has shaped UK policies and how these policies have been received by healthcare workers. Such studies are usually affected by hindsight. Here we deploy a novel prospective approach to capture real-time information. We are historians, social scientists and biomedical researchers who study how societies cope with infectious disease. In February 2020 we began regular semi-structured calls with prominent members of policy communities, and health care professionals, to elicit their roles in, and reactions to, the pandemic response. We report witnesses' perceptions that personal protective equipment (PPE) stocks were too small, early warnings have not led to sufficiently rapid policy decisions, and a lack of transparency is sapping public trust. Significant successes include research mobilisation. The early experiences and reactions of our witnesses suggest important issues for investigation, notably a perception of delay in decision making.Indigenous communities increasingly assert their right to self-determination by requiring that participatory research approaches be used, valuing and prioritizing Indigenous knowledges, for the purpose of improving Indigenous health. While frameworks that focus on Indigenous knowledges are being developed, these must be adapted or developed by Indigenous communities because their knowledge is specific to place and inherent to their lived experience. No community-based participatory research (CBPR) framework for health research has been developed with the Labrador Innu. In addition, while the literature emphasizes the importance of relationship in research with Indigenous communities, the process of establishing relationships is underspecified. Within this context, we describe our experience in developing a CBPR framework for health research in a study that is community-initiated and fitting within Innu self-determination. We highlight the importance of paying attention to the theoretical roots of CBPR, arguinelational approaches to research with Indigenous communities, and for Indigenous leaders and researchers who seek community solutions through research.
Receiving a healthcare provider's recommendation is a well-documented predictor of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, and yet recommendations remain understudied and undertheorized.
To qualitatively describe strategies providers use to motivate HPV vaccination.
We surveyed a national sample of 771 U.S. primary care physicians. Data came from an open-ended item that assessed physicians' perspectives on the most effective thing they could say to persuade parents to get HPV vaccine for their 11- to 12-year-old children. Using a standardized codebook and two independent coders, we conducted a thematic analysis to identify rhetorical strategies underlying physicians' responses.
We identified two sets of strategies for motivating HPV vaccination. One set drew parents' attention to specific actors or vaccine characteristics.
